Tell me more about Dragon Quest

I am playing through DQ3 i'm about to leave Portogoa to get Black Pepper. On one hand the game is alright but I'm getting frustrated with the shoddy translation so it's hard to look up what anything does.

I feel like I had more fun in Final Fantasy 5, I looked up Dragon Quest 6 but it looks almost the same as 3 and will need a translation too. I just heard you could get slime characters?

So what is the best Dragon Quest game?

It's fun to build your own party.
DQI is like Wizardry or Ultima, but with only one character.
DQII started the party trend, but it's very unbalanced in the sense that your other characters are worthless.
DQIV has a storyline divided into chapters. You play as a different character until the last chapter, where you play as the hero. You don't control your party characters, but you can setup the ai and there's a cheat code to enable manual control. The nes version has some bugs, like a character using a instant death skill when it won't work. The ds/mobile version has updated graphics, a new intro, a post game chapter, a new character, improved ai and party chat (mobile only), which gives more deep into characters since they become walking cardboards when they join you.
DQV is considered the best in the series, mainly because the storyline goes through three eras. You play as child, then as an adult who gets married and a final chapter with your family. Has recruitable monsters and the best soundtrack in the series, imo. The ds/mobile version have the same changes as IV, but it also adds a new wife.
DQVI is sometimes considered the worst, but because it declines after certain point, it feels like a rough version of DQVII.
If you want something like FF5, VII has a job system, but it's not recommended for welcomers as is quite extensive.

In my opinion the best ones are V, VII and VIII in no particular order.

Hero/Soldier/Sage/Sage or Hero/Soldier/Fighter/Sage is usually the way to go till endgame. mostly because Sages are basically a straight upgrade and a combo class of cleric and mage that makes the latter virtually redundant. Pretty sure this is never the case with any item in any DQ game. If I remember correctly, the Orochi Sword lets you cast Increase for free if you use it as an item in battle. The trick is putting it in a convenient spot in the inventory so you can quickly select if, if you plan to spam it instead of using your own MP for Increase.

Class changing let's you get warriors with and martial artists that can cast spells. You really only need to change your mage to a warrior after getting bikill and whatever to a sage when you can. Also the best part of the game is coming up. Keep in mind the original came out in the early months of '88. It's basically the jrpg form perfected and is the template for essentially every one made since then.

>Tell me more about Dragon Quest
It's a grinding simulator. The sequels don't necessarily improve upon anything, they just add more creative ways to grind.

>So what is the best Dragon Quest game?
IMHO, I started losing interest after the second game. So I'll say the second game was the pinnacle of the series. Other anons are certainly welcome to disagree with that assessment, but I doubt they can do so without sperging out like autists. Which should speak volumes about how productive it is to post such an inquiry on /vr/ of all places.

None of the other DQ titles resonated with me, because there was too much rehashing of existing ideas and assets, and not enough plot substance to hold it all together. When DQ does implement something new, it's a lot of wasted potential. e.g. DQ3 has a rich class system, but when you get right down to it, there's no reason to use half the classes or care about min-maxing - as always, grinding and mashing the A button will eventually lead you to victory.

>>5601363
>DQV is considered the best in the series
No it isn't. There's one or two anons on /vr/ who have a severe autism boner for DQ5, but it's definitely not the most mainstream or widely celebrated entry in the series. It's the third DQ game that gets the warmest reception overall, especially in Japan. This is common knowledge.

This downside only applies to people who enjoy grinding incessantly before doing a new area or dungeon, which is quite unnatural and not how most fans play. So your opinion really misses the mark.

>>can't cast an effect-spell on an enemy without it failing half the time
You have to know which enemies have a high percentage of being affected by it. You learn as you play through DQ games, but there is usually a pattern. For example, sleep spells tend to work 90% of the time on big ass mammals or dragons. Surround spells almost always work on enemies with high attack power.

It's all determined by percentages, at least in the old games. All enemies have a percentage associated with each spell. 0% is immunity, 100% means that it will never fail if used agains them and then there is 25%, 50% and 75%. The enemy types are usually easy to discern, so you can practically tell these percentages by simply seeing the enemy and identifying it as a certain type of creature.

In the old NES games, these percentages affect the attack spells too, which is pretty interesting. A fire spell may fail to hit an enemy but hit another enemy of the same type, just because the chance of hitting wasn't 100% and one of them avoided it. It's pretty well balanced, actually. When an enemy is 100% susceptible to a spell (say, a fire monster getting hit by ice), not only is it guaranteed to always hit, it also does a lot more damage. The
spell damage is also kind of random and determined by percentages. When it hits an enemy, the amount of damage you do is determined by their percentage of resistance to that spell. So you can theoretically do max damage to a monster with a spell they are resistant to, it's just unlikely (25% chance). Resistances and weaknesses in DQ are not like "X takes less damage from Y" or "X takes more damage from Y". It's all about percentages. Being resistant or weak to a spell only determines the chance of being hit by it and the chance of receiving more or less damage. But anything can theoretically happen, as long as it's not 100% or 0%.

Tell me what you think about this

DQ3 is great for a few reasons and only borders on average at worst

It's fairly challenging but dying is not a huge punishment like in final fantasy where you just get kicked out of the game. You can start over immediately and keep all your gained items and expierience. Ex. I killed Orochi 1 then died on Orochi 2 but i got to keep Orochi sword and only had to kill orochi 2.

You can't really make OP characters

Gold is tight early on which adds to the challenge and you have to decide what items to buy and leave behind

Mana is a precious resource and you can't stock 99 ethers to continue forever, multiple trips to a dungeon first to loot then to run to the boss sometimes makes sense

Exploration is good, day/night system is great, remember-text mechanic is really great

Multiple Animated battle sprites on every monster before Pokemon did it

Good music although it gets re-used a lot
