iirc they were bugged at first but most of the ugly stuff is fixed by now, so it's not like he doesn't care. the thing is that this blood thing is an entirely different beast and even if he does manage to fix the tons of bugs and to remove some novelties / debatable features, it's still not as accurate as other fanports are. If it was an actual remaster with original source code and running on build engine i would just close an eye and wait for him to patch it, but this is a lost cause from the very start.

Just replayed Post-Mortem (Blood's expansion episode) on BloodEX. What a disappointing "remaster". So much is just wrong. And this isn't even autistic purist nitpicks. The tommygun is way more accurate than it's supposed to be. The voodoo doll was totally nerfed and doesn't serve its original function anymore. Remote bombs are buggy. Caleb's speed and jumping just feel off. And that's on top of graphical glitches like misaligned textures and floating blood pools. It's overall a significantly worse than either of the free fan ports. And that's really bad for a product that costs money.
The only positive change is that the Beast boss's attack is radius-based (rather than sector-based), making it significantly less bullshit. I thought at first that the ghosts and gargoyles had improved AI, but nope, they still get retardedly stuck pretty often.

What Blood mods are worth playing (aside from the bloatoid stuff [Death Wish, Inherit the Earth, and Hostile Takeover])?

It's a pack of maps from the leaked Blood alpha, with some polishing up. Pretty solid episode, and worth a play just for its historical value.
Haven't played Bloodlines. "French Meat" is a pretty cool, old-school & tough episode. "Bloody Pulp Fiction" is great, lots of cool settings & great atmosphere. "Rage Against The Machine" is pretty decent, kinda generic though. A guy named Tekedon has released some cool standalone maps like "The Slums" and "Count Of Wallachia".

I'm in a mood for something like Quake 1, but at the same time don't feel like replaying it for the umpteenth time. Any recs for something with a similar mood and setting? Basically this crazy, edgy, dark techno-fantasy with outlandish weapons and enemies straight out of Lovecraft's wettest dreams? Doesn't have to be a full-fledged game. The Shadow Warrior Classic Redux version is probably best actually. You got Shadow Warrior Classic Redux and SWP for source ports. Get that and get the SC-55 Roland music and you should be good to go. Shadow Warrior is actually very straightfoward and easy to set up.

I'm in the process of making a Doom WAD somewhat inspired by Doom 64 and Quake 2 in terms of mood. Right now it's still in its early stages (I'm building a database to build the levels off of), so there's still a lot of room for change. Do you have any suggestions as to what you'd like to see in it? I'm asking because while I definitely have a lot of ideas for it, I'm afraid it might end up being too vanilla and therefore creatively bankrupt.

In short, it's going to be a TC taking place in this underground research facility where a supersoldier experiment went wrong and they went berserk, killing everyone. You're a mercenary hired by the government to go in there and clean the whole mess up by blowing the facility up. It's going to feature mainly human enemies - soldiers of various kinds, and some mutants which are supposed to be failed experiments.

If you have any ideas as to what to do to make the whole thing better, feel free to share.

I made a mod and put it up on zdoom forums. I'd be grateful if I could hear some opinions on it from you guys.


This mod makes you overpowered but doesn't allow any mistakes. You have one bullet for each enemy on the map and there is no healing whatsover until you're through (provided your aim isn't terrible).
If you want to test your aiming skills, give this a spin.

It's still in an early stage and very rough and unpolished but it's playable even with zdoom.
I'd be grateful for any suggestions, opinions or help.

There's so many fucking monsters in this level on Hard mode, Jesus Goddamn Tittyfondling Christ. It's so dark here, and Demons keep teleporting into that central room all the time. Checking my killcount, I end up killing like 75 monsters out of 100+, just a couple of minutes into the level.
For as much as I swear at every surprise and curveball this difficulty keeps throwing at me, the combat is also so amazingly intense and fun it's well worth it.

There was one back in the 90's, made with DeHacked. Crude as hell, and not very advanced, but I think some of the levels were actually quite fun to play.

