Fast forward 15 or so years, and all these people realized that people were seriously interested in the series again. They, realizing they had a good bit of money on their hands, sold it. At that time, the game sold for about $30-40. So, a new generation of fans bought it and enjoyed it. But wait! they realized that prices were still climbing. "Well, it's a great game, but I can't pass up on $20 of profits!" And so on and so forth until it got to where it is.

Now that it's on the VC, expect to see the bubble pop. Eventually, a buyer will say "Golly. I want this game, but I can buy it for the Wii U for a lot cheaper than for the SNES. I'll just a drop few bucks for the VC release." Suddenly, more and more people are following this mindset. The people hawking $120 prices are now clawing to keep even on it: "I'll sell it to you at a huge discount. $80, please!" But they can't stop it. It keeps falling and falling, until it gets back to ~$40.
