People really need to get into the mindset that mapsets are almost never going to be as easy as Doom 1 and 2 themselves on UV. Especially because most of them are made with the expectation that the player has already completed them, and thus have taken off the training wheels.

Vanilla DOOM feels ehh after playing Build games, but I still think community made DOOM wads hold up and are enjoyable. The engine is fine and source ports allow some nice new features.
Try Alien Vendetta. It's wad from 2001 but it still holds up, it's a lot faster paced than vanilla DOOM and has nice custom textures.

Castlevania: Simon's Destiny if you're a Castlevania fan. WolfenDOOM: Blade of Agony if you want a modern shooter that plays nothing like DOOM but kind of retains the look.

I set gain to 1 and up the voices just in case. Reverb is up to you. Gain pretty much seems to be a volume slider so 1 makes sense for the sound menu music slider.

I'll be more specific then. Generally no, not unless you're buddies with the people who operate private servers. Discord in general is infested with the absolute worst kind of people and any small tidbits you can get from it are usually obtainable elsewhere, though sometimes more slowly or with more difficulty. If you can tolerate the ZDoom discord and you really need a chat group for people who play doom for some godforsaken reason then get yourself in with the admins there and get access to their private channels. Personally I'd rather eat a bullet than deal with them but obviously I'm not everyone.
There's also the /r/doom discord but that's mainly for NuDoom, and the private Doominati one if it's still up but good luck getting in unless you know Terminus or something (plus it's apparently more for modding than anything else). All in all these threads are probably far more worth your time than any discord channel unless you're fine with the kind of idiocy that comes with online personas and power hierarchies.

I get that, I dropped off from 2015-2017 so I came back to a dead IRC and discord servers galore. In my honest opinion I would say that, unless you need specialized knowledge RIGHT NOW and there are people active in that discord, these threads and the ZDoom wiki/gzdoom.pk3/gzdoom source are a far less stressful and more useful tool for social interaction and modding reference respectively. Learning to read the pk3/source especially is well worth the time investment if you're going to be modding.

I'd second this, played the first ashes and it was fantastic. Great soundtrack, gunplay and atmosphere. Hard mode made ammo insanely scarce though. Is there a second episode or a fan continuation or am I forgetting something?

Also played through Quake 1.5 and loved it, shit was fucking amazing.

Is there a decent place that categorizes Doom mods? I want to check out more of them but it just seems like a mountain of information, and I'm only really interested in total conversions or map packs.

Not exactly but there are a fuckton on ZDoom's forums.

So if you're not that deep into Doom you may not know, but you can absolutely mix and match weapon/enemy mods with maps to sort of roll your own experience. If you prefer build-like speed I'd suggest trying BURL TUMD (if you can find it) or Faspons. They work on most mapsets and alter both enemies and weapons.

the changelog in the file isn't complete tho
that changelog covers what flambeau and kb_doomer provided, but then there were a few more additional changes
from the top of my head: the e5m2 mandatory medkit pickup to open up the exit is now a bunch of health bonuses so people are drawn to it better
the inescapable bit of lava right next to the start area is now escapable
some DM visual crap was fixed
most important (covered in the changelog tho) is that the compat version now has a dehacked definition that stops the mastermind death from ending m8

Plutonia MAP07 has too many enemies for my lizard brain to handle. There's not enough rocket ammo for both the mancubi and the revenants, trying to kill the former with the SSG takes forever and generally takes away most of my health, and I don't know if it's even possible to kill the latter with the SSG given how high up they are. Is there a "trick" I'm not getting?

I'm sure it was aware of how tongue-in-cheek some lines were (e.g. rambling about the environment in the middle of his killing spree), but there are multiple kinds of self-awareness. "This is at least a little cheesy but we're rolling with it because it's fun" self-awareness is different from "dude we're making something bad on purpose it's going to be a MEME" self-awareness. Gave it a shot. Not too tricky.
Pick the zombiemans off with your pistol after you've cleaned up some mancs. (Single click and you have perfect accuracy.) It's fine if you waste a rocket on the chaingunner. Rockets or SSG for the remaining mancs. Revs weren't so bad. Clean some of them up with rockets and SSG for the rest. Keep grabbing health from the elevators if you need it. Jump in the trench if you need a breather. Just keep moving and blasting until you feel it's safe enough to head to the upper level. SSG, dodge and weave and get the megasphere.

I'll admit, I cheesed the it when the archies showed up. Ran to a elevator, flames locked on to me as it came down. I built up some speed and ran over the elevator, archie attack hit me and made me jump. Cleared the trench and then I got the fuck out of there. Couple of chaingun boys and an arach by the exit. No problem. Level complete.

