In my opinion, the new Streets of Rage could be a good game but the soul is not there. It happens the same with Final Fight. They are games which absorved the pop culture and zeigeist of their era and made that a virtue than enriched the games gave them plenty of personality and charm.

You can't replicate that because tha was almost 30 years ago and things have changed a lot. Capcom tried to update Final Fight for ps2 and the result was a disaster, and the new SOR looks like a cartoon parody of the early 90s.

Nevertheless, M2 did a great job with the remake of Fantasy Zone 2, so maybe they should have taken care of SOR4. Who knows.

I find Streets Of Rage much more fun, then again, i am the kind of insane person who thinks later Capcom and other companies beat'em ups beat the living crap out of Final Fight, Double Dragon and other early beat'em ups.

I don't care if they set the template, they just aren't as fast or as fun to play to me.

Speed's not everything otherwise the TMNT games would be the best belt scrollers ever and not hot garbage. Final Fight has slow player movement but it feels very frantic and intense because of enemy aggression and how big all the sprites are.

problem is most beat em ups are trash, repeat the same mobs over and over and over
the levels are mostly empty corridors terrain-wise, very non-interactive.

so you're just dealing with swarms of 3-4 mob types the whole game.
Boss designs are also super lazy, often have glaring weaknesses that make them vulnerable to cheesy tactics.
overall a genre you want to avoid, don't fall for the memes. Both Final Shite and Shites of Rage are garbo poopoo caca

The mobs are combined in different ways requiring different tactics, and they have a lot of randomness so encounters stay fresh on repeated playthroughs. Bosses are generally kinda crap but that's like 10%-20% of the games, and some loops are fun to execute. Then you've got multiple enemy bosses that are fun.

There are some exceptions like D&D Mystara, lots of enemy types, has items to use, and the levels aren't just empty spaces, but it's not the norm. You're right in a way but it's still fun to credit feed these games or play them with friends. Would never take them seriously solo.

Credit feeding makes all those enemy types feel samey, all those items useless, and all the interactivity pointless. The best way to play them is to 1cc them in co-op but it's not so easy to find friends who are into that, solo 1cc's are fun too though

Credit feeding is how you inevitably practice these games.
That's why practicing them is always so boring to me.

They really don't, each enemy has their own role in an encounter, different combinations force different prioritization and tactics and enemies usually have a variety of ranged and close up moves as well as getting more aggressive the further in the game you are. Also the more aggressively and faster you play, the harder and more dynamic the games get. The randomness does help a lot, very pradictable AI would get boring fast but since they're random and the games have a lot of snowballing they're very fun to play.

But you do need some kind of goal like a 1cc to aim for, otherwise all of these elements get lost in favor of endless credits and mashing devoid of any tactics or learning. D&D games have a resource management and exploration aspect that get completely obliterated by credit feeding too.

That's not true, you can just do full runs every time and stop after you game over. Granted it's slower but if you dislike credit feeding it should be more fun. Or you can just play on an emulator and use save states, practice individual levels/bosses until you can beat them without dying every time. It really is up to you how you practice.
