GZDoom with all the setting cranked up to max and all the optional effects enabled doesn't even look like DOOM anymore.

Tough question. The way World Tour sold was a complete atrocity by removing Megaton, the three addon episodes (okay, two, as Nuclear Winter was not a proper addon), adding an unmoddable, badly optimised port, a rehash of Polymer, and having crap sounds, crap new enemies and whatnot. But there were some really great levels in the episode, notably the Golden Gate level and Giza Pyramid level. It took 2 hours instead of 1, which is Sigil.

The marketing of Sigil was perfect, it cared about the fans, not just Randy's wallet. The levels were amazing, more closer to the classic Doom style (WT was very inconsistent with some maps being totally different to classic style, ie. all Levelord maps). But it's quite short, and there are some annoying puzzles like the crusher maze.

Vote goes to Sigil, but not by a landslide.

On level quality alone, I guess I will have to say World Tour, because while it's uneven in quality (a few of the maps are quite mediocre in gameplay), it still has really, REALLY good stuff like Golden Carnage, a map I will argue is one of the best ever made for Duke Nukem 3D.

Sigil is a lot more consistent in style and tone, however, and I feel much better about the idea of paying money to a guy like John Romero (and Buckethead), than I do someone like Randy Pitchford, who's an absolute scoundrel, World Tour also, in spite of its strengths, is still symbolic of the kind of stranglehold that he has on Duke Nukem.

I have enjoyed both, mind.

NC-HUD is pretty clean like that, and somewhat customizable.
It has a number of compatibility patches for a bunch of different mods, but will work fine as is with basic Doom.

Seen in my screenshot here, you have Doomguy's face, a plain healthbar, armor bar, and ammo counter, as well as a bar for your keys.
Optionally added here is a counter for all ammo types in inventory, as well as counters showing time spent on the level, along with kills and secrets.
There's also an optional bar which shows up when underwater, displaying remaining oxygen.

Anytime i replay MetaDoom on the base Doom 2 maps, it sort of breaks that one area in map 13 where pinkies spawn if you pick up a rocket launcher in that lava ceiling room.
It makes it where not even enemy actually gets out of that area.
I even switched to something like PrBoom+ and in comparision, every pinky left the secret rooms.

Did you play this with Hexen? Wrath of Cronos was originally a Hexen mod if memory serves right. If you play it with doom you need an extra pk3 loaded alongside to make it so it plays nice with Doom.

Bought Ultimate Doom off Steam for $5 then set-up with Sigil using GZDoom.

Doom feels better than I remember. Not sure if it’s my computer, but I feel like it not only runs extremely smooth (obviously) but also looks better than I remember. Level design is amazing.

All in all 10/10 experience (both Ultimate Doom and Sigil). Thank Romero.

Just wanted to bring this to the attention of more anons, since it's been requested in previous threads

If you're looking for an SC-55 soundfont for use in GZDoom with Fluidsynth, the one this anon posted seems (at least to my ears) the one most accurate posted so far
It was made by Emperor Grieferus

I also tried the Patch 93 font
and the Deemster one

But Emperor's seemed to be the closest to the real SC-55 by far, at least for me. Would love to hear from other anons to see if you agree

I think the best track to try out is "Into Sandy's City" from MAP09 in Doom2, to compare them.

Yeah, basically you can use a standard widescreen hud mod (that's not the fullscreen variety) with this and just toggle between them.

I think I may have wasted my time though, as I've found this mod to be a bit closer to what I actually want. Works with damn near everything out of the box and has a split option as well.

I don't like starting without armor or a medikit since it impacts your survivability so much that the game basically just becomes RNG rolls against enemy accuracy. Security Guard is as minimal as I'll go, although I really prefer to throw myself into a hard-ass mapset equipped to match it rather than restraining myself on something easier.

You do you, though, there's really no wrong way to enjoy HD. It's surprising to me that more people don't play on the Homely skill level when they're starting out, it's UV spawns with no bleeding and reduced damage. Ideal for learning how the enemies and weapons function without getting overwhelmed by also having to learn the medical system amidst everything else.

If you don't know about Doom source ports, the txt file tells you to get GZDoom, which uses SIGIL.wad and SIGIL_SHREDS.wad to create an Episode 5. One mistake I've seen some lesser skilled players make is quicksave too often per level. This can remove the punishment behind death, which can result in the player being careless about their health and ammo. Know the particulars of the game - sniping with the pistol and chaingun, how many shots it takes to kill enemies (shotgun, SSG, and rockets are good baselines, especially because a full hit with SSG does equal damage as a rocket), how likely enemy pain chances happen with each weapon, how to deal with every enemy's attack pattern, etc.

Then, just play it. Doom 1 (except episode 4) has pretty easy UVs compared to everything else, so when you feel confident playing UV in those eps, try UV in Doom 2.

For Chocolate/Crispy Doom, you'll want to use something like Virtual MIDI Synth to change your system's soundfont, so that when you choose "Native MIDI" under the setup program, it'll be the soundfont that you've chosen. Episode 2 is a Wolf 3D tier, half baked shit of unfinished Tom Hall maps. E2M2 and E2M6 are okay.

Episode 3 is even worse than Episode 2, it's flat out fugly, boring and nonsense. The real inferno there is your playtime over it.

Episode 4 is a mix of garbage usermaps and two Romero maps, one of which is unplayable. E4M6 is good though.

Doom 2 starts okay, but American doesn't have any kind of style, he is just doing random bunkers. But after map 07, Doom 2 became a complete garbage with nonsense, ugly, vomit inducing leveldesign. I don't blame Sandy, he didn't have time, but the maps are awful as shit. Map 27-28-29 are a rather good period, but even those maps are not on the same level as Sigil for example.

First off, you have to spend some time in the planning stage to set waypoints for all the teams and stuff, the AI will not move otherwise, it's kinda like a strategy game, but you get to play as one of the soldiers. I guess the lack of health replenish was the one thing I didn't quite like about TMB. If I was better at driving games maybe I wouldn't be as bothered by that.

It's one of the edgiest games I've ever played, but it feels like it's so deliberate and self-aware about its edge, that I end up loving it.

Sigil's single player is pretty good, but the MP is just fucking bad. 2 of the maps are literally just reskins of MAP01 and MAP07, at least two of them have missing textures in them, and almost none of them have very interesting flow or tactical interest. The only reason I can imagine these being kept in is because Romero wanted to call this a "megawad."
