changes around a lot of the weapons and makes the monsters have different 'ranks'. Like Imps, pinkies, sergeants can have 4-5 different variants with different health/special attacks and the human enemies carry different weapons.

Seriously, what the hell were the devs thinking when they designed the revolver? The secondary fire-mode obliterates the need for any other weapon in the game, at least if you're fighting humans. The lock-on mechanics are bad enough, but it gets infinitely worse when you think about that the games has headshots. They could've made something sensible like just firing a bunch of bullets in a short time, or at least mitigate this game breaking piece of shit by making the ammo more scarce but you can find some on every second corner and enemies drop it regularly.
It seems like a feature solely added for "accessibility", aka a games journalist mode. As it is, this has no place in a self-styled oldschool FPS which claims to prioritize speed and skill.

I shouldn't be this mad but I am, because the rest of the game is actually fun.

All of the guns are overpowered. Everything can kill everything in one or two hits and is capable enough that there's no real reason to consider what weapon to use beyond what you feel like. It lacks the "guns as tools" design of old school shooters where weapons have particular strengths forcing you to interpret fights and choose the right weapon for the job. The pistol is just one symptom of the overall problem.

As it stands, the Red Dead secondary fire is nice for those little flying shits.

Overrated mediocrity that is worse than most old-school FPS.

The whole game feels like "piecemeal situations: the game". The monsters don't compliment each other, so you end up with 'the marine part' 'the female assassin part' 'the alien grunt part' instead of situations where you fight mixed groups of enemies that support each other.

Half-Life's level design is also worse than other FPS. It takes place in Black Mesa, this massive facility, but since it's completely linear, it doesn't take any advantage of that like Hexen, Strife and System Shock did with their hub worlds. At the same time, Half-Life also lacks the variety other FPS had with their unique self-contained levels, nor does it have something like Unreal's epic journey across an alien planet. It's the worst of both worlds.

Just beat Guncaster: Vindicated. Pretty fun. For the first part, anyways. Second the maps all felt like they were ripped from another mod and the last is a cluster****.
Normal Guncaster is better outside of lacking a campaign. This in its attempts to 'balance' the mod just makes 90% of your options not worth using. The campaign itself is also a complete dick with giving out ammo, gold or really any resource other than small hp items. I got through the more annoying parts by just popping berserk and the gold item and punching enough things to buy another berserk.
Magic is infinite with patience but its also strangely underpowered. It was in vanilla, too, compared to guns. So this made all spells cost more. They largely aren't worth using when pressing M1 is just entirely better.
I think its progression fits doom better than other ''doom but with progression'' mods. Meaningful upgrades to your guns, new toys to play with, etc. Not ''you get to level 30 and all enemies paralevel anyways lolf''

I think that if your starting basic weapon is so reliably powerful that you can depend on it to easily solve 99% of all encounters at any difficulty, I would say that there's some problems with balance.

Why have the other weapons if the first one does what they do better? It's one thing to make the typical FPS starting pistol more useful, but you kinda need to have some balance too.
Duke Nukem 3D's pistol is a good example, it's far more useful than Doom's pistol, while not being so potent that it outright can reliably fill the shoes of all the other weapons.

I mean imagine of Doom gave you the BFG as your starting weapon, and there was always 1000 cells in every level, it would kill the gameplay.

You can beat all of Doom with only the shotgun and all of Doom 2 with only the SSG. You can beat about most of Half Life with only its shotgun or revolver too. Duke3D you can easily kill all enemies with the only shotgun, the only exceptions being the Battlelord Sentry (could even consider it a miniboss) and the bosses.


But peeps will decide to shit only on Ion Maiden, still in preview status, for having its starter weapon easily kill the few low tier enemies that the game currently has. Not biased at all

I even agree with some of them. The monsters only rarely compliment each other, true. But there are situations where they do. Barnacles + grunts are a good combo that crops up. Tentacle faces or vortigaunts + zombies is akin to a pinky/projectile combo. So I wouldn't say they don't at all, but they aren't used that way as much as they could be. On the flip side the ai is decent enough that fighting a group of grunts and a mounted machine gun is a fun encounter on its own. It's just a different type of encounter.
And I also agree that unreal did linear design with exploration better. You weren't locked into a literal straight line and the exploration bits were more than just some hallways. Some maps were completely open, leaving only a series of doors to bypass to get through.
Overall half life may be overrated, but I think it's more accurate to say that unreal is underrated (in that last point) or that other games aped the worst aspects of half life and let most other inspirations fall by the wayside. Until recently that is.

