Why is this series completely dead in the West? Is it even alive in Japan?
This game was an absolute gem, all my friends who played it loved it as well. Still one of the best OSTs of the 64 era imo.

>> No.5553356

The game is steeped in obscure nip culture, which is why itvwas never as big in the west. But the games we do have have a big cult following, especially here on /vr/.

As far as what happened to the series, well you do know the current state of Konami, right ?

>> No.5553539

Konami fucked it up during the snes era by not bringing the other goemon games and also fucking up gg1 with those weird changes.
MNSG also released during OoT hype so it kinda went under the radar (even if it sold ok from what I remember).
And I guess the west was way more into MGS or Castlevania at the time.

It was released a year before Ocarina of Time, though. I don’t think it really went under the radar. As you said it sold decently. It’s just was too goofy and japanese to be mainstream.

>> No.5553746

I remember back then, the latin american Club Nintendo magazine would cover Goemon games when they released here, and I think they might have even talked about the japan-only games as well.
I remember they used Goemon alongside Mario and Mega Man in early 90s issues, I guess as a sort of mascot representing Konami.
I don't know why it didn't caught, maybe because of the "too japanese" thing, then again, by the late 90s/early 00s, the whole world was familiar with anime and stuff, so I dunno.
Goemon nowadays is but a memory, and Konami only uses it on pachinko or maybe re-releases of the old games on mobile. The original Goemon Team left Konami in 2005, and they made games for Nintendo (Wario Land Shake it, Yoshi's Wooly World, Kirby Epic Yarn)

I think they just made the decision as a company to get out of the unsafe bet that is game development, and go all-in on the surefire bet of making pachinko machines.

Nobody cares about modern Japanese games. Modern Jap devs have no talent whatsoever and are better off jacking it to lolicon porn.

It's weird how N64 fans like to idolize games of really dubious quality while Great Adventure is one of the legit best titles on the system yet nobody ever heard of it.

There's many people who remember Mystica Ninja starring Goemon though. It still went under the radar for many, but a lot of people have memories of renting it at blockbuster. Most people seem to share the same experience with it: renting, loving it, and getting stuck on the first Impact battle, or if they got past it, they still couldn't advance much because of no memory card. And they still loved the game. Many finally were able to complete the game as adults.
GGA came kinda late to the N64's library, and also remember that at the time, 2D/sidescroll platformers weren't the genre most people were interested in, people were still riding the 3D craze, nostalgia for 2D/sidrescroll wouldn't surface until much later. Still people who were lucky enough to get their hands on GGA probably know how special and good that game is. I'm pretty sure GGA had a lower production run than MNSG.

Basically he is a shitposter that should be ignored. Ideally the mods should be keen enough on retro discussion to see that he was just baiting, which is against the rules. But that would mean mods actually knew their boards and not trying to let everything go to shit.

then post at least 10 RPGs from N64 library without checking up any lists. I can do that for most platforms, not for N64.

okay but how is this related to Goemon?
The post that stated that people "only like it because it's literally the only rpg other than zelda" was clearly baiting.

what's your obsession with rpgs? I know more than 10, but most of them are japan-only, and some of them SRPGs, my favorite being SRW64. But it's still not related to Goemon.

I didn't have a manual when I played so the Kabuki robot was a huge brick wall to me since the mecha battles were so obtuse to me

It's still doable even without knowing the special moves, I managed to beat the entire game without knowing the special Impact moves. It's significantly harder though, since you rely a lot on ryo-shooting.

What kind of special moves are you talking about? I remember figuring out the pipe grapple hook thing, and would spam that a lot.

>> No.5556849

>>5556840
If you'd input a special command (like, B; one of the C buttons, etc) Impact would unleash a Hokuto no ken-style ATATATATATA attack and deal a lot of damage to the enemy. You needed to do it close to the enemy, so the grapple hook was helpful.
I remember I only used the grapple and managed to do some short combos (like the punch and kick that would launch the enemy).

after Great Adventure they kinda just made below-average games like Oedo Daikaten and 2 shit reboots (Shin Sedai and PS2 Goemon) didn't help keeping the franchise afloat, even after the great DS game.
Doesn't surprise me that Konami just focused more on Castlevania, Silent Hill or MGS during 6th gen and beyond while keeping the rest of their IPs for mobile shit or the dreaded pachislots.
