If you didn't own both a PlayStation and a Nintendo 64 in 1999 you really were not much of a video gamer.

>> No.5530825

I owned both, along with a Dreamcast, but I mostly played PC games.

Actual gamers just had a Saturn. Cringey incels that didn't know any better had PS1s and little kids had N64s.

Saturn was a dead system, mate. But I had one of those, and a Jaguar too.

>> No.5530842

1999 is when my PS1 stopped working, but I was playing lots of N64 and Saturn anyway. I wanted a Dreamcast in 1999 but didn't got one until 2001.

I did and it didn't make me any more of a gamer than my peers who had one or the other.

I bought a Dreamcast on launch day on 9/9/99 with Soul Calibur and it is second only to the N64 + SM64 as being my favorite new system experience. I bought a PS2 on launch day with DOA Hardcore and was let down because it was little different from the DC version.
Having a Dreamcast in late 99 and 2000 was popular among enthusiast-tier video gamers. Sometimes I think /vr/ underestimates the number of high school kids and college students who owned them.

I bought a Saturn at Funcoland for $30 in December 1999. My best friend bought one at the same time. We were freshmen in high school and afaik only one other kid owned a Saturn while the majority owned either a PlayStation, N64, or both. I believe Saturns were more popular with college students and the small number of "older" gamers.

extra note:

Looking at sales figures on vgsales.fandom.com

The Dreamcast sold a little less than twice as many units in North America as the Saturn did. And again I personally believe the majority of these units went to teenage and college aged boys, so the representation in that cohort was higher than the numbers would suggest. By 2002 Dreamcast was not an especially rare system to see.

I did the same thing, but also picked up Power Stone and Sonic Adventure.

I knew way more people that had a Dreamcast in 2000 than people who owned a Saturn in 1998

>> No.5530929

I had both as well as Saturn. I also had the Pocket Station which was compatible with a whopping two (count'em: two!) games.
Saturn was my first 32-bit system, followed by PSX then, finally, N64 in 1999, just so I could own Smash Bros.

I was spending more time with PC games and having a social life

Didn't get N64 until later when brother wanted it for Perfect Dark, but played lots with my dad's second wife's son before I wasn't allowed there because they kneejerked so hard when I went vegan, and then she was having extramarital relations so they split.

Get real, nerd. With my Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Pocket, all's left is my 'mon 'tarts and a transfer pak to blow your weekend out the water.

You see, this is how I know you were not playing games seriously at the time. In 1999 "video games" generally referred to console gaming and arcades. Games for the PC were "PC games" and there was a divide between the two groups. This started to break down a lot in the early 2000s.

So when OP says "not much of a video gamer" and your mind immediately goes to PC games it's very telling.
