Was rescuing the tribals at the end of the game really that bad?
Almost everyone i've met that played this game said that they dropped the game because of the tribals.

>> No.5617480

No, it's basically just a reason to force you to explore the new levels you can get to only with certain characters or with jetpacks. They're not particularly hard to find and as long as you prioritize the brown drones that shoot them on purpose and don't fire off explosive weapons they're not in much danger of being killed.

They probably shoul'd have just let you get like 80% of them and call it a day, but it's really not as big of a deal as people make it out to be.

Only when you had to be mindful of killing them in crossfires or stopping the black bugs from beating you to them. Most of the time, they weren't much different from finding the collectables in Banjo-Kazooie.

No, it's just a parrot thing.
Finding the missing ship parts is more annoying but still not a deal-breaker.
Great game overall, people just needed an excuse to shit on it somehow.

I really, really wish there was a remake of this game with modern third person shooter controls. JFG's controls are fair but strange, and I find them hard to go back to. What a shame, this is one of the best games on the N64, maybe the best, seriously, especially if you get deep in the multiplayer with your bros

They did it in Rare Replay, and if anything, it actually made the game harder to play. JFG was simply not made to be played without the N64 controller.

I feel like you're understating it a little bit. So many parts of the game try to trick you into accidentally killing a tribal with those dumb barrels or putting drones really close so you might accidentally hit one. You could end up replaying the same area over and over again. Luckily you don't have to replay the entire level as they segment them up so you can restart smaller chunks, but at the end of the day its more padding on Rare's part to artificially extend the game. Its annoying since they didn't even need to do it, the game is pretty fucking long for a single player shooter with a huge variety of levels. I must have had like 100+ hours in that game by the time I reached the final boss.

collecting all the tribals is just how you get one of the ship parts though. it's just an annoying way to do an end-game collectathon that was meant as an excuse to revisit all the old levels as new characters, because getting the ship parts would have been enough, but they had to add a sub-collectathon on top of the collectathon.

I never finished the ship parts. There were like two pieces I never got, one of which I was from rescuing all the tribals. Rare seem to be good at this in my experience, getting the Nintendo coin in DK64 was a serious chore. That aside, the game was immersive and expansive enough that I wasn't too bothered by missing out on the final final boss.

Aiming in Rareware games has absolute range instead of relative range.
If you move the control stick 50% to the right the sight reticle will move 50 units and autocenter if you let go instead of moving 50 units more from the last position. This works fine on the N64 controller but doesn't translate well to a modern xbox analog.

I think this is the case with most N64 games that require aiming. I remember having a hard time with Sin and Punishment on Wii using a GC controller.

Theres a part of me that really wishes where we got an Gamecube sequel where it smoothed out the problems the first game had and we get the Jet Force crew in those Fifth gen graphics.

>Was rescuing the tribals at the end of the game really that bad?
Yes.
Going back through previous levels in a game because you _want_ to fuck off and look for hidden shit and 100% it is fine, _making_ the player go back and 100% the game is bullshit. What are we supposed to do after we've beat the game then? The game's already forced us to find damned near everything. Every other path, cliff, jump, we've done it.
It's also artificial content, instead of giving us more to do, the game devs just force us to do the same shit over and over again. That shit's not hard, it fucking boring.

Also, it didn't fit the game's story at all, and made me think the tribals were a bunch of greedy, self-absorbed fucknuggets.
>JFG crew behind enemy lines
>alone, damaged, they fight on, because it's the right thing to do

I'm sorry I must be stupid but I don't quite understand the distinction between absolute and relative range. Don't you want the reticle to autocenter when you let go (resetting the stick to neutral)? I guess I might not know how an n64 stick differs from a modern stick

>> No.5619834

>>5618824
The N64 stick has finer analog control than modern sticks, so it's easier for the stick and reticle to move 1:1 with each other, which is how they did aiming in N64 games. Modern sticks have fewer points that register along the analog gradient, so they're better suited to a situation where the stick just accelerates the reticle slow/medium/fast in the direction you push it with the reticle locked to the center of the screen.
