Does /vr/ approve save states?

It's really depends on the situation.

>> No.558163

If you've already beaten the game and are using them to master the levels, sure.

If you use them to beat the game without any skill, though, no.

I probably only finished mega man 1 thanks to save states.
I can't into defeating yellow monster.

No, i use rewind.

I use them only after a continue, because fuck passwords.

Who cares what others think? Do whatever gives you enjoyment out of the game. Just try not to brag about making it through a tough shoot'em up while forgetting to mention you were mashing the savestate button constantly.

I like to savestate at checkpoints sometimes, if the game's hard enough. But only at natural checkpoints.

Don't even tell me.
I was playing gradius III some time today and i saved while dying.
Lost muh laser, muh missiles, muh options and muh speed.

If the game doesn't have checkpoints, you're casual.

then you mash the loadstate key watching yourself die over and over again.

then realize you never once saved legit and must start from the beginning.

>> No.558283

I find rewind works so much better. Only use save states when I'm at a good stopping point.

But then again, I usually only play SMW hacks on ZSNES.

>> No.558325

I used to use them as a kid.

Now I usually just use them to save if I'm done the game for the time being.

The concept of "lives" is antiquated and has no use in a game except in rare circumstances. The auto-saving checkpoints in games the new Rayman sacrifice absolutely nothing and make the game more enjoyable in general.

>> No.558348

I sometimes use save states when I play a game that makes you restart the whole thing when you die. But I usually end up feeling like a casual and then restarting anyway.

>> No.558352

I use them as a replacement for password saves, and to skip boring segments, like long hallways and unskippable cutscenes, you have to go through every time you die.

>> No.558373

>>558326
I play games as they were meant to be played.

When I cheat, I just feel bad and end up playing everything all over again, even if the game is ridiculously unfair.

I know it's the same thing, but I just don't feel like I have truly finished it unless I do it completely legit.

The new Raymans are casual shit. Although that's because the checkpoints are often right where you died rather than because you have infinite lives.

>> No.558437

I use them at checkpoints and such situations. And just for backup. Like, if i smash my fist on the keyboard out of frustration or step on it and some weird key combination shuts down the emulator. I think one NES or SNES emu shuts down when pressing delete.

You can abuse them and be a fag about it sure, but they're useful.

Say you want to get good at that one part of the game but don't care to play 6 hours to get there, saving state right before lets you come back and practice it.

They can also help you understand some seemingly random systems.

Beats using the password systems in old games.

Jesus fucking chirst metroid 1 was a nightmare.

Oh shit, I wrote this password down 3 days ago and I can't remember if this is a capital I a 1 a lower case l or a bar

Fucking shit is this a capital O a lower case o a 0

Fucking shit is this a w? W? vv? VV? or even a uu/UU

>> No.558584

They are okay if you use them to practice a certain part of the game you have trouble with, but you have to beat the whole thing without loading before you can claim you beat the game.

That happened to me in a JRPG, where I was using savestates as if they were regular saves due to lazyness. It still hurts.

>> No.558621

I only use save states as a pause function, really, and even then only between levels.

Like in Mega Man, I used save states instead of passwords, but I only did it between levels. If I had to stop partway through Air Man's stage I'd suicide until I got a Game Over.

Using them that way shouldn't count as cheating.

You could pause the game then leave your console on, so it should be okay to savestate midlevel to avoid having to leave your computer on.

Well if you're trying to be on the "moral" side of this, it's not really in the spirit of bullet hells to not take the most obtuse, frustrating route.

I try my best not to use them. I beat Gradius I with a heap of save states, and it felt really empty. Trying to beat Gradius Gaiden now without states, my ass is being handed to me nonstop, but it feels fantastic when i make even a little progress.

I also used a save state before Jacquio in Ninja Gaiden without a shred of guilt. Fuck going back to 6-1.

LTTP bro, lost 3 dungeons and all the shit in between. I swear that the universe doesn't want me to beat this game. This is like the third time shit like that has happened to me with this, and every time I can't get into again until like a year later.

>> No.559241

>>558248

This, usually.

>> No.559276

Depending on the circumstances, yes, I do approve.

If you're save scumming to "finish" a game, that's a paddlin'.

If you're saving your place to either practice a section or simulate leaving the console on, that's fine.

>> No.559317

They're very handy when emulating Majora's Mask, because if there was one flaw that game had, it was that if it crashed or froze while you were working off of an owl statue save, you'd lose all your data.

Anyway. There's nothing wrong with using them just because you're done playing and will get back to it later. The questionable practice is of using them to more or less cheat, by reloading from 2 seconds ago every time you make a mistake.

>> No.559326

>>558621
This. I use them as an extended pause feature. Play for a couple hours and want to go eat, save state and go eat. It's the same as just leaving the console running on pause while you're away, but it frees up your PC to do other things while you eat.

Also as a back up save. I save the game normally, and make a save state just in case the in-game save didn't work for some weird reason. IMO if you use save states for anything else you're cheating, which is fine if you're okay with it but you shouldn't say you beat a game if you cheesed your way through it like that.

>> No.559531

I like them in games where they have branching stories. I can save at the "fork in the road" and re-play back from that point. I also find them handy for attempting something new, like "do I really want to pay a ton of coins or whatever to get into that bonus stage/get that sword/ect". Just don't abuse them.
