What the hell went wrong with this series?

Blue Sphere was the last good entry. My guess is that they gave up trying to have characters as fun as those from 2. They rode an (incomplete) anime and manga, and were not matched since.

the anime was great but it's a shame it ended when claude went to the second world

What were they THINKING?

>> No.5610169

The same thing happened to it that happened to the whole video game industry, most ips didn't survive. There was a weird refusal to return to a formula that worked and everybody wanted more of.

I even enjoy star ocean 3 despite being a huge step backwards and 4D space ruining the storyline of all the games that preceded it. In a vacuum I still enjoyed the game, but there were so many boneheaded decisions. Here is an example of the brain rot that started to haunt this ip, to go from an elegant airship system that makes the world very accessible in a game that encourages exploration, to giving you no air ship and no warp points (until the end of the game) in a game that also encourages returning to towns over and over again and tons of backtracking all over the map is 10/10 retarded, especially when the solution was already established in the series in the previous game. Star Ocean 2 had a complex item creation and crafting system that required careful planning and skill resource management, the actual process of crafting of was fast and easily accessed through the menu, making it fun and worth spending hours on. In 3, they make crafting an important part of the game, of course they dumb it down considerably, but now they make it so you have to go all the way back to the town just to do crafting...in a game with no fucking transportation. So now even trial and error is a way out of the way hassle, and if you happen to forget an item somewhere good luck. Some of these decisions are bafflingly stupid and they add up. It feels like some of this stuff came straight out of a corporate board room that never played a star ocean game and decided to overthunk and go for extra realism in a magical sci fi game. Even the private action system went to shit...and it still had enough carry over from 2, I was still able to enjoy it. The entries after were just full on retarded, the bad decisions and corporate garbage made the series unrecognizable and unplayable.

>What the hell went wrong

Can't go wrong when you were never right to begin with.

>premise of the series is to make a sci-fi RPG instead of a fantasy one
>every game takes place on a single planet with swords and magic like any other RPG and the sci-fi elements are just window dressing

I mean on a technical level I don't mind what the PSP remake did. The problem is that they tossed out a lot of the more interesting ideas of the original (like the continuous overworld between locations) for being more like SO2 (so you get just a generic overworld map). They turned a SNES game into a pseudo-PS1 game with a lot of voice acting and sorta-high resolution artwork and it gets the job done.

I wish they made a narikiri dungeon of star ocean, just a bunch of quests, grinding and combat with an all-star cast, story is there but is largely optional.

Last Star Ocean game I played was that one on PS3 where all the characters looked like dead soulless dolls. The characters were just way too fucking creepy.

yeah there's lots of stuff going on so it's probably that, but i also kind of enjoyed the story, setting, characters, art, music, etc. it just feels really epic for some reason and i have lots of nostalgia for the game

funny enough(or sadly depending on you), one of the best SO things in a while is the mobile game.
they are currently collabing with valkyrie profile, and are using that opportunity to give VP some nice content.

It's a very surreal ambient world and there is so much weird shit to find and do all over, some of which you can make sense of some of it you feel like you don't have enough information to understand that it gives the feeling of a living world around you that if you just walk around not doing the main story you'll always find something new to do or some new Easter egg, there's always something more for the player to explore. It's rare for a jrpg to capture this feeling, SO2 does the best job of it of any game I played.
