It's a good port you just need to change some things.
It comes with crouch only on "C" so if you want on "Ctrl" go to keybinds, it's also come with crouch toggle ON so turn that OFF unless you want it.
This one is probably because of my setup, i have a ultrawide freesync monitor, when i first boot it up it keep flashing the screen, i change the renderer from Direct11 to Vulkan to make it stop, i turn off vsync choose my native resolution with my max Hz but still had tearing so turn the fps cap off and the freesync works.

Ok so here's my first discoveries/impressions:
Lighting is more acurate than nBlood/GDX.

Sound is botched by interpolation, and is muffled. Not to the same degree as Duke World Tour did it, but noticable, especially if you compare it side by side.

Radius of actors is reduced for some reason - you can get into zombie/cultists face much closer than the original (at the same FOV setting). As a side effect - jumping on things like Tombstone is a bit harder since it's radius is narrrower, and at some point I fell "into" the voxel model which didn't happen in the original/fan ports since the edge of the tombstone was rigid as well (it is immaterial in KEXBlood)
IDK how it affects hitboxes.

AI is altered significantly. Cultists try to surround you, but end up running away from you some times, overall move more and shoot less even on highest difficulty.
Zombies a bit smarter about their pathfinding.

Tried it out with an open mind. It's honestly really shitty. I'm not just saying that as a typical 4chan retard that hates shit for the sake of hating shit (I hate that faggot).

Game feel is different, no doubt about it, it doesn't have anywhere near the accuracy of GDX/NBlood and to any real fan it will be immediately apparent. Played on Well Done, the guns don't feel the same, they're less impactful and the kill physics have been toned down a lot. Enemy HP values are different, cultists for example die with fewer shots. Caleb's movement doesn't feel quite as nice, either. There is one place this port is better than the original game though, and that's in the use of explosives and area of effect weapons. BUILD engine had that sector problem that could make explosives not register how they should. That's gone in this version.

I was hoping that the crouch exploits would be fixed but they aren't, it's exactly the same which is unfortunate (although that's not a negative compared to the other versions because naturally they're all fucked, too). The sound is really muffled (tommy gun sounds so bad) and the music sometimes randomly doesn't work. Also the midi soundtrack is not using the best midi version; it's using one of the shittier ones which sucks. Overall the port feels very buggy, too, and I encountered a few visual glitches as well as other little hiccups that need to be fixed. The presentation is an absolute joke for an official "remaster", not like what happened with the Turok re-releases. It makes me laugh thinking that kids here claimed this would automatically be better than GDX/NBlood just because it's an officially released product. I wondered why Atari hadn't marketed this thing at all (first I heard that it released today was that post itt) and now I know... it's a really half-assed offering and they clearly don't give a fuck.

Stick with GDX/NBlood/DOSBox, there's no reason whatsoever to use this.

So the real world is also essentially 2D because maps exist.

Except it's not.

It does not matter how data is stored, only how it is interpreted, so both Doom and Douk (as well as any other such game) are 3D.
Because 3D means 3 dimensions. In those games all environments have 3 dimensions, and all characters navigate within 3 axis of movement. Nothing else is relevant to whether the game is 2D or 3D.
Stop inventing your own definitions.

2.5D is not really a thing (no such thing as half of a dimension), but it is widely used as simplification term when either gameplay or graphics do not present a third dimension. Like some fighting games or platformers where player's movement is limited to a single plane.

Yeah but not in Doom. In the real world things can be on topic each other, and you can move up and down.

In doom nothing can be on top of something else. You can't jump, you can't crouch. Shooting hit checks are done only horizontally, your vertical aim doesn't matter. The z axis literally plays no role in the game at all, only x and y. This is the definition of 2d!

And no, stairs don't count, they are only a graphical hack. You can't walk underneath stairs, so basically they are the same as a flat surface.

That's a limitation of the way map data is stored.

Cacodemons for example can rise up and down (as well as shoot fireballs upwards and downwards). Player can ride up and down an elevator or drop down - that changes their positions along Z axis, while lateral movement is X and Y axis.
If the game was "ackchually 2D) you would not be able to do that - like you can't in Wolfenstein.

In Wolf, Z axis only used for rendering, and does not exist for player, enemies or anything else. For some reason people that heard about "wolf being pretty much 2D" (it is 2.5 d in fact) extrapolate it onto Doom as well. The infamous video talks on length about how Doom acts same as Wolfenstein, while spoiting verifiable bullshit.

>>5562068
>Shooting hit checks are done only horizontally
Wrong. In source you can clearly see how Z axis is used in shooting checks.
Supershotgun for example has vertical spread. If Z axis was not used, it would've shot in a stretched line.
Also this is how cacodemon (or imps standing on platform) fireball goes from the sky onto you, and if you dodge it hits the ground. If there was no Z axis check, that could not have happened.

