You can use Wadsmoosh to combine ultimate doom, Doom 2, No Rest for the Living, Master Levels (they have to be the individual level wads), Final Doom, and even the Xbox levels into a single PK3. I wholeheartedly recommend it. You can even use it as an iwad for GZDoom.

Inspired by an anon that posted his mod for Doom 1 to have an SSG (picked up shotguns have a low chance of being an SSG), I simply replaced the Freedoom sprites/sounds with the ones from DOOM2 and DoomSFX.

Just wanted to put this out there in case anyone else wants it but is too lazy to open up slade and copy paste some stuff. Seems appropiate for the SIGIL release, since fighting Barons and Cacos everywhere with just the pump shotgun feels kinda weak.

1. THIN AS FUCK walkways. These are EVERYWHERE. Having them appear a few times over the course of the entire Episode would have been fine (that's how the original Doom was after all), but here they're more plentiful in each level than they were in the entire original Doom between all levels combined across all Episodes.

1a. Inescapable lava pits. Those thin paths mentioned above? Many (possibly most?) of them are surrounded by lava pits. That have no way out. This is as bad of an idea as it sounds like.

2. Hallways, and lots of them. Filled with monsters. You open a door or run into the next hall and there are like half a dozen enemies and at least 2 of them are strong enough to solo your ass. This more than anything makes the mod HARD.

3. Lack of ammo and health. I actually can deal with this and wouldn't go so far as to consider it a "major issue", but it is admittedly weird to play a Doom map by the guy that designed so much of the original maps and for it to not have much ammo or health when the original Doom ALWAYS had more than enough of both.

The 2nd is a balance issue and not really game breaking. The 3rd is more of a minor complaint and will matter more to some than others. The 1st (and ESPECIALLY 1a) is BULLSHIT.

Overall I'd consider it well worth downloading. It's fun, especially for a free mod. Even worth playing to completion if you're a Doom fan. But it's not perfect. And since Doom 1 had some of the most famously flawless level design in gaming history, that just makes this look even weaker by comparison. (But, again, it's fun. Overall I enjoy it and will play it again for sure.)

I really don't see how SIGIL would be worses off with more enemy and encounter variety. It has very few tricks up its sleeve, being stuck with Doom 1 really limits it and makes certain encounters tiresome. There's nothing skillful about chipping away at Cacos or Barons with a regular shotgun, it's just time consuming. If I have the ammo, then I should be able to just SSG them.

Because way back in 1994 when people first got started making their own maps for Doom, production was incredibly small scale, there was oceans and oceans of single map .wads, or just a couple of maps .wads

Someone, (or multiple someones working together), actually sitting down and crafting full 9 level episodes, even more, multiple episodes, was the rare exception, and this was the stuff which grabbed people's attention.
I think Memento Mori was one of the very first 32 level megawads for Doom 2, a full set, and it was a crazy big deal back then.

You are absolutely right! I was going to post something like this. Sigil was always supposed to be the 5th episode of vanilla Doom. One big fan service, with gameplay in the style of original episodes, but just more difficult. And that's exactly what it is. I never expected it to be anything more, but seems like some were expecting Sigil to be something much more grand than Skillsaw wads, Eviternity or BTSX series. Those are wads are gigantic projects made by "professional" mappers with modern gameplay. Sigil is just fan service by original developer (who hasn't done much mapping for years) with intended classic gameplay.

Also the lack of pickups and darkness seem to be criticized. I played it on UV, but never did run out of ammo. There isn't much health at later maps, but yet there never was a part, that would be impossible to proceed. There never was darkness that would affect the gameplay outside one room, where you have to just fight two cacos. But then again the dark rooms do exist in original episodes.

I do have to criticize some of the design choices at the end of the seventh map (that stairway with 2 barons on top), and the unsurprising and easy boss battle, but overall for me, Sigil is still a good and fun wad.

Here are my issues with Eternity compared to PRBoom+:
>No OpenGL option at all. Some wads have extra goodies for GL players or even require it while being Boom compatible. Also, massive and/or slaughter maps run much better in OpenGL.
>No complevel toggle in the menu. If you want to play under authentic vanilla conditions, you need to launch individual maps through the command line or bat file.
>Alternative HUD worse than in PRBoom+.
>Performance is significantly lower than PRBoom+ in Software on detailed maps.
>Lacking quality of life options like having a sound play after finding a secret, old-ass vanilla automap, etc.
>Minimal extra features over PRBoom+ and it's own map format that nobody maps for.
Basically, it's much easier to use PR for purist and GZ for advanced port goals.

You would have to redo absolutely everything from the ground up (short of maybe Shatner's clips), it needs more than just polished up graphics or tightened controls.

