5604696 No.5604696 [Reply] [Original]

Why do CRTs make retro games look so much better?
Is it the scanlines? The texture? The inherent anti-aliasing effect it has on those chunky pixels?

>> No.5604698

the fact that they're designed to be displayed on one.

It's the fact they are standard-resolution games that are meant to be displayed on CRTs and not at stretched resolutions on high-definition resolution screens.

I use an Ntsc filter if available, otherwise bilinear plus a minimal amount of memelines.
Overscan is only really noticeable in NES games when they use the part of the screen that's "supposed" to be cut off as a garbage dump, Mario 3 is a good example. I remove 8 pixels on all sides (based on mario 3) but there was no standard on tvs for how much screen area is blocked and some developers ignored nintendo's guidelines, like in Castlevania 1.
Curved screen effects just look like a fishbowl, 2real4me.

The NTSC cable mixed the colors, by distorting the signal.

The Tube would make the sprites look rounder, if it was a shadowmask or would hide the blockness if you was an apperture grill because of the scan lines.

It had a bloom effect, that made the whites look like was shining.

It has deep blacks, which is great for contrast.

The phosphors would leave a subtle trail, giving a sensation of movement in older tvs.

Some of these stuff can be emulated, like scanlines.

I believe it's needed a 4k or 8k display to proper display all of the phosphors correctly.

But there's one effect that is impossible for now, that is the deep blacks, no monitor is capable of doing blacks like the one that CRT had.

Most are really hard to do correctly, but it's possible. A CRT is not necessary with a perfect emulation.

Shouldn't we start an Open Source project?

I don't know much about programming though.

ANSI contrast is horrendous on CRTs. And CRTs are grey when off and not black, so even if you play with the lights off, any light reflected by your walls or whatever will wreck whatever contrast there was.

> any light reflected by your walls or whatever will wreck whatever contrast there was.
I don't know the physics, but the blacks of CRT were almost perfect.

> OLED
I heard that OLEDs had good blacks. Never used one though.

A very good emulation on a 4k or 8k with a high hz tv would probably do the trick.

240 hz TV would be need for displaying the fading trails.

There's a CRT emulator from a game called Super Win the Game.

It's not accurate, but it really feels like an old CRT. He even distribute a version of the CRT emulator for free.

Real talk: there are valid points on both sides.
While claiming that modern high-resolution screens look bad is ridiculous (some games arguably look better, whether intended or not), CRTs did have intrinsic advantages over other technologies, such as objectively superior contrast and much better scaling (since you don't have the concept of a native resolution).
A modern, high resolution TV (say, 4K or even 8K) with native-resolution content clearly looks better than any CRT did when it comes to sheer image detail. But considering the aforementioned CRT advantages, it would have been interesting to see CRTs being developed further to see how a hypothetically modern, quality CRT would compare against a LED/LCD or OLED screen.
It's sad that LCDs outright replaced CRTs instead of merely becoming an additional choice.

Yeah, I've tweaked it a lot, it even has an option for shadow mask in its config files.

But you can't load any game with it, and Retro Arch is little bit clunky.

A standalone app would be ideal, like the one from the Super Wind the Game designer.

>>5611642
That guy is troll.

But yeah, I'd use a HD set if I wanted block pixels, I don't think it makes sense to output RGB on a CRT. A framemeister would do the trick for the scanlines.

I normally play with the light turned off.

You're the one talking shit.

Most of the lighting problems are solved by turning the lights off.

And yes, even in a lit room the contrast is great. Stop thinking the world is a shit article or forum post that you read.

You are a fucking butthurrt idiot if you try to argue any other way. Crt treyro gaming has a discussion factor that cannot and will not ever be replicated. Man up and accept it.

What do you think about the Sony KV-32FS13 and KV-32FS100 for retro gaming (particularly hooking it up to a computer through S-Video or Component) for emulation?

Is the KV-FS100 worth paying more for? What do you think these are worth?

Since OLEDs were mentioned I thought I might warn you fags...
They have a very short lifespan. Within a year you'll get visible degeneration and probably in under 5, the color and contrast will be noticeably inferior to an equal LCD of the same age.
You have been warned. OLEDs are the new Plasma.

Not him, but CRT has no A/V lag, no scaling artifacts and they produce a subjectively better image than a modern TV does.
If you get the chance, try one out and see if you like it. It's hard to describe a CRT image and photos never do them justice. You've probably had a CRT, but they've been gone for so long now that most people have forgotten how they look.
>>5616785
Don't shit on Plasmas man. My friend still has a 2010 LG Plasma in his house and it's one of the best modern TVs I've seen. Only real downside I can see is how quickly they burn-in compared to other TVs.

Plasma recharge though is expensive. They don't last too long.
Even LCDs have limits. I've lost a few PC monitors, but not their screens. Likely some internal electronic component. I have one Samsung 1680x1050 monitor from about 2007 that still functions well. The screen quality hasn't really gone down. And my main two Asus IPS panels are about 4 years old and also image-stable.
But OLEDs begin decomposing pretty fast. The materials used to make them being organic, they don't take too much time to fade. Just like blue LEDs are very finite.

Good CRTs really are the gold standard for toughness and longevity. Sadly their manufacture is very resource and energy intensive and with the earth's human population blowing up way out of proportion, we can't afford to be making billions of CRT sets.

We really must cull humanity down to less than 400M or so.

My kuro is fine. No burn-in. OLEDs are fine too, but somewhat problematic if you're poor and play the same game with bright static colored elements for a thousand hours. They don't degrade measurably with normal use, so stop being a retard. Rtings test has been going for 5000 hours and they prove this. If that's not good enough, then I suggest you literally eat shit and die.

Quality goods require more resources and energy to make. The more the human population continues to blow up, the less quality will be possible. Only elites and their (((friends))) will be allowed to have high-quality goods.

This goes for TVs as well. Even back in the day, only companies and institutions really got the best quality sets, AKA PVMs/BVMs/etc. Consumers were often left with low-tier garbage.
