I would say they were equally popular in Japan but it seems that more people are nostalgic about the Nintendo 64 than the Sega Saturn. Proof that the Nintendo 64 was only really popular in North America.

I never got why they went backwards with their controller and made the Dreamcast have only 6 buttons compared to 8 for the Saturn. I mean they clearly even saw that gaming was headed towards a future with more buttons being necessary not just from observing as the PS1 and N64 whooped their ass in the US but even on their own Saturn console for fucks sake. Then they go backwards to a six button controller when their competition wasn't doing this?

Its the little things like this why you realize Sega couldn't have possibly survived much past the 90s years as a console maker nor should they have. I loved their consoles but they deserved to fail for a multitude of reasons.

Sega's controllers were always hopelessly undergunned, they kept having to update them
>genesis 3 button controller was no better than NES controller (dpad + 4 buttons), had to release 6 button pad to match SNES
>Saturn pad gained a whole 1 additional button over genesis 6 button pad, which was 1 less button than the stock PS1 controller and 1 less button and analog stick than N64 controller, had to release 3D pad to try and keep up
>Dreamcast controller was missing an analog stick and 5 buttons (2 vs GCN) vs PS2 and Xbox in exchange for a tiny monochrome screen, Sega left consoles but a replacement isn't unlikely if they had stuck around
>same thing probably would have happened with a theoretical Sega 7th gen console

>There were around 300 N64 games released in America, but only around 200 in Japan.

There was over 1000 games released for the Sega Saturn in Japan, while the US market only received about 240 games (I don't have the exact number, but close to this). Most of those Japanese exclusives were games like JRPG's, shooters, fighting games that require the 1 or 4MB RAM cartridge, arcade ports that never made it to the west. There was also a lot of shovelware released in Japan too for the Saturn, like Mahjong games, horse racing sims, hentai digital novels, and stuff like that.

>Most of those Japanese exclusives were games like JRPG's, shooters, fighting games that require the 1 or 4MB RAM cartridge,

There are three different types of cartridges for the Japanese Sega Saturn. ROM cartridges, 1MB RAM cartridge and the 4MB RAM cartridge. The ROM cartridges were used for 5 games total, four of them King of Fighters games. ROM Cartridges contained additional character sprite animation/ common data that was streamed to the system to reduce loading times. It was a weird way to handle data. Then there is the 1MB RAM cartridge, which is just additional system memory that the Saturn could use. It was used in about 40 games. It was optional in some games too, and add additional frames of animation and such. The 4MB RAM Catridge is supported by about 50 games, but a lot of them also support the 1MB RAM cartridge too. There are only 7 games that use the 4MB cartridge exclusively. Shadow over Mystara on the Capcom D&D collection, Final Fight Revenge, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, Street Fighter Zero 3, Vampire Savior: The Lord of Vampire and X-Men vs. Street Fighter. Every RAM catridge game was left behind in Japan. And there were a lot of good arcade ports that use it. Mostly fighting games, though. There were a few exceptions like Metal Slug, Shadow over Mystara, Cotton 2 and a few others.

This is a lot better. And while those ports weren't on the N64 (which did have an admittedly dumbed down RE2 at least), many were on the PSX. But that's another argument for another thread.

Is OP's post auto generated? Why the Dreamcast controller? I know it pops up in google image searches for Sega Saturn but it's so distinct in it's design it would be impossible for anyone with the vaguest interest in games to mix the two up. Then we get to the issue if bringing up the Saturn while making a statement about the 64's popularity. Yes, the Saturn sold slightly more in Japan and the 64 made the bulk of it's sales in the US, but even in Europe Nintendo pushed SEGA'S shit in that gen by an almost 6 to 1 ratio... So why the Saturn? Is this a test run for a topic pushing AI?

And the company died because of it. Just like every other company that focused on Japan did. The Japan market has been completely irrelevant since the 80s, SoA themselves we're the first to prove this and upset the nips so much by it they intentionally tanked the company trying to stick it to the dirty gaijin.

You do realise that there are countries beside Japan and America, right? The N64 was fairly popular in Australia, for instance. Why would the N64 be popular in Japan, anyway? It was a system defined by its non-Japanese games. Much like the Xbox that followed it, it marked a point where people could be console gamers and say, "I don't like Japanese games."

PC ports from the era are weird though, fucking FF7 and Metal Gear Solid had PC ports yet most people don't even know they existed and consider them PS1 exclusives. This happened a lot for PS1 and Saturn games.

Didn't want to make a new thread just to ask this question, and this seemed like the best thread to do it, does anyone know what's going on with this game? PSX and 3DO versions go for about $20 complete, but the Saturn version is going for $300+ on eBay. Is it just absurdly rare and people need it to complete their NA Saturn collections or something? It can't be the game itself because it looks and plays like dogshit.

Look up the prices of Waterworld for the Virtual Boy, it's pretty much the worst game on the system yet it fetches a pretty penny. Sometimes rarity takes precedent.
