Anyone played this? I love 16 bit rpgs and really wanted to like this, but it might be the most painful video game I've ever played.

Painful how?

Pretty high difficulty, too much repetition in the random enemies you come across, and just not a lot of "fun."

The way the starting characters continue to interact and fight / team up throughout the game was kind of cool, if I can say one nice thing about it.

So a JRPG? Got it.

Play a rom hack that makes the game bearable

The radar encounter system should've been ripped off by more games

It's a very interesting game. The setting is weird, the world has the super "dead and empty" feel, and the gameplay kinda sucks. It doesn't help that if you don't have the instruction manual, there's no way to magically know that guarding one turn and then attacking the next makes that attack do way more damage, which is a strategy that makes the early game a lot easier. It ALSO doesn't help that they fucked up the difficulty in the western release.
Try Mystic Ark if you haven't yet, it's the "sequel" and improves on the game in a lot of ways.

>difficulty

The translators thought the game was too easy, so they gimped your stat growths. Because of this it's more or less impossible to finish, because once you get halfway through the game you're too weak to survive random encounters. Meanwhile, enemy apprentice bosses have levels that scale to yours but WITHOUT your gimped growths.

So are there Game Genie codes that level out this game?

Could never get into 7th Saga. But it's sequel Mystic Ark got an english translation and it's pretty damn good, play that instead.

>>5572029
Again, that won't help because the enemies gain exponentially more points per level than you do. If you want to make it "fair" you'll have to download the patch for the original Elnar stat growths.

I enjoyed it. The increased difficulty makes the Western release a lot more fun than the original Japanese one, though it does still have some significant flaws.

If he has laser3 you're probably fucked to the point of needing to restart since that will one-shot anyone even through buffs.

7th saga is pretty exceptional because of how well you need to run your fights. You're on the edge of losing the whole time, and if you level up too much, then the npc heros fuck you

Absolutely. It's a fucking genius system. Reminds me a lot of Zelda 2's overworld encounters.

7th Saga is a game I couldn't bring myself to play much of, but there are definitely some really cool ideas in the rough.
