Assuming you're a Windowsfag and using Quakespasm the music files must be in Quake\ID1\music.
The filenames (for ogg) must be Track02.ogg to Track11.ogg. After that is set up correctly just check your options menu.

my first quake-capable computer, the shop forgot to include the little 4 pin cable between the CD drive and the sound card, and also Quake was the first game i ever played with the soundtrack on redbook. so i managed to spend fuckin years not knowing quake HAD a soundtrack and also getting increasingly pissed off about how many games were not bothering to have soundtracks these days. i was kind of a dumb child
