I always thought that the other racers weren't really racing. As soon as you past them, they de-spawn and are always on your tail. If you slow down, they're re-spawned again. They're also immune to track hazards and can't die.

However, I've been watching some vids, and something curious has happened.

1. Racers are affected by track hazards like gravel and mines. In this vid, the player is avoiding the mines, but several are exploded in subsequent laps.

2. At 10:58, he actually laps the Blue Falcon!

3. In another vid, a generic car was in 2nd place, and didn't de-spawn after being overtaken. It ended up getting 2nd in the race. I always thought that 1-4 were always the main character cars.

So are the CPU racers actually racing?

They are but their AI really just follows the racing line. Sometimes a main car can be knocked out of the top 4 if it has a serious crash and can't catch up. There are two types of drone cars, ones that appear randomly and ones that are actually racing.

Oh, neat. I thought F-Zero was somehow too simple to do "proper" racing, and just mimicked it.

Aren't there only like 10 race track segments and all the courses are made up of them?

Not same anon but thanks. I’ve been traveling a lot so I’m thinking of keeping a couple spare consoles and some flash carts in my car.
