Any playstyle/challenge recommendations for the og Pokémon games? (Gen 1 and 2)

>> No.5573472

Yes, beat rounds 1 and 2 on the Sadium games.

I like to do what I call the Team Rocket playthrough.

Outside of starters I only allow myself to use Pokemon owned by Jesse and James in the cartoon and I lead with a Meowth that I never evolve.

TMs help a lot.

I did the same, but just because Meowth is best.

How did you not get your ass kicked by Psychic types and Dream Eater mons in the later part of the game?

You could get a FireRed nuzlocke hack but it will still be vastly inferior to any game that's fun out of the box. These easy games were fun for a kid in the 90s, but pretty boring now, because there's no challenge.

I usually rape them with elemental attacks by Gyrados and Growlithe. They slow me down, but not by much.

I use TMs to teach gyrados a strong water and a strong electric move. Like bubblebeam and thunderbolt.

I found it amusing how critical hits being independent of the speed stat made so many pokemon worthless in subsequent generations, namely Persian and Tauros; it's also why GSC meta was much more stall and wall focused. What I find equally amusing is how Electrode was never really good at anything, not even in gen 1 when he had the highest speed stat which translates to a 30% crit chance and when thunder/blizzard/fire blast were extremely accurate moves despite their power.

i love bug pokemon so i tried doing a bug only run in pokemon red and traded myself a pinsir from pokemon blue
holy fucking balls it was so hard and it was such a grindfest in the beginning of the game. brock was by far the hardest part and it wasnt even close. both my butterfree and beedrill were around level 22 or something by the time i was actually able to beat him. the rest of the game was pretty standard. blaine was actually much easier than i was expecting because of parasect who almost single handedly got me the volcano badge
elite 4 was a joke in comparison to brock at the time. only difficult part was bruno's onixs

>thunder/blizzard/fire blast
only blizzard was more accurate
>that shit about tauros
he isnt bad because crit changes, in fact he still has a good match up against the majority of the dex, the real problem are steel types and the nerf to his sp atk.
his counters are skarmory and forretress, both who happen to be on almost every serious team

Good idea

>> No.5575770

>>5573734
To be fair, Tauros always had awful special attack, good special attackers in gen 1 either had 100+ base special or had access to amnesia. Steel was a problem because most steel types didn't have double weakness to common attacks like rock in gen 1 and they often had good special defense. Not amazing mind you but better than 40 base special like all the other rock types.

>> No.5575832

Tauros was the hardest Pokemon to catch in R/B

>> No.5575840

>>5575832
Oh yes. Safari zone mechanics are bullshit (no pun intended).
Tauros is almost guaranteed to run at every chance, and has low catch rate and rare spawn rate.

Chansey is the other one, but they're far less likely to run in the safari zone due to their lower speed stat and you can catch them in cerulean cave.

>> No.5578398

>>5573470
Choose one Poke and play the whole game just with it.

>> No.5578591

I wouldn't call these mechanics, but it's amusing how only gen 1 games have these design choices. Pokeballs capable of missing their target, trainers looking around aimlessly upon defeat, and walking trainers who walked around and would trigger a battle upon being talked to. I wonder why they got rid of these in subsequent games? Especially the thing where trainers would just stand in place and look around, as if they're contemplating their life choices. Seems like walking trainers would make a return in gen 3, but they walk in a set pattern and not randomly like the burglars in cinnabar mansion.

>> No.5578609

Vs battle with 1-hour prep time

>> No.5578676

Try playing as a gym leader (only use a single pokemon type). Limit yourself to 3-4 pokemon too since most don't have full teams.

>> No.5578813

You could do a fun run with only Nidokings/Nidoqueens. They can learn an incredible variety of attacks covering nearly every type in the game.

fuck that. I just want to play red and blue but have all the version exclusives in one game and being able to evolve haunter, machoke, kadabra and graveler without trading

There's something called "Red Version: Emu Edition" that has what you're looking for

>> No.5580185

Is there any hack for the first gen games that fixes the miscellaneous bugs? I'm talking about things like focus energy working properly, leech seed and toxic don't stack on one another, explosion letting the user survive if they hit a substitute, fly and dig making the user vulnerable when getting confused, that sorta thing.

>> No.5580213

>>5573708
brock shouldn't be difficult in gen 1 if you had a butterfree with confusion. he doesn't even have rock type moves.

>> No.5580214

>>5578591
>Pokeballs capable of missing their target
that's just gen 1's version of "oh no the pokemon broke free" in later gens.

>> No.5580315

>>5580214
Oh, that's the one where the pokemon gets in the ball, and then immediately breaks out? I sworn gen 1 had that as well, maybe I remember wrong.

>> No.5580331

>>5580315
yep. in gen 1, if it gets in the ball it wiggles at least once.

>> No.5580352

Play Pokémon yellow, Ash Ketchum style. always lead with your Pikachu, no matter what.

>> No.5580360

The best way to play gen 1 IMO is to do a shitmon only run, I mean things like Rattata, Rhyhorn, Koffing, etc. Many Gen 1 pokemon have awful stats, but just as many have the potential for weird movesets, for example Rattata can learn bubblebeam, rhyhorn can learn fire blast, etc. Of course they won't be very effective attacks, but you gotta do what you can with a shitmon team.

>> No.5580371

Monotype runs can be fun, but Gen 1 makes that really hard since there are so few Ghost, Ice, and Dragon Pokemon.

>> No.5582152

>>5580371
Not like subsequent generations made it much easier. Gen 2 only added one more ghost type and one more dragon, but also 5 ice types. Gen 3 seemed to have introduced a lot more of them, then again gen 3 feels like they were trying really hard to make "genwun 2".
