If it is the one I am thinking of there are a few choke points. Keep them locked down and move out with Phoenix until you get Titans rolling. Grab the resources and mines on your side of the mountains ASAP. You are very ore/wood starved if you try to tech up all 3 cities, so ignore the human city aside from a statue for gold.

The pastebin has a mega link that contains Might and Magic 1-8 and Heroes 1-4, so you could try them out.
You can also go to TPB and download the GOG version of it:
That being said, GOG is selling the game for $4 (or whatever is your regional equivalent), which isn't really all that much even if you're poor, so if you don't want to hassle with torrents or mega links, just buy it there.

Whatever you choose to do, DO NOT get the Heroes III HD version - it's just a shitty reskin and lacks both expansions and a random map generator. Just install the unofficial HD patch and you're good to go!

I've already said farewell to HoMM after Ubishit turned it into a gacha game, so it can only pleasantly surprise me. The number of factions is limited but I'm sure they'll be able to add more if the game turns out to be successful. Also, I understand this was a stylistic choice but it's a bit too pixelated for my tastes. Sill, I'm cautiously optimistic about it.

Don't get me wrong, V did a lot of things well (story definitely not being one of those things) but it simply isn't as replayable as HoMM III (few things are). And in the end, if you're able to play something for 20 years and not get bored, that means it's fun.

3 is more refined of a game, especially aesthetically speaking and it makes me feel nostalgic and longing for the past because of sprites and hero portraits and the way the music sounds and how it performs. I'm just not such a huge fan of shitty WoW-esque graphics either and I think that the Inferno faction looked inauthentic concept-wise. that tower was too human-like in terms of architecture and that gate and those walls you could build around it looked mismatched compared to what's behind. academy faction was very well done however. the most awkward decision was to implement in-between turns music for every faction. it's so annoying especially while playing Inferno because it's such intense music. Because with that design choice it makes you wonder if you're gonna fully listen and appreciate every terrain soundtrack there is like you could in Heroes 3. In H4 it doesn't matter so much because the turns go by really fast but it's terrible in 5 with all the loading times.

I think Heroes 6 looks so much nicer than 5. same with 7. 6 performs horribly though and gate rushing pisses me off. I guess that shit annoys me less in 3 but I don't know why.

I have HoMM3 GOG version with ERA 2 and HD Mod on top of it (installed in that order). Phoenixes should not have been made of fire (no sources give it a fiery appearance), and should not be immune to fire and should not be the fastest unit in the game. Rebirth is fine.

Arch devils with its teleport should have been the fastest unit in the game and should be immune to fire (dudes are literally teleporting through fire) and fits thematically much better with Inferno/armageddon and give inferno a much needed boost.

There are better ways to do that than boosting a unit that is already a superfast non-retal nuker that allows you to take Utopias with trivial losses or hordes of walkers with zero losses, and there are not enough good reasons to boost a faction that has a fairly strong building curve and the demon farming strategy.

Tower is a worse town than Inferno in most metagames anyway, including SoD.

>> No.5662787

>>5661163
>Tower is a worse town than Inferno
why?
slower movement?
expensive?

>> No.5662873

>>5662787
both Tower and Inferno suffer from having bad hero classes and bad biome to start on meaning worse map features, but Tower also has a whopping top speed of 13, is expensive as all hell, and even though you want Master Grems in the first week it delays your overall build by a lot. When Tower is pretty much a port of a HoMM2 city with a few units changed around but everything costs the same, but you gate the best Wizard feature (powerful shooters right off the bat) behind an upgrade the build order becomes stressful to plan out and execute on week 1.

Nagas and Efreeti are somewhat comparable in terms of a creeping power boost, but Efreeti are much faster and less reliant on an upgrade to move. Titans take forever to get to; stockpiling them can get you an impressive army or it can sit in your town while the map is decided without them and Giants are fairly fragile for what they are, and losing one means losing a future Titan; in contrast, Devils are hard to kill with the right micro.

Also, Inferno has demon farming; it has endless potential, but is hard to pull off.

It also has quite a bit to do with the popularity of templates that separate players with strong guards; on more open templates Tower is more liable to snowball a tiny bit by taking someone out early.

The only reason Inferno gets a bad rap while Tower usually doesn't is because Inferno's pound for pound full army strength is lackluster and the early game with Imps is tenuous, but playing fantasy football in a vacuum while waiting for your Capitol isn't how the game actually plays.

If you engage any enemy hero (wandering stacks don't work) in combat and surrender, you can buy them out in any town with their army at the time of the surrender fully intact. The cost of the surrender scales with the size of your army, so I seem to recall that I paid like 15000 gold and then another 2500g for the rebuy, but it was worth it to quickly traverse my whole army to the other side of the map.

Roland is technically an ally, but in HoMM2 that distinction is only coded as "both players get the same victory screen when their victory conditions are met", so it's possible to attack your ally.

For that matter why did they make so many trash heroes? You can generally count the number of actually playable heroes in each faction on one hand.

>> No.5668089

>For that matter why did they make so many trash heroes?
Because with the design model of "HoMM2, but new and improved" HoMM3 was generally working off the assumption that it's the primary hero class that will be the most important distinction, not the secondary, and that a roleplaying flavor matters.

It mostly shows on characters like Barbarians. No matter what Barbarian you find in tavern (if you play a faction with shit hero classes), they're likely decent enough even if you're wasting a single secondary skill or a hero specialty.
