SotN for me a while ago as well. Still want to run the saturn version because I want the rainbow cape and the areas that aren't in the PS1 version.

right now it's Azure Dreams, another Konami classic as well as CV Chronicles but that one is over so quickly. Thinking about replaying Persona 2 IS and EP too.

Earthbound for me. I had played it back in highschool, but never got past Dungeon Man (which turns out is pretty late in the game). Just beat it last week. I really liked messing around with items and their effects, mirroring enemies, and generally experimenting with the combat. Also the ending was absolute comfy, and I love endings where you just get to travel around visiting everyone and seeing how people are doing after all the drama. Also Paula a cute.

>>5559548
I beat that last year for the first time, and it made me go on a Castlevania spree for a few months. I had only played the NES and SNES games before that.

I wouldn't say SOTN was the last game but for a while it was. I pretty much annually replay this game during the month of October, I guess the last game that totally absorbed me was Parasite Eve, which I tend to like to also play annually around Christmas if I have time.

In his defense, PSII moves at a snail's pace. I like the game but it is slow. I pretty much play most RGPs with a slight constant turbo on just to increase walk speed and battle time. I get the enjoyment out of exploring the game rather than watching characters slog around environments.

FFVI fixed this with sprint shoes and Crono Trigger has a run option, so I don't use turbo in those games.

This surprised me because I never really liked jrpgs, but I liked the mappan and puzzlan, the constant high difficulty, and how it always threw something new at you just when you were getting complacent and starting to mash through fights.
Wizardry 1 was also enjoyable and quite a bit more hardcore since if you got lazy with mapping and got greedy pushing into a new area you were weren't making it back alive. Also the super famicom port art direction owned since it took the goofy source material way too seriously and ending up in a sort of uncanny wizard of oz/alice in wonderland territory.
Not sure if I should move on to other Wizardrys at this point or see what these Ultima games are all about.

PSII's battles are:
- slow
- numerous
- braindead
You can just auto-attack through 95% of the game and still win battles consistently. Only the last dungeons have enemies that need some strategy, like the huge sword (Glosword) or those shadows that use Death skills.

The problem with PSII is that the dungeons are like a maze, so they're designed to drain you of resources. Battles are pretty much braindead C mashing, but even then you don't want to fight because battles are fucking slow, there's a ton of them, AND they give you jack shit for experience. For example: the game is divided into three parts. In the first third, enemies give only as much as 40EXP, even in big groups. Once you hit the second third, suddenly they're giving you 120EXP per enemy. And those enemies aren't even that harder compared to the ones that give you 40EXP. And then comes the last third, where the enemies give you 2000EXP almost for free. And they're only marginally harder than the ones that give you 120EXP. So you want to skip the morose battles that give you jack shit just to reach the battles with more experience faster.

If I hadn't skipped the battles, I'm pretty sure my game time would be at least 60 hours. I think I finished it in 12 hours. And the game only has 3 bosses.

I need to give SotN another go. I remember seeing it in gaming mags and REALLY wanting to play it because the graphics looked amazing. I didn't have a Playstation, though, only an SNES and PC. When I finally got a PS2, I found a greatest hits copy for 15 bucks new at walmart. The game didn't really do anything for me though. The graphics and music were amazing, but I was kind of bored. I don't even remember half the levels or bosses (since they all died on the first attempt and I only played it once).

Answer is Baldur's Gate though, I still play it regularly.
