I'm not going to contribute because I already feel like I've posted my setup too much, but I'm gonna do that douchebag thing where I just quote every post and nitpick about how much each one sucks, because it seems like fun;

>>5518854
Too much shit cluttered together. Do people not realize what good ventilation is? I highly doubt you use ALL of this in a regular basis, you should pack away the shit that's just clearly stacked and collecting dust. Get a stand that's actually wide enough for your TV. I'll give you a few points for having a dedicated audio setup, but where are your speakers?

>>5519146
I don't think a junk table with random consoles on it constitutes a "battle station'. I like how you have a glass case full of cringeworthy memorabilia on display, but you can't even put your laundry away. I bet your house fucking stinks, and is that a goddamn milk jug on top of your set? It's photos like this that make me glad I quit weed. I'm half convinced this is bait.

I tried that once. Trust me, it doesn’t work. I’d encourage looking for a RGB-compatible Profeel or XBR before a bigger PVM, though. The market for large PVMs has gone completely insane.

>>5519912
Eh. You have to start from somewhere, I guess. I think you could make a respectable /v/ battlestation from it, but for /vr/, it’s always going to be hamstrung by a lack of a 4:3 display.

I understand but that wasn't my question. When you have a collection of hundreds of games spanning multiple console generations it becomes impossible to play them all. My question is whether the collecting or playing of retro games is the motivation behind amassing a large library. I think we all start out intending to play everything we collect but it becomes impossible when your collection grows beyond what maybe even you intended. I would like to be able to play everything I own but it is not possible with real life responsibilities and obligations.

I’d actually been meaning to get access holes cut into the side rows to double my usable space, since it’s actually an amazingly solid stand.

Just look out stands that are at least 18” deep and rated at 200 or more pounds for weight capacity. A number of 72” media stands seem to fit the bill.

I just took a bit of a break from games for a few weeks because I was getting burned out, and I was also watching Samurai Jack with my old lady every night instead, but I usually play a couple of times during the week, and almost every weekend. During the week, I'll pop in random shit to play (I played Dick Tracy and Gunstar Heroes on Genesis last night for a couple of hours), and on the weekends I'll work through a bigger game, usually an RPG. I'm in the middle of Wild Arms and Harvest Moon on PS1 right now.

Also, every few months, I usually schedule a weekend where my friend and I pick a game to marathon in shifts. Last time was Mario RPG. Next time might be Majora's Mask or Goemon, or maybe FF6, since neither of us have ever finished it.

>>5520321
>My question is whether the collecting or playing of retro games is the motivation behind amassing a large library
Obviously collecting. I mean, it's not a stretch to say that at LEAST half of the games available for any system are pretty much garbage, but just because people have a huge collection doesn't mean they don't still play their favorites. My collection is pretty tame and fits into a few boxes. I only average about 20 to 30 games for each system (except for NES, there's just a ton of simple, fun, CHEAP arcade-style games that are super easy to pop in and play for 10 or 20 minutes then go on to something else. I think I have around 70 NES games), but I have an older friend who has been collecting SNES stuff since 2000, and he owns just about 95% of the entire library. Most are games he'll never play, but he still has a couple of storage boxes with his absolute favorites that were always kept ready to go by the TV. But when you DO have such a huge collection, sometimes it's nice to be able to play random garbage on a whim, just for the lolz. I've given a lot of time to many shitty SNES games this way.

I just like CRTs to be honest. One is large aperture grill, one is large shadow mask. Widescreen trinitron is for non retro and watching netflix etc or widescreen dvd. PVM is because I fell for the meme, it's nice but sees very little play, thinking of selling it. The old magnavox is RF only and period correct for atari, colecovision, etc. I also like plastic woodgrain.

Usually when people are over netflix is on the widescreen, mario kart on one large tv, and possibly someone playing on other systems on other tvs. About monthly my niece and nephew and their families come over for game night. Not seen is a plain table in the other half of that room for board games.

Yes it is a bit too close but trust me, it's the only place I have for it.
My actual couch is in the livingroom along with my UHD tv and modern consoles.

I need a bigger place but untill then my current setup will suffice.

Yeah, that's a nice chair. It might be a little too close, but sometimes I find myself playing that close, anyway. Depending on what I'm doing, I might scoot even closer to the screen. Not him but I dont like it because people always forget about it and mistreat it. Stepping on it, running chairs over it, setting bookcases on it.

This is my experience as a cable tech and people running their own wires across a room under the carpet. The wire is often damaged.

Maybe the extra insulation of a power cord.would be enough, but I doubt it

There is a problem with DC essentially having a non-4:3 resolution that then relies on the extra space to be forgotten about by the tv/monitor. If the display can understand the extra space you end up with a strange looking image with black bars but also a constricted looking view. More apparent on 16x9 displays that can understand the 720x480 and display it and the black bars.

Rarely does this matter. However units like >>5527909 pointed out can cause issues that most people can't notice or their display does heavy cropping (sometime too much) and again... most don't notice.

Here's how I tend to do things, Anon. I've actually played all the games I own, and beaten them as well. Some of them, I may not go back and play any time soon, but when I'm looking to buy a game, I make sure I'm gonna play it as far as I can before I move on to the next. It's not something everyone can do, certainly, but I like playing this way.

I also tend to play multiple games here and there. Like, for instance right now, I'm trying to get good enough to 1cc House of the Dead 2 on Dreamcast. I have a lightgun, and I'm okay, but I could be better, can't get past level 5. In the mean time when I don't feel like playing House of the Dead, I've got a Master of Magic save I'm working through, and I'll punch up a game of Kirby here and there. Usually Kirby 64, cuz I love the mix and match on powers. My buddy comes over from time to time and we'll trade controllers between each level and fuck around in it.

Eh, I'll get as many CRT arcade monitors as I can, but regular TVs are still plentiful and I currently have 3 CRT TVs, one's a 13" color that is just wonderful, the other is a 19", I think, and while ugly, it seems to work ok, and finally the last is a big ol' 32" that doubles as a heater in a small room on a cold day.
