I'm trying to install a modchip on a PS1. This is my 2nd attempt since on the 1st attempt I wasn't paying attention and soldered the wrong wires in the wrong place and shorted out the PS1.

The problem I'm worried with before the 2nd attempt is if this had also possibly shorted out the mod chip as well?? I'd like to know beforehand so I don't waste my time trying to solder it again

If you ran too much voltage through the chip, you could have ruined it. I have no experience with mod chips, and I don't understand much of anything associated with it....though I did install a PSIO last week on one of my units.

I paid 30 bucks to have somebody on ebay install a modchip for me.

I remember when I was a kid modding your PS1 was the most common thing in the world. Nobody I personally knew even bought original games it was all cheap pirated copies. There was always that one repair shop guy you could pay and he'd do it for you.

this combined with all the famiclones made third world gaming a wild and fun ride.

Why not learn the disc swap trick? It's not like you actually play it more than a few times a year.

Not him but the disc swap trick is finnicky and unreliable. I've had very limited success with it despite knowing how to do it.
If we're talking PS1 on PS2, sure, swap that shit all day. But on PS1 it's fucking aggravating.

Doesn't work with all multi-disc games.

I don't know which modchip you are using but installing Multimode 3.0 is easy as fuck. Literally few wires. From what you wrote I presume you have garbage soldering iron and no skill in soldering also no idea about the electronics. So it’s up to you, you should practice soldering, if you have never done this before.

PS1 modding is like one of the easiest ways to do just that
If OP can't do this then he should just stop

Don't ever practice soldering on a working machine, practice on a dead motherboard or some random wires and scrap metal.

Unirom works with multidisc games.

Even on PSTwo it's annoying as shit. I used to do it because I wanted to be able to play PS1 NTSC games on it without a modchip on a PAL PSTwo (by way of free mcboot and some other tools). I can't remember exactly how, but I managed to make it so I didn't have to do that stupid shit and just have the motor stop for me to put a pirated disc in. The normal method fucks with regional video settings.

Honestly I'd recommend that rather than a PS1. Less of a hassle and you have to constantly adjust the potentiometer on a PS1 because that shit is more finicky despite the PSTwo being a cheap piece of trash.

I wouldn't exactly call it a life skill. But certainly a useful one. And certainly a money saving one.I mean the guy's only what, 12?, and has already spent $30 for a $0.25 chip. Imagine how much he's going to have wasted by the time he's old enough to post here? We might be looking at a future drakkon patreon.

No idea what you want.

Practice on dead electronics first, then try again.
I managed to mod mine and it works but for some reason I need to start the console and wait for about 5 minutes before putting a disc in, otherwise it will just give me the red screen.
So keep this in mind.

I figured it's because of the OneChip. (I have a PAL PSOne)

>> No.5548634

Nope. It's caps. It's always caps. The solution to every problem on /vr/ is to recap. Pet cat died? Hard as a board and stuck to the floor? Recap and relow, wash with 99.7% isopropylalcohol. There's a reason these repair threads died out.

>> No.5548673

>>5548634
Well even of you're not joking, I won't start changing caps, the laser is dying too (games freeze after a while and I have to restart the console).

So I'll just keep on using it like this untill it gives it's last breath.

If it were because of the modchip, it wouldn't work at all.

When a device starts working properly after "preheating" it for several minutes, dying caps is one of the possible reasons, smartass.

I've read online that the onechip can be troublesome because it gets out of sync with the console and it requires restarts.
