When will /vr/ get over the fact these are old?

release date != lifespan

They're old, maybe vintage, but will never be retro.

We really should include them now.

My young cousin who’s first console was a PS2 when he was a kid is now married and has 2 children. It baffles me how these aren’t /vr/ yet. Because they are certainly retro by this point.

Those marked the beginning of modern style games with horseshit like Halo, 3D GTA, COD, etc. They may be old now, but they don't belong in /vr/.

>> No.5521268

There's more to being retro than just being old. That said, GBA really should be allowed but whatever.

Post-Y2K consoles will NEVER EVER be considered retro here.

You can talk about GBA games since most of them that are worth shit are actually just SNES remakes and those are allowed

> This board is for the discussion of classic, or "retro" games. Retro gaming means consoles, computer games, arcade games (including pinball) and any other forms of video games on platforms launched in 1999 and earlier. With the release of the 8th generation of consoles, the Sega Dreamcast will now be considered "retro", though the remainder of the sixth generation (Xbox, PS2, GameCube) will not.

So pretty much when the PS5 comes out they should allow those consoles

Because this board uses a definition of the term (and a cutting line) that are arbitrary but perfectly and openly defined. The fact that you can't really read a simple sticky and still feel entitled to determine whatever rules you want indicates you're a zoomer, so why do you want to talk about "old games" anyway? Just go practice your floss dancing

Not at all. I'm a supporter of the current rules, but it would add a solid threshold for new material since things will begin to get stale in a few years. You could even stretch it to 25 years. Just a thought.

>> No.5521458

The major failure of this board was that it already passed the easiest line, which would be the transition to 3d gaming being the norm (5th gen) as that marked a massive change that can be readily understood by anyone. Another line, less well defined than that but still better than what we have now, would be cutting off the moment where online console gaming became the norm (7th) since that's been the most notable shift since 3d happened and marks something none of us want. Where it is now is fucking useless. Any issue someone could have with the 6th gen also existed in the 5th, it was comparatively a very static period of time where 5th gen trends were refined (or bastardized, take your pick).
I don't think we need to have a sliding concept of retro that moves with the times, I'd rather see a new board for the time between this board's focus and whatever is relevant on /v/, but we do need a line where we can actually explain it in a satisfying way instead of just going with it because that's the way it is.

They absolutely could have. Gunpei Yokoi's philosophy of lateral thinking with withered technology lived on with the GBA. The GBA was an ARM7TDMI and a simple line-based PPU. The ARM7TDMI was first available in 1994 and shipped with the Nokia 6110 in 1998. There was nothing new about the GBA when it came out in 2001. It definitely could have shipped in 1999 with only a slightly higher price tag.
