A tried and true formula that encourages exploration and makes good use of backtracking. That's why practically all FPS games, even Half-Life, use this principle.

>> No.5628348

>>5627338
Except this isn't true.

E1M1: if you go through secret door to the courtyard before clearing computer room, wall will lower and monsters there will attack you. You can also attack some monsters in nukage room from there. Unless you were fast and went back inside before door closed, only way back inside is through tunnel which leads you to the end of nukage room. Here you are outside of imp/s range. If you decide to go through door leading to final room without killing them, there is trigger line that that will lower their platform, revealing secret but also allowing imp/s to chase you.

In E1M2 roughly half of map is optional and some mandatory areas can be accessed differently changing how encounter plays.

In E1M3 once again large portion of map is optional, and some mandatory areas can be accessed differently changing how encounter plays, plus there is a secret exit.

And I could go on and on.

Only problem with half life is that there isn't very many secrets like doom had. Only one that comes to mind is on surface tension on the second map where you first exit a tunnel to go up a ladder and there was a small area in plain sight directly behind with some batteries and health
