/vr/ what are some games to play that have an interesting or unique mechanic? Something newer games just don't have for some stupid reason. I know back when I had SNES there all sorts of games with awesome mechanics, gimmicks and gameplay. For example, Gimmick was freaking fun.

I remember there was a game where a guy had solar weapon or something and you could power it up by actually being in the sun with your cartridge.

Boktai: The Sun Is In Your Hands. It's for GBA. It has a sequel, Lunar Knights, with the same mechanic.

Yeah yeah, I played Lunar Knights as well. Awesome game. Speaking of which, does anyone remember a similar game, where the first stage was a fort full of orcs/goblins or something and you had the same stage select map like in Lunar Knights. I think you were hunting a vampire also.

Not really /vr/ material, but still my two favourite freeware indie games with retro graphics + unlockables:

Captain Blood has you playing a guy with space parkinson disease, more or less. as the game progresses you get the shakes, and since your mouse cursor is your hand it becomes harder and harder to just click on stuff.

Wizardry 4 was an RPG that literally pits you into the role of the antagonist of the first game as he tries to regain back his former power, while your only party members are summoned monsters from random encounters that appeared in past games and all but a few prescripted enemies are actually parties of heroes that players of Wiz 1-3 sent in to the devs after completing the games. If you thought you had it rough with some enemies in an RPG, this game will make you feel what the opposing side must've felt back then.

Another famous "four" of roleplaying wasn't any less revolutionary, as it's even today one of a few RPGs that don't even feature an antagonist. Instead, the game explores the idea of establishing a set of morals in a world previously devastated by evil. One of the main tasks to undertake in the game is to become the Avatar, a messiah-like figure which is the living embodiment of eight virtues that lead to a prosperous life.
