Yes. In terms of gameplay, it's more of an Action RPG, but it has a great story and soundtrack too. The story takes some weird turns. Avoid spoilers and you'll be in for a hell of a ride.

Unironically Earthbound. If you can imagine yourself as a kid again and put yourself in the main protagonist's head, you'll have a good time.

I'll accept this answer. Earthbound really is what everyone says it is.

I don't think any SNES rpg even comes close to touching Chrono Trigger, and I've never personally played a JRPG that does on any other system, either.

It's just the best you can do with the format.

FFII (IV), FFIII (VI), Secret of Mana, Link to the past, Link's Awakening, Legend of Dragoon (PS1), Alundra (PS1), Phantasy Star IV (Mega Drive), FF Tactics (PSP/PS1) and yes I really enjoyed playing FFVII and still do (sorry).

The closest to originality, music, gameplay and epic story with multiple character arcs would have to be Secret of Mana, FFII & III, Legend of Dragoon, FFVII and Alundra though. Earthbound and Terragnigma are also good suggestions posted here. If you are open to PC retro gaming check out the original two Fallout games and Planescape: Torment (the best of the best for old school turn based RPGs back in the 90s).

Was playing Blue Dragon today and it made me realize Toriyama’s involvement was probably a bigger attribute of Chrono Trigger’s overall quality than we gave him credit for.

this post is pseudo-intellectual bullshit. Greentext kid is right, but he just sucks at explaining himself. just because someone has weak arguments doesn't mean their point is wrong. the truth is the truth, whether you can explain it, or not.

attention to detail is not empty words. this is literally the judgment of whether or not the creators paid attention to small details in their work. stuff like Crono's mom waking him up, at the beginning, the caveman dance party, or the campfire scene are probably what the kid is talking about. these elements are not exciting, don't advance the plot, and don't give the player anything to do. But, they are there to make the characters and the world they inhabit feel real. they provide context for later events, and give the game a wider emotional spectrum.

shitting on someone for having a "hot opinion", when the question is "why do you like this game" is hilarious

moron does not distinguish between Story and Plot. I think Greentext meant to say CT has a great Plot, because the story is kind of generic. but the actual events, the twists and turns, the unique characters and the ways they interact and collide are actually quite good. And the general feel of a wild, rollicking adventure is not one that many games convey. most games are grimdark as fuck. CT stays as cartoony and exciting as its art style. Which is wise, because super serious games, like FFVI are embarrassingly undercut by their own cartoony graphics

>> No.5624865

>>5624461
Wrpgs are about player agency. which often means wandering around, wasting time on bullshit or trying to figure out how to advance the plot.

Jrpgs are about structure. there are scripted characters and a (mostly) scripted plot. the story and characters are more memorable, but the experience is very passive.

some people have different tastes. Personally, I love stories and interesting characters. I like Wrpgs, too, but aimless wandering and paper thin characters always leave me cold.

I don't think you can appreciate his art in modern Dragon Ball Z, but if you look at his artbooks, or his stuff for the original Dragon Ball, prepare to have your mind blown. this guy is a genius, with a very specific style. Yes, CT owes a LOT of its style to Toriyama's art

>> No.5624884

CT's fatal flaw is that it's too easy. It's just that that fatal flaw is buried by the perfect art, graphics, story progression, music, sound, mechanics, and replayability. There's certainly nothing else like it.

>too easy
I remember playing CT when I was a junior in high school and talking to a couple seniors who were playing it, they said the only problem is its too difficult.

I thought the difficulty was just right for its length and scope. You're supposed to feel powerful playing jrpgs, if you constantly get your shit pushed in like in dark souls or encounter mind-bending puzzles in every dungeon it ruins the pacing of the game and the sense of heroism.

Reading Dune is easy but I enjoy it and have re-read it a few times.

JRPGs are interactive stories you take part in with worlds and characters to explore and choices to make. They don't need high difficulty because they have plenty of content to dive into and engage with.

If you want constant explosions and fast action then there are games better suited for the ADD zoomer crowd, those games need difficulty because they are so shallow and don't have much going on, i.e arcade games.
