Sonic doesn't feel good like Mario because the input granularity is much more coarse. Play with emulator rewind and you'll see how often you need to go back multiple seconds to change anything. Mario makes digital buttons seem analog. I had a Genesis but preferred to play DOS games more.

I think 5th gen (ish) is a good cutoff.
Basically, somewhere around 2000, the industry had more-or-less fully crossed the threshold into the 3D Era and the evolution of games changed. After 2000, paradigm-shifts in game design were a result of fashion and economics more than technological innovation (apart from smartphone games).

In contrast, the era from 1970-2000 was driven by rapid technical innovation, with mostly 2D design until the 90s, which was an experimental time for 3D games.

Whenever I see games I already own being offered for at least 20 dollars under their average market price online, I immediately text the seller about it and tell them to set a higher price of which I know some people are stupid enough to still pay in the next couple of days. Works most of the time, though sometimes the seller won't care because they just want to get their shit out, in which case - and if the profit is worthwhile - I buy and resell the game myself.
This obviously doesn't make that much of an impact, but it helps me to sleep better at night because I absolutely hate the retro gaming and gaming community in general with a passion.

I really don't like the 3rd gen, except for mega man 2 and 4-6, mario 3, kirby's adventure, ducktales, kid icarus, adventure of lolo and a few others i find them way too punishing and tedious. I almost only play 4th gen and up. I like trying older games and seeing how my favourite franchises started, but I just get stuck at on point and get frustrated usually. I remember dying at 8-2 in smb and swearing to never try finishing it again. Same happened with startropics, got to the second last dungeon and I said fuck it.
I don't think the games are bad though, they just don't appeal to me with their pacing.