>>5562076
Both use BSP. Duke basically uses gross hacks to create portals by manipulating BSP trees. Editor just makes it easier to use, and there are some special accomodations for the fact. You can use same gross hacks to do portals in vanilla Doom, as Linguica discovered.

no theyre both 3d that uses 2d rendering tricks, the gameplay itself is still 3 dimensional because it has an x y z axis, it may not be a true z axis because its merely a height map but to the player you still need to be at the correct height to interact with a button or go through a passage, you cant fall in a chasm and walk straight up the cliff on the otherside because there are 3 dimensions. Build removed BSP limitation by not preprocessing its maps and relying on a Portal system

Another misconception about Build is that it is not a raycaster: The vertices are projected first in screen space and then a column/distance from POV are generated

This results in
1. head out from player sector
2. navigate portals connected to player sector
3. group walls in bunches and store in stack
4. evaluate sprite visibility and store in stack
5. process bunches in near to far order
6. render solid walls and portals
7. stop wall drawing
8. draw visible sprites in far to near order
9. swap buffers, restart procedure with second buffer

Each wall in the bunch is projected in screenspace and then

If it is a solid wall
Render ceiling if visible
Render floor if visible.
Render wall if visible

Technically correct but misleading. These are not true 3D movements, and in fact are very easily mapped onto 2d concepts.

>player can fall off a raised platform and not be able to get back up.
This is no different than having a 1 way door, player can pass through one way and then can't go back. Nothing 3D exclusive.

>elevators
Again, doom elevators are just doors. They take you from 1 area to another, and just because they display a 3D animation while they do that, that doesn't make them truly 3D.

>cacodemon projectiles and flying
Again, not true 3D movement. As I have proven earlier, doom's elevators and dropping from heights are equivalent to doors, so a cacodemon "flying" is just an enemy being able to go through doors the player cannot. This is 2d stuff! Same thing with the projectiles. They animate the projectiles z movement in 3D, but it doesn't matter. If you are "too high" to hit then it's just as if you were behind a closed door that blocks the blast. The z axis doesn't matter.

>shotgun spread
I haven't noticed that in the original dos version. I am not talking about source ports here, those are full 3D. But again since doom's heights are no different than doors, that range check is no different than in the case of the cacodemon projectiles, so still not 3D.

My god who the hell CARES? What exactly does this have to do with whether or not you'd want proper mouse aiming in these games? They're FIRST PERSON SHOOTERS. Whether or not they're technically 2D in implementation has no bearing on the basic gameplay and the reason you'd want a proper modern control scheme to look around, the most fundamental action of the genre.
Does anybody really want to play Doom OR any of the builld engine games with a keyboard? Why the fuck would you ever?

And furthermore, even vanilla doom supported mouse turning, you just couldn't look up and down because it wouldn't be meaningful for the way aiming is set up, and it wouldn't look right since the scene isn't being rendered in a perspective-correct way.

If we CAN render the world with proper perspective, looking up and down is convenient, as well. That's the advantage of a source port with a hardware renderer.

There's absolutely a Z-Axis in Doom, the original .exe just deliberately skips calculating it in a number of instances to save CPU power for other things, and because they figured it wouldn't be important for the levels they were making.

>lifts and platforms can move up and down, the player and monsters can be raised or lowered on these
>doors move up and down, they are a real part of the map geometry and will impede movement and attacks until they're cleared
>the player can drop down from ledges and climb stairs, so can monsters, when killed a monster may also be thrown from a ledge
>flying monsters can rise and descend, they can't be snuck under because the engine is specifically told not to let you do this, but Heretic uses the same engine and lets you pass underneath flying enemies
>monsters may launch ranged attacks in upwards or downwards angles, the player's auto aim will try to adjust the angle of attacks for height
>the arch-vile's attack will launch the player upwards upon completion (this can be exploited as a jump to reach certain places you weren't yet supposed to, or at all)
>when the player dies, the height of his actor lowers (this is also something which can be exploited for speedrunning; if the player still has inertia when he dies, he will keep sliding, and can potentially slide underneath a barrier and over an exit linedef, beating the level at the expense of their inventory)
The engine can also technically look up or down, it just isn't a coded function in the original .exe (presumably because Carmack thought it looked too crude and distorted), Heretic, Hexen, and Strife, DO allow the player to look up and down, all using the same engine.

