1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, Tactics, and MAYBE 8 and 9 are potentially worth playing. All are reasonably decent for what they are. If you don't like JRPGs then they won't change your mind though.

2 is trash. Mystic Quest is mediocre. Everything from 10 and on is linear faggotry.

They're all good and worth playing except for the online ones, which is also the point (at 11) the focus becomes overwhelmingly narrative in the offline games although 12 is still very interesting mechanically.

Some games especially the early ones benefit from bug fixes in later versions.

7 is the game where all the philosophies align the most perfectly so of course you should play it, you might even want to play it first. Anyone who hates on 7 is just being a contrarian.

Don't cheat yourself out of the best experiences in life because they're recognized as such.

>Is this worth doing?
Unless you never played JRPGs or you didn't play much, no, they're not worth playing outside of the NES trilogy, mostly for historical value too.
If you wanted a casual, entry level JRPG series I'd rather suggest you to play Dragon Quest, unless you dislike Toriyama's style that much of course, FF offers nothing special or particularly well done outside of the graphics.

That said, you should form your own opinions on things instead of shitposting on anonymous imageboards and call anyone who disagrees on something a contrarian, so pick up a game and play it, start with FF1 or 7 depending on how you feel like.
NES FF1 is kind of a bugfest so I suggest you to play the PS1 remake, disregard the GBA or PSP versions, they're garbage that changes the core mechanics and casualize it even further, same for FF2 if you're interested in it.
As for FF7, PS1 is the way to go, unless you want to play the modern ports with built in cheats, which tell an awful lot about how even Square thinks they're games not worth playing, but that's something for another thread.

>I've always wanted to play every Final Fantasy.
>Is this worth doing?
I don't know. I'd say probably not. If you did I'd recommend the following order

1. FFIV. The most bread-and-butter Final Fantasy game, the first iteration of its signature ATB battle system. It's well-balanced and well-paced and can be easily finished in 20ish hours. The only issue is deciding which version to play since there are several. (My recommendation is either the SNES version with hacks to replace J content, or the SFC version with a fan translation)

2. FFVII. If you liked FFIV, you might as well go ahead and play the most famous one. This one also is the complete opposite of FFIV as far as customization. Where FFIV has all fixed classes and abilities, FFVII has a highly flexible system.

3. FF, FFV, or FFIX. This depends on what you liked about the previous two games. If you really loved the materia system, play 5. If you really loved sitting on your ass and not playing the game while watching long cutscenes, play FFIX. If neither of those sound good to you, maybe try FF1.

4. FFVI. This game strikes a nice balance between the older SNES-style and the story-heavy PSX style.

At this point you should be able to figure out how you want to finish, if you want to bother at all.

5 on SNES

i'm using strategywiki all the time and fast forwarding and doing the self attacking trick and i'm still barely pushing forward and questioning if i should skip halfway through and if i should even be doing this shit in the first place at 23
deep down though i know i've always wanted to do this and this is probably the only one that will feel like work. beating FF1 already felt great and i know i'll be into the other good ones all the way after committing this much.

All I would add is 8 and 9 are in fact worth playing, 2 is worth playing on the Dawn of Souls gba remake. And 10 and up are trash, with except to 11/14.

I loved 10, liked 12, game is great but story is pretty much botched to hell by Square Enix forcing the game to be ruined. 15 I have and just stopped playing as it was not interesting to me at all. 10 is probably the best of the ones I don't personally like. 12, I haven't played but I know what the game play is like, not enough jrpg in the games anymore.
13 I've played and beaten, I enjoyed it's game play but it simply wasn't a final fantasy game for me.
15 I haven't played but probably would enjoy it if I did, still not jrpg.

4 is my favorite but I genuinely enjoyed all of the original series. 8 is the weakest because of the draw system/card refining system.

I agree with this guy, I'd give 5 and 12 a better review though, but not by much.

Unless your a full colours weeaboo and swoon for this bullshit, it's an inconsistent series. When it's bad it's not terrible, but would you want to sink 50 hours into a just okayish game? I wouldn't, but I did with 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

Also I'm going to get put on blast for this but I enjoyed FFVII prequel Crisis Core. I really enjoyed it.