Mostly I think its the preoponderance of Vores that make the episode hard.
But in some maps E4M3 and E4M4 shamblers, fiends, and death knights are used very effectively. But remember in quake all of the monsters have a short fuse so if you can get them to hit each other just once they're going to destroy each other. Its easy to get Fiends to infight with others because their leaping attack might as well be a projectile, let someone else get in the way of that.
Death Knights also deal 9 damage per firebolt and they shoot either 5 or 6 of them (I forget) so thats pretty much an SSG blast every time they deliver a spread into something.
Infighting is also the way to get these obsurdly tough bastards cut down to size too (250 health, and he's the size of a man).

In the Episode 4 finale youre in for a treat.
No, you cant just stand there at the entrance forever and hope it goes away...

Spawn are easy to deal with.
Grenade Launcher.
They have a slow reaction time so when you hear them belch back up and shoot. Also when theyre bouncing down the hall at you - aim High with the grenades.
Their death splash does 120 damage just like the rockets do. But the GL will destroy them with one shot, while I think most of everything else besides lightning or the super nailgun takes time.
Removing sludge with the quad damage + shotgun is an excellent use of it, thats not a waste of quad.

In E4M4 be prepared to run around a fuckton to scatter enemies and slam them into each other. When in doubt, just run, run, run. There's no shame in it, you'll be flanked almost any place in the map. Also make sure you get that Red Armor, or at least save it for the end of the map so you can carry it to the next.

You folks need to build a Compiler that processes the zscript at loadtime to ease the instruction burden. If it turns out to be a lengthy loadtime process then create a cache file and run an MD5 check on the loaded files to see if their checksums match up so that it doesnt have to do it again if that caching has already been done (and well, folks can delete that cache if its not updating changes).
You're basically already doing that except instead of at loadtime, you're doing it in realtime during gameplay.
Someone told me thats what was going on and the reason the CPU bottleneck is so high even when no unusual features are being used.

Leave OpenGL as some primitive backend to the game so that it works on other operating systems. Like the equivalent of software rendering.

It's a mipmap filter, not a texture filter, you retard.

When you have a texture with pixel density higher than what that texture occupies on screen, you get several texture pixels(texels) that may occupy one pixel on screen. Rendering procedure determines which one is shown. If nothing else is done you get shimmering effect, since rendering draws different texel from that area.

If you have a texture at an angle (like on your pic), then there's even more texels per screen pixel and shimmering as well as loss of detail is amplified.

To prevent that mipmapping is used. It divides textures by 2/4/8/and so on until a minimum texture size is reached then decides which mip (downscaled texture) to show.
Bi- and trilinear filters have this functionality by default since it can be done in same pass within an algorithm, but results are meh.

The issue wit the textures at an angle remains, and it gets incredibly blurry, loses detail.

This is where anisotropy comes in. Every mip, including original texture is downscaled, but only sideways, preserving its height, and verticallt, preserving width. This is done x2-x16 times depending on setting. These textures are shown whenever a texture is at an angle, with sharper angles requiring a more "squished" texture to look good.

In fact I think I posted a gallery in these threads a while ago that illustrate all such setting in GZdoom.

In short the best option is nearest textures with linear mipmap and x16 aniso.
Linear does not include mipmapping in its process, and it is done separately which results in slightly crisper textures at a distance.

The only way to tackle the blindly without taking damage on higher difficulties is either prefiring tommygun (in order to stunlock the fuck for just enough to get back behind said corner without taking a hit) or throwing dynamite while rounding every single corner on the level. On forkstarts you don't have even 1/5 of ammo to both to allow for prefiring-based playthrough - therefore you are forced to either tank unavoidable damage, or heavily savescum and memorize the level. Tanking makes you dependent on current leveldesigner's fancy (which is more often than not is not really favorable to you), savescumming is not. Put it another way, you generally don't get enough health to consistently tank "enemy reacts in 0.01 second" type damage either on blind plays. Hence, savescum/memorization is the only viable blind forkstart strategy.