The base game is fairly easy and plays ok on keyboard only, better with a gamepad, with enough buttons and the right binds (the Classic Complete and BFG Edition ports have very good gamepad controls for instance). If you didn't have a compatible mouse back in the day, or your PC didn't have enough memory to run both Doom and its mousedrivers at the same time, then keyboard only was an option, and for the original 3 episodes, plausible.

However, if you look at Final Doom, then you get far more advanced and difficult levels, and most people would really need the advantage of mouseturning to play it.
Looking further at usermade maps, VERY little content is made under the expectation that someone will beat them (let alone play them at all), using keyboard only. Even hardcore purists will use mouseturning, because it's the optimal vanilla experience.

True, I think Carmack paid like $10000 (in early 90s dollars) for the NeXTSTEP machine the main development was done on.

However, you didn't need a prohibitively expensive top of the line professional work station to get full enjoyment out of Doom back at launch, a decent 486 would give you good and consistent framerate and have enough memory to run your mouse drivers with the game.
Granted this would cost more than a 386, but not so much that it would be way out of reach for the average consumer.

In this case it's nothing like that, the facts speak for themselves. Fresh Supply is highly innacurate, glitchy, refuses to even run for a lot people, crashes for others, and I could go on.

No, retard, all I'm saying is I can play through the game fine without using a mouse, except for getting good grenade shots on some switches (namely the fucker on the lava pit room in Welcome to the Revolution). Marathon gives you fucktons of ammunition as long as the difficulty isn't limiting what you can carry (highest difficulty let's you carry all you can find). And you don't need to aim to use fists.
Durandal will fuck you over if you use ammo before it's actually necessary to do so, and I don't think I had a problem with ammo on Infinity, past the first time I played it. So what do you need aiming for? There's enough ammo to get by without aiming, unless you don't know how to manage it.
In the past the blue fighters in the higher platforms in the bridge room right after the crushing room in Defend this! caused me trouble but if you get on the ledge and stand near them you can actually cause infighting or just blast them out of this world up close. Or just take a minute to aim, dodge a few projectiles and kill them from afar then repeat onto the other side after clearing the melee ones on the bridge (it's not really one, it's just I dunno what else to call it).

6 player is easily doable on any wide screen though, 40 in and smaller you just need to sit closer and anything larger is easily done on a couch

really wish doom 1 and 2, duke 3d, quake 1-3, unreal tournament 99 and 2004, star wars dark night 1 and 2 and dark forces, team fortress classic and 2, turok 1 2 and 3 and rage wars, carmageddon, and any racings games had this feature

Pay money for an inferior product, to encourage them to keep putting out inferior products? Is this "keeping old games alive"? Sorry, but you need to compete better in a free market, Kaiser.

NBlood and BloodGDX are the ones to put actual effort into "keeping Blood alive", because they actually bother to strive for authentic gameplay, and they do it at no cost, just because they love the game.

The closest for the Build engine is Eduke32, of which Nblood is a branch of. The issue is that while the Build engine is much more advanced than the Doom engine, and theoretically, has far more potential, the thing is that it's far more complex, it takes deeper knowledge, dedication and most of all, time to mod on Build in comparison to modding on Doom. Not only that, Build is not as stable as Doom, making things even more difficult than they should be, as Carmack once said, it's an engine that "runs on duct tape" (granted, he was butthurt that a single teenager genius created an engine more advanced than the whole team of professionals at Id, in roughly the same timeframe) but still, there is a bit of truth on his words.

I never said Fortress Of Mystery was good, because it really isn't (and I'm kind of puzzled that Sandy is so proud of it, because he did way better levels in just that episode alone, such as E2M6). It does however have a concept to it, which is very simple and very obvious:
>you start immediately surrounded in a cramped room, by a bunch of Rocks (Barons), which is supposed to make you run for the other room
>in the other room, you run into A Hard Place (Cacos)
>the exit isn't obvious, and you need to wait for the doors to open and grab all the keys in succession, this takes time, and this is an obvious stalling tactic forcing you to deal with the threat barreling towards your ass
>the fastest and easiest way to handle the level is to make the Rocks start a fight with The Hard Place, and let them do the job for you

>>5574280
Which is fair (and I think his video on Doom 2 is actually much better than the one on Doom or Thy Flesh Consumed), but mind that E2M9 isn't just a normal map where there's a setup for an infight thrown in just for kicks, the infight IS the entire level, it's pretty much a proof of concept map.

In this case, actually manually fighting all the demons is the slower way to play the map.

>>5574309
True. To me, it's one of Doom's strong points of charm, managing to set off a big brundlefuck infight is still very satisfying to me 20 years later.

Doom was a simpler game on a technical level, and Carmack gave people the sourcecode to do whatever they wanted with in 1997 (and *boy* have people done whatever they wanted with it).
Blood meanwhile is more complex, and barring the leaked Alpha code (which would be illegal to use), nobody has really gotten a good look at the source code.