I've never read the books, but there's a bunch of them, so I assume they must have done something right if people kept buying them, it got a TV show too,
and I figure the premise of "It's the future, find and eliminate these cyber druglords", is perfectly serviceable. You can have a partial emphasis on stealth and infiltration, you could have a bunch of character interaction, some minor puzzle solving here and there, etc, etc.
I mean, "Open-world cyberpunk FPS on the Build-Engine" sounds pretty fucking good.

The problem was Capstone Software, and I think they just so thoroughly failed at basically every aspect of designing a game like this.
The Matrix section alone I think is grounds for life imprisonment given how fucking nauseating, seizure-inducing, and eye-straining it is to look at, and how bizarrely bad it is to play.

So I'm not a modder, but I play more mods than I think most people do, so I thought I'd put together my most common complains about 90% of Doom mods/maps and see what you guys think.

1. Level too long.
The level takes 40 minutes to complete and there is no natural stopping point until the end. You need to give the player a stopping point so they can go do other stuff. Split the level in half if you have to, just give me a point where I can naturally stop and go do laundry or some shit because I've been listening to this same midi loop for the best part of an hour and your wad is outstaying its welcome because you haven't given me an excuse to stop and wind down.

2. Enemies look the same, but are not.
Everybody has fought an Imp. Everybody knows what an Imp does and how much punishment it takes to put one down. So if you have altered the look or the behavior of the Imp in any way, make it look different. Don't keep me fucking guessing what the monsters are going to do because you've fucked with the stats yet not changed their sprite.

3. The great switch hunt.
Ok, so you sent me on a 15 minute diversion and all I found at the end was a switch. What does this fucking thing do? It opens that door I post 12 minutes ago yet completely forgot about because it didn't do anything? Maybe just put a picture of the door or something next to the switch to jog my memory because I'm getting old, son. I know you can do a custom texture. I believe in you.

4. Stop remaking E1M1. (Both of them)
Why would you want to start off your wad reminding me of the most throw away levels of both the original games?

Delta's map made my frame rate go from 500 down to 200 on the start of Doom 2 map01.

IIRC delta used some insane system that spawned checked heights or spawned actors or whatever around the player. It must also have drawn pixels individually, which is a lot of overhead.

This directly iterates through all the lines in the level and uses the now-native line drawing function, and it also skips lines outside the boundary completely.

Load a hud after Smooth Doom. Typically I put Smooth Doom at the very bottom of my load order so it gets parsed first, and then anything that needs to overwrite the assets can do so freely.
Is smooth doom broken for anyone else? I downloaded the latest and I can't walk over enemy corpses anymore. I thought it was a conflict with nashgore but that was it's own problem.
If not, does any have a link to an older version of Smooth Doom? I accidentally overwrote my copy with the broken one.

It was a buggy mess with broken mechanics on release. Then it never got properly patched. Years later it did by fans and is actually a decent game now. Even in the patched state though it's just decent,like a 6/10. Even for the time it wouldn't have been particularly unique or special.

The zeitgeist around it comes from a mix of marketing (being Romero's bitch), how that sounded to 90% of us who had no clue who he was even as fans of Doom, and the fact that it flopped pretty hard. It's stuck because who wants to give a broken crap game a second chance 20 years later? Fan patches rarely polish a turd so well.

can someone help me fix this?
Im trying to play through PSX DooM TC the one I found on doomworld forums alongside with brutal doom but I dont know the hud the messages on screen and the weapon sprites I am holding are fine and have the correct aspect ratio while the sprites of the objects in the map look stretched
I dont understand why this is happening
see that door? alongside with monsters, barrels and decorations like candle sticks and stuff all look out of proportions..proper if they were widened
I assume this has something to do with the PSX TC because it is fine with any other wad

You know what was a wholesome experience? Playing HDoom co-op with 2 other friends. Let me tell you something.

We did this with vanilla doom2, no map pack or anything. I think we also did this with GZDoom. MAP01 was, "haha this is funny haha watch me fuck this imp haha." but then MAP02 hit and shit got real.

MAP 02 was when we figured out the meta for HDoom. We were playing on UV and we kept getting our asses kicked. No matter how many Imps and Pinkies we fucked we would face their tight-lipped wrath sooner or later.

But...There was hope. We found out that when you fuck a demon you have invulnerability during the animation. We used this as a tactic to get past levels without dying. It was like playing a cover shooter game except instead of hiding behind a concrete pillar we would get a blowy-joey from a Lost Soul and use the animation invulnerability to move from room to room and fuck more demons.

I think HDoom gives Hideous Destructor a run for it's money.

I played it with the patch a few months back. It's still bad. Fuck you.

Even with the patch (and AI partners you have to babysit turned off) it is unenjoyably boring for the most part.
There are a few moments with a scenery that wouldve been nice... 2 years prior to the game's release, but were barely ok when it came out.
The fact that first few levels are absolute garbage in every way and are the worst part of a game does not help.