The only people that don't complain about telegraphed weapons are...well...they're all humans. They don't like them, because they're...humanoid (unless it's another humanoid). They just don't like the idea that they have a teleporting gun. They want the guy who knows how to fire it just about able to stand in on the teleporting end of it, and they wouldn't complain if he was teleporting just about anywhere, because of just how little use telegraphed weapons need to be for things like fighting, scouting, and (most importantly) finding your allies if you've been teleported into a forest or into an underground tunnel (they'll almost always find a nearby body and a few more of their own). In a few novels, the human race was given their own teleporting gun, and this was actually used by the aliens, only the humans knew of its existence.

Here's the gist.

The main difference between here and the other challenge, is that this is a fictional character. Thus, to have a chance for your character to be teleported by the aliens, you must give them at least a few clues.


A little bit about the characters. This story uses only 10 different characters:

Name: "Chronus" (not officially known)

Age: 9

Race: Human

Gender: Male

Hair: Light blonde

Eye Color: Blue

Genders: Two (3.5 million) genders, all humans.

Powers: Teleportation. (not a power, really)

Species: Manticore (manticore being the second-most common alien species when it was first discovered.)

Biology: Manticore live on earth in subterranean environments and are omnivores; they consume almost anything that comes within their reach. Manticore have an extremely short life span of up to 100 years, but live far longer because they have a lifespan similar to that of humans. For this reason, they tend to be extremely intelligent and will often seek out and mate with intelligent creatures, or at least feed off of them. Some species like the Manticore are immortal, unable to even reproduce unless they are fed to them. They are thus able to survive far beyond their own species lifespan as they do not even consider aging.

Manticore are extremely intelligent by any standard - they even can reproduce with other species which would have seemed impossible.

Doom 3 was kinda boring and even for the direction it went, it still felt like it could have been better.
I barely remember how new monsters played outside of the Wraith having teleportation.
2016 was more fun but still suffered with arena lockdowns, weird way on how it handled some of the upgrade system stuff and a weak, almost identity crysis based art direction.
I'm expecting Eternal to be essentially 2016 but better in a lot of ways.

for the doomshock guy: I went back to that screen-to-world code I made way back when and made it work with the modern pixel stretching, so it now works no matter what your pitch is
turns out the part I was missing is that pitch also gets scaled by the pixel stretch ratio, so I had to do that as well to counteract it

I imagine if you care about it, you probably figured it out by now, but just in case you do and haven't, here it is
since you're working in zscript now, you can use level.pixelstretch instead of my hardcoded 6/5 and 5/6 ratios

I probably said this before but is it possible for an enemy in a mod to "blur" the player's vision, even if the player's character and weapons aren't part of the same mod as the enemy?
I know Colorfull Hell has some "blinding" enemies but they're mostly non ranged creatures that attack themselves to you (that worm and the "beetlejuice").
I think Combined Harms did had a "blinding" Caco but it's more of a flash grenade kinda thing.

I remember reading that id wanted to do mod support as well as DLC in place of snapmap. Plus, they also mentioned Rage 2 (i know i know not retro) having mod support at some point (specifically they said it wouldn't be available on launch). Seeing id's codeveloping Rage 2 and judging by their supposed plans for it regarding mod support, I wouldn't be surprised if they wanted to use it and Doom Eternal as a means to re-embrace the mod scene.

I think the real problem with Zandronum is that there aren't as many people playing as before and the only people left only really want to play the stuff you mentioned. Sometimes I managed to get a few people to join a DBZone server and play for a little while, but it never lasted for long.

It's a shame to see what it's become, especially considering that Skulltag is what got me REALLY into Doom 10 years ago, since I discovered so many WADs through it, back when there was actual variety in the stuff being played and new WADs constantly being made for it.

It's Peer 2 Peer, so it runs like shit, and it has retardedly narrow margins for error, with little actual interface, requiring you to type shit up manually like you're installing something in a DOS prompt.


It's not user friendly and it's not efficient.
Ednerd now works at Nightdive, which might explain why people struggle to get Fresh Supply's multiplayer to work.

GZDoom's netcode has gotten a lot better lately, actually. I've managed to have a 7 player hideous destructor coop session without any major lag or netcode hiccups before, and it went surprisingly smoothly