It's a matter of circumstance, as well as Carmack being very ideologically driven on points like these. Software patents don't help, either.

Imagine mods for Blood of the caliber of Hideous Destructor or Action Doom 2, or even just sprawling community map packs of various exotic themes and with all sort of interesting gimmicks.
I'm not sure it would be the same flow and output as Doom's community, but the sourcecode would make things so much easier, someone who really wanted to make an elaborate gameplay mod would have an easier time for sure.

Ken Silverman released it like 6 years ago.

I think one of the hurdles for games like these is that making maps for Build is much more complex than for Doom.
A lot of what has kept Doom alive is that mapping is really easy to get started with, because vanilla Doom levels really don't have that much complexity to them (the well rounded bestiary helps a lot too).

People were hyped for "THE Source port", a definitive version.
They ended up with recreation that is basically BloodCM but higher quality because its commercial.
Sure, Kaiser would patch shit up and make stuff closer to how it should be, but it's not an actual source port, just an empyrical recreation on a different engine.
Also if you look closer to the patchnotes it mentiones how certain things related to each other and it shows that work differently under the hood than in original - like gibs scaling off against some physical functions and ticrate instead of how it was in the original.
Even if Kaiser tweaks it, it still won't be quite the same.

People who do not care for authenticity praise it - because they do not care.
They are the same kind of people who wouldn't care for emulator accuracy even if they miss some special effects and that one part of a secret special stage is uncompletable because of emulation glitch. But hey, the game works!

People who care for authenticity rage because they were promised authentic experience and were duped.

Well, duh. Everyone thought that Nightdive somehow got the source. Turns out they didn't.

>>5576539
GDX dude reverse engineered Blood execuables, by using stolen Alpha source as a base and cross reference it with disassembled exes to see how the code was changed, and then wrote the changes on top of Alpha code.

NBlood took that method and applied it to eDuke engine instead of Java. It has some problems because eDuke slightly differs from Blood, this is rectified by some rewrites of the code, but not entirely. Visually looks better though.

Kaiser could not use Alpha code or anything derived from it, even for cross-reference, because that would make him implicit in stealing intellectual property from WB. While WB is unlikely to go for the individual modders, going after a company like Nightdive that makes commercial product is a definite possibility.
So Kaiser ends up with direct disassembly of the original executable, which is much more complicated to get exact functions from.
Also the engine all this shit works on is entirely different from Build so all the code has to be adapted, and nothing is going to work in exact same way, which is what most people have problem with.

>>5576068
>He was the lead dev of Postal 2

>> No.5576592

>>5576539
GDX and NBlood were reverse engineered through illegal means -- means that would be illegal for Night Dive to use, since apparently Warner Bros (not Atari) hold the rights to Blood's source code. Night Dive can't risk doing something like that for a commercial product as they can get sued for it. It's also just bad company etiquette in itself. Laws in Russia for this kind of shit are pretty chill or authorities just don't care, especially when the offenders are small-scale nerds doing it for free for their passion projects, so heroes like M210 and NukeYKT are safe. Maybe if Warner Bros made enough noise something could happen, but what fuck does a multibillion dollar company give for something like this? There's no real profit to be made for them to sue those two guys.

GDX/NBlood both used the leaked alpha source as a reference point to disassemble 1.0. Even if they didn't use the leaked alpha, disassembly of 1.0 is illegal in itself. This is why BloodKEK can never match the accuracy of those two ports because the gameplay was merely estimated empirically, and very badly/lazily at that. It was also clearly a rush-job, seeing as the thing is bugged out the fucking ass. In its current form it should have been an early access release at best.

Kaiser also admitted on /vr/ some time back that just using the KEK engine alone would result in inherent differences between his port and real Blood, no matter how accurate he tried to make it. He could have still done a much better job of accuracy though as we're not anywhere near the stage where the engine is the limiting factor. It's honestly a really bad "port" to say the very least.

>> No.5576598

>>5576592
>disassembly of 1.0 is illegal in itself

Disassembly of 1.21 isn't? Pretty sure Kaiser mentions that he left some 1.0 behaviors there in the patch notes that he converted to 1.21, and since he has outright told he disassembled the game to rebuild the logic, doesn't this mean he also got it out of 1.0 and made the necessary adjustments (badly)?

Also, while it is illegal to look at copyrighted source code, Nuked and M210 did it, not Kaiser. Their code does not likely resemble that one from the alpha and was mostly rewritten for clarity/efficiency or for better adapting to the new language. Is looking at open-source code illegal?
