Who the fuck is the target audience for these games? You've got level themes that seem aimed at children, quotes that reference older TV or obscure celebrity shit, and then immature sex jokes. It's like they couldn't figure who would buy this so they just aimed for everyone.

Gex came in at the tail end (no pun intended) of the 90s 'TUDE era, where all a character had to be was snarky to be thought of as cool.

So many fucking idiots in this thread. The aim was the whole family. It was not unusual at the time for teenage and child siblings to play the same game and their parents to watch at times. The overall design was that the kids would play, get their kicks, and the parents could chuckle in the background at some shitty joke that went over the kids' heads.

I guess you could say that the original Gex on the 3DO was aimed at the Nick at Nite crowd of the 1990's. The original Gex had all sorts of odd and obscure RV references. The game does take place in a TV world, though. I did like Gex on the 3DO, though. I never owned the console myself, but I knew someone who did that would let me borrow it from time to time. Gex was an attempt to try and bring a mascot platformer to the 3DO. With a character that was trying to be ironically cool and self aware (Like Crash, or Eathworm Jim) but would use rendered sprites like Donkey Kong Country.

But after the initial 3DO game, I guess you could say that Gex tried to be a little more aimed at children. I think it was trying to go for that "Only adults will get the jokes and kids will like the game" Pixar mentality.

Me, apparently. I was 7 at the time, and no, I didn't get half the references. Didn't matter because he was a talking gecko exploring tv worlds.

Not once in my entire life have I ever had my parents watch me play video games, even when I played them in the living room on the only TV as a kid.

Gex is just a byproduct of the mascot era. Trying to justify him now is futile.

I could see the Netflix angle get used in a new game. That might be a good idea. Square-Enix owns the rights to Gex, because they own Crystal Dyanamics. I'd like to see them make a new Gex.