Alright rate how casual I am at Doom. I enable jumping, I have a binded key that gives me megaspheres when I'm at low health, I "give X card/skull" through the console when a boring maze segment happens, I resurrect whenever I die. I mainly use GZDoom as my main source port and I have a whole bunch of postprocessing effects enabled like FXAA, AO and tonemapping like Heji Dawson but no trilinear filtering that looks terrible. I play with the default dark sector lights, I mainly noclip to skip whatever boring part of the map I'm at, I use linetarget to know the name of custom enemies and mainly "summonfriend" monster whenever I can. Also I don't mouse look.

Tab and E for inventory cycling and usage

For me Doom is much more enjoyable than Build games. There is almost no space for tactics in Build games, it's just all-or-nothing assault and the control / movement feels a bit clunky.

It really is. Sigil is more than just a mapset, it has visible artistic merits. You know, the thing that separates the true work of art from the random pretenders.

Sigil has lots of great ideas, all maps have their own narratives, lots of great design elements, not flawless by any means, but pleasure to play and look at.

Most mapsets/megawads are like... there. They are fun and all, but they couldn't manage to overcome the "fanwork" label. For instance, they usually overstayed their welcome, lots of repetitive areas and fight are in them.

Good example is Jade Earth. It's a really interesting map with an interesting design philosophy. But you know, it quickly loses its appeal when you fight the same hordes in the same rooms for 2 hours or more.

Ancient Aliens and other high profile wads suffer from this as well. Hard to tell the difference between Map05 and MaP19 or just pick randomly.

Sigil on the other hand clearly shows a master at his work. Romero clearly owed us with this release, he had his hellish snippets in the original game, but was too lazy to do a massive work of his own.

Do you always start with the Liberator in your loadout, since you can't find it out in the wild? Or do you use the mod that sometimes spawns full Liberators instead of Plasma Rifles?

Do you often keep a shitton of magazines, or do you only keep a handful and drop the rest?

When incapacitated (drop to the floor), is the only way to get back up to use a stimpack and wait like 40 seconds or so? Or can I do anything else?

Is the Slayer (double barrel shotgun) obsoleted once you find a Hunter (regular shotgun) that has semi-auto or even full-auto fire select?

Apply chainsaw to corpses to gib them and help keep them dead.
Use your derp's ability to hit switches and open doors liberally. Ping it to ambush mode before triggering it to keep it from wandering off or being attacked.
There's more you can do with an invulnerability sphere than picking it up.
You can get a rough estimate of how damaged a vulcanette is from the message when you pick it up. Note that dropping them causes some damage.

Apparently, to pick up ammo boxes (rockets, shells, 9mm, etc), you need to grab them while you're using your backpack, and THEN drop the ammo from your backpack to your floor so you can grab it yourself out of backpack mode. A bit cumbersome, not sure why Matt chose to do it that way

So midi wise, the Roland SC-55 pack (and a Roland SC-55 soundfont for Sigil until that gets a proper pack) is a good way to do Vanilla Doom Soundtrack. Now with Sigil having an alternate music pack, it obviously doesn't flow with the rest of the midi tunes. Liberator's fairly common actually, it's on chaingun, plasma rifle, and sometimes backpack spawns (as well as occasionally being found inside backpacks). You'll never find the non-bullpup variant without putting it in your loadout, but I'd say the bullpup model is better anyway. The high weight of the gun and its ammo makes it pretty niche, so it's good to be able to stick it in your backpack and not have it weighing you down while you clean up trash with more common weapons.

Just keep enough ammo for two or three reloads of each of my guns on hand. Around two or three times as much stored in a backpack once I've got one. I'll stack my pockets as deep as possible before exiting a level, since I can just drop most of it at the start of the next.

Press firemode once you've pulled out a stimpack to cycle through your options. There's also an exploit you can use to deploy DERPs, HERPs, or use your fists while downed. Cycle through all available items until you're back to nothing on the screen, then hold Fire or Altfire and press 1 repeatedly to punch or use the lunge. You might need a dedicated bind to deploy robots while downed, I've never done it myself.

When dropping from a high place, put your weapon away, crouch, and then uncrouch as you fall. You can handle longer falls better when unarmed, though sometimes it's better to just deploy a ladder.
Speaking of ladders, when you reach the top of one, turn your view around as this can help you get onto the ledge easier.
You can gib corpses with your bare hands, just hold reload to keep throwing the distracting punch, this can take a few punches but it does work. Useful for making sure marines stay down and you have no chainsaw.
When second fleshing, hit the play dead key and lay on the floor, this makes second flesh work way better.

you don't need that many weapons on you at all. think more about which ones see the most use, if you're carrying a vulcanette then you most probably won't ever need the brontornis for taking out heavy targets if they're slow enough. use up all its ammo (preferably on barons) and then discard it. lose the ZM66 while you're at it. grenade launcher also. you have a rocquette launcher. *maybe* keep the liberator.

The default 0.25 encumbrance setting is rather forgiving and you'll pretty much be fine as long as you stay in the yellow. Red is when you start taking severe movement penalties. If you want to lighten the load, drop some of those redundant weapons like the Boss rifle and the grenade launcher. Your weight is better allocated to just a sidearm, one or two primaries, and a boss killer, and the rest can be used for ammo or inventory items. You can even forego the boss killer most of the time because maps don't tend to place tough enemies without also providing adequate firepower to handle them in the same map. A rocket launcher by itself with no additional ammo provided is already enough to handle two cyberdemons, three masterminds, or six barons.