I don't. I've played Doom since 90s, and i've used saving. After all it's default feature unlike emulator save states. I don't abuse it, but i do save some times as checkpoints on big maps and after large fights, also when i run out of time and have to stop. Id didnt consider it cheating, so why should i. I got job, hobbies, relationship, and still more than 20 wads, that i haven't completed. You can't just blaze through every corner and mow everything down like in Doom, due to every enemies' variable pain chance. A deviation from the norm and it's "the hardest retro FPS ever"?

These games can be played on toasters, so anyone's excuse for not playing through them themselves is invalid. Why make games for the player anymore? Let's just make games that are fun to stream and make monetized Youtube videos about. Who knew this phenomenon would come to these kinds of games?

He's more like an amoral douchebag, nerd, and an idiot, and the game frequently makes fun of this, but at the same time manages to be really capable, and pretty cool.
The plot is slightly disjointed (it seems to insist that Lo Wang has some kind of arc, as for why he turns against Zilla, but to me it kind of just seems to happen spontaneously), but I think the characters and the premise is pretty alright. The sword combat is REALLY fun.
He has a support character that I think is actually pretty interesting.

I mostly dislike the sequel, because it kind of takes a big shit all over the story and characters of the first game, Lo Wang is reduced to way too many dickjokes, and his new support character was intended by the devs as some kind of morality pet or conscience, which in my opinion is the most misguided idea possible for a character like this, Lo Wang, at least this iteration of him, isn't supposed to be an idealized hero, he's an asshole anti-hero at best. She's an annoying bitch and you'll learn to hate her.
The weapons kinda feel better, and the graphics are nicer, but the gameplay is in my opinion really awful, it's like a knockoff Borderlands with """"procedurally generated"""" levels (in reality the same 8ish levels recycled endlessly for the entire game).
It has that kind of thing almost like Diablo, where you keep looking for better upgrades, except there's WAY too many and they're WAY too incremental or even insignificant.

Also I feel like they skipped a game that was supposed to go between 1 and 2. Procedural level generation, as well as Zilla City were a big mistake.

Another great sin is enemy immunities at high difficulties are completely random - 4 enemies in a group may look exactly identical, but have different immunity/weakness which means you must look at the flavour texts all the time, and it sucks because they don't use icons, and use same text color for both immunity and weakness so you can't take ANYTHING at a glance and have to read all the shit in a middle of battle, and at highest difficulty they eahc has at least 4-5 lines of immunity/resistance/weakness flavour text strings. Combat becomes a right tedious unfun mess.

In Borderlands for example it is easy to tell at a glance what anyhting is resistant to because it uses a armor/flesh/shield principle and not random, so enemies in same archetype all have same weakness/resistance.

there is mouser weapon and dual mouser present in the code, and you can summon them with the console, but as soon as you deselect them you cannot get them back, and I have not seen them as pickups nor they appear when you cheat with IDKFA
Is there a way I can reintroduce them (with the pickups and the ammo) and assign a slot to them?

He does basically half of Doom and Doom 2's maps, under varying degrees of time crunch, for the first one he's completely new to the software and the game isn't even finished developing yet, so some of the design and rules is for a period still hypothetical and subject to change, meaning he's inevitably going to have to go back and make changes and tweaks even after he may consider it done.
He probably does a lot of extrapolating based on how he would draft up a dungeon for a pen & paper RPG adventure.
He doesn't have any direct programming knowledge or anything, and is just using the editor provided, as opposed to Romero who can just alter the editor as he pleases and add linedef functions if he feels they are necessary.
He has occasionally questionable judgement in detailing and decorating maps, and a few of his maps are weird gimmicks or concept maps, some are retrofitted from leftovers by a guy who was fired before he even worked there.

The result is a big pile of mostly decent to good levels, a bunch of which are totally great, with only a couple mediocre ones and a couple of total stinkers.
All this while contributing ideas for monster, sound, and weapon design.

It was pretty awful.
Like it has more varied interior decoration, containers, props, etc, which is something that was slightly lacking in the 'first' one (like how literally everywhere you went you would find the same Ikea closet to loot items from), but then instead of having proper level design, they have like two or three different premade chunks for one level type, and then those are randomly jammed together, resulting in basically replaying the same architecture and layouts all the time, all the same monster spawn spots, all the same spots for explosive barrels, all the same spots for loot chests.
There's even the same secrets and eastereggs hidden in the same places in the same chunks, and that doesn't even get into the bugs and fuckups which are also consistent in their locations in every chunk.

