No, sadly because the series has so much potential. Even Legend if Mana is brimming with potential. Wonderful writing and world building, really cool and in depth crafting system, one of the most visually stunning games ever with a soundtrack to match. But it all falls apart because the bulk ofbthe gameplay is it's combat and that's pure dogshit. Tue crafting system is cool, but using it well gives you weapons far more powerful than the game knows what to do with. Such a shame.

Action RPGs are always fun, and this one certainly has had a lot of effort put into it's visuals.

But for my highly refined tastes? I'm sad to say it falls terribly flat. The magic system (and the many boss fights relying on it) just doesn't work as gameplay component. They try to make a thing of weapon switching but it too fails. The story just isn't there (50% of it was cut even before the translators cut another 50%), and overall game structure just isn't very interesting (again, results from cuts).

I would recommend the sequel, or even the precursor though.

Played SD3 recently again. Outside of the phenomenal visuals, the game really is pretty shit, especially when compared to SoM.

This has been happening to me a lot lately: go back and play things that I used to love primarily because they were so fucking pretty, yet I just can't deny how trash the actual gameplay is. Castleevania SotN is one such culprit. TERRIBLE example of a "metroidvania", lazy level design, and 75% f the creatures die before they're done procing their oopening animations. Complete style over substance.

It's a passable game with garbage design choices, clad in beautiful audiovisuals. The graphics and music are now iconic and pretty much started the beautiful aesthetics SNES RPGs of the late era are famous for.
However there are some awful facets of this game, first thing that struck me is that despite being a beautiful game, the text boxes are very hard to read, and no background you can choose helps with that. Why they didn't go with fully filled backgrounds but instead with this quasi-transparent checkered bullshit is beyond me. Full-width text is also ugly (although nowhere near the levels Terranigma presents), but I'm going to guess that technical limitations can be blamed for that.
SnesDrunk put it best by saying it's basically a top-down beat 'em up with RPG features - and it is. Hit detection leaves much to be desired. In my experience probably around 20% of attacks I attempted resulted in the enemy receiving damage or otherwise getting stunned. This lackluster system is further dragged down by the awful, awful percentage meter which limits your damage output and doesn't even seem to work properly - though the game wants you to get into the rhythm of the action meter and plays a sound cue when it fills, it doesn't guarantee that you deal the full damage.
I'm not going to criticize the AI and that it can get blocked on obstacles, because it's trivial, and its performance in battle can thankfully be customized with the action grid menu. What I am going to criticize is atrocious magic system, the fact that you need to grind spells to level them up, the fact that you never get enough MP-recovery items, and the fact that you are basically fucked if you don't have appropriately leveled-up magic for some boss fights (which are a blemish of their own, bosses are basically unhittable with melee weapons and their hitboxes are probably the most opaque thing in the game). That part of the game pretty much kills any fun I could potentially have with it.

The thing is that monsters are invulnerable while being knocked out so hitting them while they're are down results in a wasted attack.
One thing that also pisses me off is how deceptive the percentage meter is.
Even when it shows 100% it actually isn't fully charged and you actually have to wait for the audio cue and the number vanishing to deal full damage which takes another second or half.
