What's the rarest/least known retro computer you own? Pic related is mine. I have an Amiga 4000 too but you hear people talking about that all the time. This is a niche of a niche here that lasted less than a year.

i found this Mattel Aquarius at a thrift shop the other day for 4 bux. pretty nothin-to-write-home-about "4 kilobytes and a z80" color computer from 1983; it was discontinued at approximately the same instant it first hit store shelves. this one's missing its cartridge slot cover unfortunately, but it works okay.

eh, i'd say it's about average for a cheap early-eighties machine. Plastic appears to be something other than ABS; feels a little on the flexible side but not too creaky. Keyboard's rubber, a bit less mushy than the ZX spectrum's, although still worse to use since the keys are just a bit too closely spaced to be comfortable.

Since this thread has tons of Japanese computers, I need to wonder just what happened to Japanese PC developers. It seems like they were everywhere and developed games for every computer format when there were dozens, but once Windows (or even DOS) came around to standardize the platform, they just quit altogether. Did the Japanese just hate Windows or was it just a coincidence and they all jumped to consoles (much like how western PC developers did, but to a much lesser extent)?

>> No.5598597

>>5598568
I mean Anon, PC developers in the US had a really hard time basically from the time the PS1 came out to the popularity of Steam, despite some quality releases it very much was not the place to be.

>> No.5598621

>>5598568
>standardize "the platform"
That's like saying all home computers are "the platform" instead of each different type. And it's part of the problem. Each different architecture had pretty specific standard parts that devs could expect all users to have, including specialized video and sound hardware, accessory inputs with (sometimes) standardized controller layouts, etc. Much like consoles. As those faded away, the wide open PC clone spec allowed for many different standards that devs could no longer expect 100% of users to have. Instead there was now a wide range of CPU speeds, evolving display standards, multiple sound card standards, no standard controller, etc.

>> No.5598631

>>5598621
(cont.)
And we're talking about DOS here, as Windows gaming was very small before Windows 95. So drivers for all these different components were a pain for users and developers alike. There was no DirectX, they had to code for all these competing hardware standards directly.

Some really nice things in this thread. I feel unworthy posting my dinky 486 laptop, but here it is. Not my pic, but it is the oldest one I own at the moment.

A Compaq Contura 410C
Intel 486 DX2 50mhz
8mb ram
350mb hard drive

It's a nice little Dos machine from the mid 90s. Not going to run anything spectacular, but Wolf3D, Sim City and similar games work well enough.

A large number are doujin titles, so many PC games only exist through Comiket.
The usual platforms the Nips sell PC games through are Toranoana, Digiket, DLsite, DMM/Fanza, Getchu & Gyutto.
There's at least 5x the number of Japanese Windows games compared to PC98. They just:
A. Don't like Westerners
B. Can't find translators
C. Don't care to put in the effort
D. Think Steam is shit (fact: it is)
The other thing is that either Westerners don't care to look or that """preservationists""" are biased mongrels that won't touch PC games "cuz it's too hard & costs too much money".
Check vndb.org (Visual Novel Database). There's an "action" tag to separate the titty games with actual gameplay.
General freeware sites with some sold products are vector.co.jp, freem.ne.jp and freegame-mugen.jp (elog.tokyo is their NSFW version).

Any idea what it’s worth?

The PC-98 series does run MS-DOS. A few text mode PC programs can even run on the machine, but the differences in hardware will cause issues for anything beyond that (like, screen memory is in the wrong place for starters).

They're actually worth no more than $20, you can get pristine CIB ones for $40-50. Unlike what >>5600449 says, the Sinclair ZX-81 (and it's American Timex counterpart) does have a place in computer history, but that doesn't make it valuable.

I remember a few years ago that some 2d platformer doujin game (I forget what it was, I think it was the one where the "holy crackers" meme is from) sold reasonably well on steam once some random translators approached the developers and offered to sell the game via steam. Apparently the developers were thrilled at the prospect and gave them the go ahead. Looking at Japanese PC games can be really interesting, a lot of early ones weren't ported by the Japanese themselves, usually by a western company (eg westwood for Resident Evil), and this continues to be the case even today, but the Japanese do seem to make their own ports from time to time. It just seems like they tend to target Japanese spec PCs and not western ones, since the Japs are more likely to use low power work computers than high output gaming systems, hence the random FPS and resolution locks.

There are tons of amazing Saturn games, you'll love it. People say PCE is the king of shooters... it has a lot of them, but I found them all pretty boring. None were half as good as Dodonpachi or Battle Garegga.
