So you were born in the late 80s but had no idea the Turbografx existed while growing up, just Nintendo and Sony.

Why was that?

where i grew up nobody had one or knew they existed. i also only knew one kid who had a sega. everyone else had computer or nintendo.

I was born in 1985, I got into gaming around 93/94. That system was discontinued for several years by that point, was only even sold in certain areas, and no one had one.

I saw CDis for sale in stores and Jaguars on clearance. I even played a 3DO at a store demo. I've never heard of a Turbografx until the internet was a thing. Still have never actually seen one.

I've seen consoles in used game shops before, but I never heard of one growing up, never had any friends who had one, just Genesis or SNES.

I never see games in boxes either, just loose Turbochips or Hucards or whatever they're called.

get the romset and pirate the emulator (might be better ones now no idea) and give it a go over. not the best selection but I enjoyed silent debuggers and devils crush. There was some racing rpg I messed with a few times .
and a really solid ninja game that was side scrolling.. you could get clones and fight with 4? weapons. wish I could remember it's name. I mostly played silent debuggers and devils crush outta the 16 games I had. dont really remember the rest...

No I knew. Saw it in Electronic Gaming Monthly. Wanted a Turbo Express. Alas too expensive.

I was born in the early 80s. I was aware of it from magazines, and wanted one if just to have even more games to have in addition to my Super Nintendo and Genesis. I eventually got to play one at another kid's house, just Splatterhouse. I thought it was cool but TG16 was never more than a mild want for me.

I knew it existed, thanks to video game magazines. I think Tips and Tricks had a segment dedicated to it, like they did for Nintendo/Sega/Sony systems, for instance.

My cousins had one. When they showed it to me and my brother we were amazed and couldn't wait to go back and visit them again so we could play more of their games. The answer to your question is that there was no marketing a the time and most of the major retail stores just didn't carry it outside of the major cities (my cousins lived in the middle of Boston).

No. My best friend had one and we played the shit out of it. Also there was no Sony console in the 80s.

Probably because you didn’t live in a larger city. The department stores in my semi-rural hometown certainly never carried TG-16 or Neo Geo stuff. I only ever saw it when I visited my grandparents that lived in a big city and went to their local Toys R Us.

Since OP was born in the late 80s, he wouldn’t have really been cognizant of video games until the fifth gen era was in full swing. Definitely quite a bit later than when the TG-16 was a current gen console.

why would you force yourself to play all the digital comics, weebshit and low budget stuff?

just stick to the platformers, ports and shooters by the big name companies

My household briefly had one. Great little system if you like Hudson IPs, especially Bomberman and shooters. I still emulate some of those games to this day.

My only gripes are the release of SuperGrafx and the CD add-on. Add-ons in general were a bad idea. Consumers did not like having to pay for additional hardware after dishing out hundreds of dollars for the base unit. They should have kept designing games that worked with the original hardware and left it at that.

If you didn't know then you mustn't have ever read any magazines coz they were mentioned in every single one across the globe and reviews for the games were always in them.

I don’t know. It wasn’t a very big deal. Only a million or so sold, something like that. I remember seeing commercials on TV for it. But just around the time it launched, not much after that, an announcement they slashed the price to $99, then just some magazine ads.

Seemed like NEC wasn’t going to put much effort into the system. And when it didn’t succeed immediately they just gave up.

Pictured: A $580 8-bit video game system.

To be fair, even the US itself was like this with stuff for the longest time. Movies used to be released in the major cities first and then rolled out to theaters across the country. It was totally different from the nationwide releases we have now.

Told this before, but born in 80. The only time I'd ever saw one was a friend's family rented one about every other weekend or so for about 4 months. The only thing we played was bonk. It was utterly mind blowing at the time, before genesis was common at all. My first genesis experience was a different friend in 1991, then myself and several friends in about 92 to 93. I lived in rural Iowa but this was my experience. You saw tg16 in game magazines at times, but they didn't exist in stores here.

Born in '86. NES, SNES, GB, Genesis, and GG were all I knew as a kid. Two kids I was friends with only had Nintendo systems. My cousin had the Genesis. Can't recall any T-16 commercials. Didn't have any subscriptions to any game magazines and my friend only had Nintendo Power.
