>All I can say is I just don't have the free time I had when I first started. On the plus (?) side, it's because my career has really taken off, and anything GCCX-related I do now is drawing official art for the show.

Hirayuki:
>And I (the SAGCCX checker/editor) am being paid fairly and well for translating a minimum of one 22-minute simulcast anime episode every week through September at the earliest, which eats into my GCCX time and, frankly, puts it at a much lower priority.

Kakaricho:
>I genuinely enjoy translating GCCX, because it always makes me learn, and I believe that life is an education.

>Say Arino is playing some game and makes a reference to something non-gaming related, years before I was born, and also, it was in Japan only. Whelp, gotta do the research to figure out what that reference was all about. Cool, this has value, I learned something new.

>But now I gotta make it work in English.
>And I've worked with very talented people to help me do this, and it's been great. Collaboration is an asset to education.

>But I have a family, and we hope to expand. That takes time too.
>If anyone can Patreon me TIME, go for it.

>Until you can...well...hope that I win the lottery, I guess.

We will probably get like 1 a year now or none at all. So if anyone wants to get the ball rolling, now would be the time. Even if it was only an episode every 4 months, its better than nothing. These threads are worse than ever now. Nothing to talk about, no new subs. The idiot thread maker just makes a new one every time a new untranslated episode comes out which is pointless. I don't think it's either of those, I think their language is just particularly distant from English. Japanese is the hardest language for a native English speaker to learn, so it would be similarly difficult for a Japanese person to learn English. Whether anyone likes it or not, they're the top result for gamecenter cx on just about every search engine, so they're essentially the face for subs. As far as I know, they don't recruit and are highly unlikely to ever pass it on to anyone else, meaning it just sits there and rots. The early subs from TV Nihon and elsewhere got shit on once we got some better translations, but it's not like amateur translations are hated around here either. If you're going to bother doing a machine translated sub, at the very least do a little proofreading-editing to make sure it's not a word salad. Fansubbing in general isn't the giant scene it once was. Most of the old anime has been subbed, leaving only long running and new series. The long runners all have groups, and the new series usually get done as soon as they appear. A lot of manga is the same way, except large parts of some old manga are unscanned and untranslated, and hard to hunt down. Most retro game translation efforts are held up by a lack of skilled hackers to get the text into the game properly. The only popular live action stuff is usually Kamen Rider or anime adaptations, and usually handled by the anime sub groups. And given how culturally centered most JP TV is, most live action JP TV fans already know moonrunes. Which leaves a very small pool of people who want the show subbed.

It's not getting any better since people have realized that fansubbing is how to get blacklisted from using their moonrune skills IRL for money. The choice between a paying job and internet buttpats isn't much of a choice.

Hold on, when anime companies entered the streaming business, fansubbers were the first people they went to. Knowledgeable, passionate, motivated and happy to finally be doing it for (a little) money. There are interviews and insights from insiders on this but the impact could also be felt from the communitys side of things just as easily.

If you put your name on it maybe, but even then fansubbers are generally the perfect fit for "legal" positions. Why hire some retard weeb when you can hire someone with the exact experience you're looking for?

Alright, but they've also sent police to arrest fansubbers as well. Compared to late 90's, early 2000's, fansubbing has shrunk.

I have fond memories of fansubs going the extra mile and adding little things that add charm to the whole experience, like karaoke lyrics and matching font colors and seamless graphical masks, and I want the subtitles I make to be a similarly charming and enjoyable experience.

There's a pretty sizable live action TV drama sub community, it's just that it's almost exclusively made up of autistic drama whores that sit in closed communities that they only allow you to be part of if you asskiss enough.

Duck man. Remember the chobits fansub wars?

You needed the guy with the perfect xvid settings to get you down to 100 megs an episode and still look good, and then your group had some subtitle wizard making jumping well timed karaoke for the OP and ed.

Chobits was a bit before my time, but that sort of competition is what once made fansubs so good.

That sort of encoding wizardry is still crazy to me.
One of the most mpressive works of subbing I've seen is the Coalguys release of the K-On movie, the Karaoke in the opening credits is truly next-level.

People make fun of it now, but I still love that stuff.

Since the thread is out of bump time, I'll give you a few thoughts on each segment.

#277:

The Game Boy is technically monochrome, not a black-and-white device. 白黒 can mean either, so use whichever one is correct in context. This might not matter very much, since they proceed to use the black-and-white palette on the Super Game Boy, but I would still have Arino say "monochrome" when they're talking about the Game Boy's specifications.

In general, I would not bother to sub honorifics, especially something as basic as -san.

You might want to add subtitles for the Pocket Printer and Pocket Camera when they're introduced, even though the English text for the Pocket Printer can be seen pretty clearly. I'm guessing that you hesitated on these or decided not to subtitle them since you used the localized names when Kibe and Arino were talking.

The TL note explaining the dakuten is jarring and feels really unnecessary. You could work around this easily by writing Kibe's sentiment rather than a direct translation of what he said. First, you could put KI vertically near the キ in the picture and add BE below it as Arino places the spider to make the ベ. "Please don't use that to spell my name" could be Kibe's response. That way, the meaning is perfectly clear without needing that block of text at the top.

I know the king's text at the beginning was missing in the original airing. I remembered that the pastebin had a screenshot of the correction in their news a few months ago, but I didn't save the link. I'm waiting to hear back from the editor to see if he bookmarked it.

"Special Report!" isn't a great translation of 密着 in the title. It's one of a series of visits, presented like parts of a travel program. You translated 密着 as "close coverage" in Kan's narration, which is more in line with its meaning, having to do with total focus on the subject.

You'll see 士 at the end of a lot of words to denote a profession. 鑑定士 just means appraiser. The expertise is implied, since that's what the job is about. Including "expert" in the translation is not needed and sounds very stiff.

Considering both of my comments above, the "Focus! Famicom Appraiser" translation here >>5634135 is better, especially when you see the animation of the magnifying glass sweeping over the 鑑定中 in the corner while Arino is examining the games, making "Focus!" feel like it works as a funny double meaning.

Again, I would avoid subbing the -san honorific after names.
Any other possible problems that I noticed were fairly minor. Overall, you're doing a pretty good job, and listening to criticism will certainly help you improve.

I should've checked my email again before posting. He gave me the correction.
