Do you read game manuals before your first play?

Very rarely

Usually

If for some reason I have the physical manual, then yeah. If I have to look up a digital copy I do it later.

>> No.5526659

Used to but stopped as manuals went digital and I moved to emulation. Mostly I just figure shit out by trial and error.

A lot of old games expected you to. Half the retardation of retro video game e-celeb #49273426 stems from not reading the manual.

I did, I always did. I took the time to carefully read every word in the manual before I put the game into the machine. It was like a ceremony I conducted before playing a new game.

Because you haven't made it yet.

Depends on the situation, I prefer to read the manuals if available. Sometimes it's hard to find them, for example, I find FDS game manuals aren't easy to come by.

Exactly what kind of casual do you think I am?

>>5526715
Because poor bandwagoners haven't made one and also teh law?

Definitely not before first play, but I would regularly page through the manual the same way a kid pages through a comic book, they were an endless source of imagination and entertainment for me even before I could really understand them.

>>5526593
Of course, what else were you going to do while driving home from the store or while your kid brother was playing?

>> No.5526968

If I can get my hands on them.

This.

they're something to read while taking a shit

Cover to cover. But I skip over possible spoilers when I detect them.
Or if the book specifically tells me to play the tutorials first, I obey.
Besides instructions, they have lore, prologue, context, flavour, etc. to enhance mood and immersion.
Fallout 1 manual opens up with a description of what physically happens when an atomic bomb detonates. Great for setting the mood.

>> No.5527036

Yes but I just skip to the section that talks about power-ups/controls.
I don’t give a fuck about the story, just wanna know how to play the game.

Do you think children nowdays can appreciate that aspect too?

Yeah, always.

I love elaborate full color manuals. Seems it's limited to Japanese games these days.

>> No.5527459

>>5526593

No. I used to stick my nose in them. Because it was the glorious smell of a new game. I only ever took a second look when i would get stuck in the game later on. Anyway i really miss the smell of paper manuals in the morning. Fuck this industry.

I did - I shared new games with two brothers, and loved comics and illustrations, so I was happy waiting my turn while reading the manual.

I guess games were arguably harder then, so the manual often built up the mystique of the game by giving you glimpses of stages and enemies you might never see.

I really loved the hints you'd get at the end - sometimes they'd be oddly written or obscure, even a little creepy, which was really thrilling as a kid.

I loved it when games were localized and then given their own original artwork, often times with even more imagination. Seems that doesn't happen at all anymore.

Back in the time games had them I did.
