A Link to the Past isn't even the best LoZ game or the best 2D LoZ game. Alundra is more of an action RPG than any Zelda game aside from Zelda II anyway. It's a good game, different enough from LoZ to justify not constantly comparing them. I disagree that it out "Zeldas" LoZ. Simpler mechanics in LoZ, sure, but the execution is perfect. I much prefer the dungeons in LoZ along with the overworld-to-dungeon template for exploration. Generally better level design.

Fuck you, Link's Awakening is the best Zelda game.
The gameplay is active and simple with pinpoint reaction time, the map is enjoyable and explorative. Items are fun and useful and varied, and the bosses are satisfying and challenging. All of the sprites are exquisite, and even the story is okay, with a wide ensemble of characters to meet and get to know, with their own back stories and quirks. The game incorporated state of the art programming to allow the full use of bow-wow and had the first instance of stealing and being called a thief in a videogame, even before Ultima II. Link's Awakening may be the landmark game that insured the Gameboy's dominance in the handheld market for 2 decades, and the final nail in the Atari coffin.