It's legit some of the worst level design I've ever seen in my life for an FPS, which stuns me because the 2013 game was perfectly adequate on that front.

It works with every monster mod I tested, so you can play it with vanilla Doom monsters or slap the Western Patch or anything else you want

I also re added the Mousers as a chainsaw pickup, they use the same ammo as the revolvers which Im not sure is accurate at all but my lack of expertise prevents me from doing anything about it

Wish I could figure out how to add dual lever shotguns since nothing like that is present in the code

They weren't perfect, but they didn't commit such atrocious sins as making the player replay the same fucking levels over and over, for like a 40 hour game or whatever, while pretending that each level was a different location. It's so jarring to see what was supposed to be locations specific for the main quest be just regular locales in sidequests, or be reused as supposedly different plot locations.
At least layouts and architecture changed over the 2013 game.

More, in the 2013 game, every individual monster has a distinct role and purpose, while in the sequel, they casualize the fuck out of this and a lot of the new monsters are simple reskins of each other, with vastly simplified behavior and tactics (there's no flyers anymore, and the charging bull demon doesn't require you to hit his weak spot on the back anymore, and he doesn't charge, you can just keep pelting him from any angle and direction).

Been thinking about the rest of the weapons for doomshock. Want to replace everything with something completely new, unlike the old release. How does the below look?

Tesla-grav would allow lifting and throwing monsters around. Science gun would do everything from creating black holes to teleporting you or summoning angry ghosts depending on what you set a bunch of dials for.

The original Aliens Doom TC from 1993 had a bunch of its xenomorph monsters made by digitizing and editing various toys and pieces of merchandise based on the movie.

It was released not that long after Doom itself, and the funny thing is that iD themselves had briefly considered the Aliens license when beginning development on the game that became Doom, but opted not to, for more creative freedom.

I'll use screen.Shape2D calls to allow rotation, skewing and scaling. It won't react to sector or dynamic lights then, but that won't matter since it glows. Color, glow and taper I'll do with a hard coded shader rather than spriting it.

Agreed. Other than sensible things like doing variations of wall and floor/ceiling textures, you can also combine it with shaders and frame-by-frame skin animations on static models to do things like the track textures scrolling in webm related

One feature I would really like to have though is a "mask" alpha blend mode, one that desaturates the patch and uses its color as the alpha of whatever is behind it. So you could cut transparent holes in textures, for adding windows to opaque wall textures for example.

I changed the Weapons Only mod to give you dual pistols at the start, why? because when I removed the custom cowboy zombiemen it makes it so the vanilla zombies dont drop pistols, they only drop clips

and since I changed the chainsaw spawn from the colt to the mausers that would mean there would be no way for you to get dual pistols besides cheating

this is less of an improvement and more of me covering an oversight with duct tape since I STILL have no idea what I'm doing

It is chaotic, but that's the point, ROTT is very much like Mortal Kombat in tone, but filtered through Tom's weird sense of humor.
It's almost like his Anti-Keen, technically not kid-friendly, but the violence also works on Bugs Bunny logic, which is why you have incinerated enemies burn down to their bone, and collapse with audible xylophone noises, along with bounce pads and absurd death traps.

While Doom was going for a comparatively more realistic FPS and dropped most of the vestigial arcade game features of Wolfenstein 3D, ROTT went the other way and cranked that stuff up to 11.
Given that Tom was actually fired from ID due to a misguided focus on striving for too much realism during Doom's development, I figure ROTT is him going the opposite direction on that, then suddenly getting way more free hands as ID changed their mind and didn't want a Wolf3D sequel, which is what ROTT began development as.

Well, I'm not exporting the sprites and editing them. So I can't mask by pixel like you're doing there. What I'm doing is using the "visual textures editor" in slade. It generates text files that look like this:

They specify a texture/sprite name, and contain patches (i.e other sprite/textures) and whatever adjustments you you've chosen, like scale and mirroring. I really like Quake's weird locales though, all the weird castles and temples which are seemingly only inhabited by monsters.

You ever see a bookshelf in a level? Those books are read by Shamblers, they'll just use one of their long fingers to pull one out of the shelf, and start reading.
