NES. It looks, sounds and plays the best. The remakes replaced the trippy snowy caves and their weird ass multidimensional walls in which you can see the stars in space... with boring ass generic brown caves. Just compare level 1-5 or the "inside the pyramid" levels from world 2 and tell me they didn't fuck up the extremely interestng art direction of the original. They also got rid of the "play" theme of the whole game.

I strongly recommend playing Super Mario Bros 3 Mix. It's a fantastic rom hack that may as well be an official sequel and is the second best Mario game of all time, right behind the original SMB3. Seriously, play that shit. You won't regret it. It's incredible how many mechanics were introduced to such an old game, including a save system, and every single world has levels based on a different game in the history of Mario (like Mario 1, 2, 3, 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, etc). The gravity levels in the Galaxy world are great.

All Stars more like All Trash
Only lost levels is needed in the whole poackage.

>> No.5597892

Play them all and decide for yourself which version sticks with you the most. Although there's no reason why you should have to commit yourself to one version or another. The game is fairly easy to clear.

I usually go to the GBA version with all the e-stages patched in and the palette reverted to the SNES brightness. The SNES version is great, but I do most of my gaming on my GBA.

I remember loving the grass in level 1-2 and the sand in the... second? level of World 2 when I was a kid. The whole aesthetic was just really pleasing to look at. Just a single uniform green/yellow color covered black dots. Really simple and charming. The remakes have some interesting parts art-wise, but they are generally a major artistic downgrade.

That one level from late in the game in which you fall down through an empty black pit full of floating platforms and eventually arrive at some cave, I always loved it. But the all stars version butchered the visuals HARD. I always let myself fall down instead of climbing up the platforms so I could see the alien-like red palette swap of the usual white space-cave at the bottom. I was disappointed to end up in some boring cave when I played the remake.

The bizarre space cave levels inside the pyramids also had some gameplay elements unexplicably removed. In the original, some stars in the background would look much brighter or even have a different color, hinting at an invisible block. The generic caves in the remake have the invisible blocks but nothing to hint at them.

>> No.5597958 [DELETED]

>>5597890
>the trippy snowy caves and their weird ass multidimensional walls in which you can see the stars in space
This so fucking hard. It's one of the reasons SMB3 is my favorite, it really captured my imagination as a kid. Especially when you entered a door on the side of a pyramid and the inside was... so fucking bizarre. It looked like you entered a pocket dimension inside the pyramid, an entire universe full of floating red space rocks, weird alien creatures (buzzy beetles look really weird in this game and tend to only show up in these strange levels) and the vast space full of stars in the background.

Hell, even the 5 seconds long pipe "levels" that transported you from one side of the map to another used that same weird snowy cave in the middle of space aesthetic. It was a pleasure to look at every time I used the pipes, making them much less tedious.

The NES version also lets you shoot green fireballs at the toad houses, which I always found funny.

>> No.5597970 [DELETED]

>>5597940
That level did lose something in the transition. I believe they even added some unnecessary background pipes to the free falling section, which was just a mysterious pitch black screen in the original with shit floating around, very reminiscent of when Alice fell through the rabbit hole.

Same with that one level where you can enter the right side of the screen to come out from the left and have to use the transparent arrow platforms to go up a maze of pipes. Adding detail to the pitch black background made the whole thing look incredibly boring. It took away the magic and WTF factor of the original visuals.

NES version looks like it uses placeholder tiles for half the levels, and the background pieces are of a specific shade or use only 2 colours because that's all the hardware can push.

The only legit argument I've seen so far against All-Stars is that the art change made some clever hidden parts too obvious or too hidden (like the block of bricks in 8-1 or 8-2? or SMB, that is made to look like a background brick tile).
And that the physics of hitting a block is wrong, but even that part is nitpicking by speedrunner faggots.

I'm playing on a Wii over a CRT. Not through virtual console, but RetroArch. I understand input lag is real, but with other platformers it feels like I can jump off the ground right after I land without issues. With SMB3 it's kinda different, almost as if I have to wait a few frames for it to allow me to jump.

What's funny about that statement? If you have to plan your shit more often, your character feels heavier and such, it's not that enjoyable.

However current methods of emulation coupled with decent displays make it to where the difference between it and real hardware + crt is so minimal that it's not worth using the second option.

Play GBA for the extra e-reader levels and nice graphical upgrade to Mario Bros.

All-Stars is a solid remake.

Some of the backgrounds are weird compared to the original but honestly the save feature makes it overall much better and for the most part the graphics and sound are great.

I can see people like the aesthetic of the original more but they both do different things great. Saying either looks like shit is an exaggeration which is typical for this board filled with faggots.

Honestly I'd recommend playing each version of the first four Super Mario Bros. games.

At least it's a proper reimagining of SMB1, unlike SMB3 which is just the same game with all the unintentionally trippy stuff replaced by boring shit.

I can't believe they went through the trouble of making SMB1 look this pretty and didn't bother recreating the physics properly or even playtesting it. Anyone would notice that the unpatched block physics ruin your momentum and feel like shit.

I've always strongly preferred the NES version. It's got a way more unique aesthetic, both among Mario games and among platformers in general. I'm not really an art guy, but it's got this pop art sort of look that I really like. The SNES version still looks pretty good, but everything is pretty generic all things considered. You know, regular old caves and sky backgrounds that you can see in so many other games.

The other thing I don't really like so much in All Stars is the sound design, particularly the sound of stomping on enemies. To me, it comes across as the sound that you'd get when your attack was ineffective. And in-general, while I typically am a fan of the SNES sound chip, it just doesn't seem to quite work for Mario games. Aside from a few bopping tracks, I feel the same about SMW.