Also, you have a total limit on pocket space, indicated by the bar in the bottom-left corner, but it doesn't display accurately for any encumbrance setting except 1.0. Once that was implemented, I just adapted to playing on 1.0 all the time. It's not too hard to get used to, the numbers are easy to remember. 400 is how much you can carry before any penalties are applied, 800 is when things get bad, and 2000 is a hard limit where you become barely able to move at all and can't pick up additional weapons anymore. The limits are increased by around 200-300 units when you pick up a soulsphere/megasphere or drink a potion. Pocket space is hardcapped at 600 units. Your backpack's 1000 units of space become way more valuable when it's almost twice what you can carry on hand and you can instantly drop it as one item when you need to move fast.

It's Doom Radys, made by Toooooasty who contributed to the JPCP megawad. It's a gameplay mode where you choose different anime girls to play as, including Yuki from the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya, Sayaka from Madoka magica and Rena from Higurashi. Along with other OC characters like C.Kid depicted here, he is still working on updates for it as i'm playing an early alpha he released back in December although he has released earlier finished versions right now only a few characters from the earlier version has been implemented but the infamous cyberdog from an early version. It's a neat little gameplay wad that has more beefed up monsters like Arch viles that will instantaneously dash through the map, barons and hell knights having four arms and their fireballs will freeze you, zombiemen spawn other undead enemies and arachnotrons will climb up onto the ceiling to shoot at you from above and many more.

I made a patched version of Sigil for GZDoom and ZDoom. It no longer replaces the title and credits pictures, neither the intermission and title music (and a couple minor changes).
I also added some .ini files, You can open them with notepad and copy-paste its content onto your .ini file in the (G)ZDoom directory.

It essentially makes it so every time you load Doom using (G)ZDoom, Sigil is instantly loaded as well. (The WAD needs to be inside the directory of the source-port)

I'm playing through doom 1 and 2 on UV for the first time (I've played them before, just never committed to properly finishing them) and they're kind of confirming something I always assumed about them having played a multitude of other older shooters, that non-arena encounter design and a focus on conserving resources actively punishes aggression and offers considerable incentive to play slowly and methodically to get the most out of your resources.

The first three episodes weren't really any problem at all, but E4 has had a few levels that are absolutely horrible about being outright trial and error, E4M2 being essentially impossible unless you know through trial and error to jump down, grab the radiation suit in the lava you can't see from above and pick up the shotgun ammo up the staircase behind you, E4M6 offering you two lava moats to get into the keep, one leads you immediately to a radiation suit and one doesn't and both are clogged with enemies you don't know are there while your health is bleeding dry

From what I can tell Doom 2 is a lot better about this though, the super shotgun does a good bit to stop "sitting at a vantage point firing your shotgun at a baron of hell for 20 seconds" and ammo is more plentiful.

I think the issue is the reputation doom has gotten in the past few years is that of a fast as hell game where you're circle strafing around some big bad demon filling him with lead and the focus is on evasion and shooting, not some kind of survival horror-esque thing where if you dive around corners instead of filtering enemies as they walk down a hallway single file you run the risk of getting instantaneously perforated by shotgun guys and on certain maps if you waste more than a few shots you're straight fucked.

They all work fine, obviously you'd have to set up bonus buttons on screen -
tap gear icon on top, then tap button below it.
That will open control settings
Press "show custom". You'd figure it out from there.
Control setup is sensitive to where you are when you press it, so pressing it in menues will set up control for menues, pressing it when you have Custom buttons opened will customise custom buttons etc.

Not what I'm implying. The levels themselves are fun, regardless of how you play them. That wouldn't be the case if they were throwaway trash. There's a reason I've beaten at least a couple hundred Oblige levels. However, because they are so numerous, and generally similar in style, you're not missing out on much by taking full advantage of things ZDoom and other ports offer in terms of mobility or mods. What you miss one map, you may see in another. You're not bound by an honor code to not jump or crouch like you might be with other mega wads. You can totally play by your own rules.

While it had its tough moments, SIGIL honestly wasn't all that hard for the most part. I think It's just that some players are so used to run n gun gameplay of Knee Deep In The Dead and Skillsaw, that levels that require them to play more cautiously tend not to gel with their playstyle.
I loved SIGIL, but I can appreciate that it's not for everyone.

This one's been working really good for me. Slightly on the heavy side, but it's got everything you need. Slayer for close-range trash and making bullshit long-range shots, rocket launcher for blowing up big enemies, ZM66 for everything else.

Maybe Prboom plus? GZDoom with software mode and strict doom compat is pretty close if you still want to mod. Vanilla essence if you really want that chocolate/crispy feel in GZDoom.
