I may as well ask this here. What is the best way to play the Ultima games nowadays? I'm playing The Black Gate (with Exult) right now and loving the hell out of it, and it got me interested in playing 4-6 as well + Underworld too. For an example, is the NES port of IV good or should I stick to the DOS version? What about the V and VI fan-made remakes?

Also, why are recent RPGs so shit in comparison? Thanks.

I really recommend the Master System version of Ultima 4 since it's a faithful port and it has a few improvements
For the other games, just go with the PC releases (with a few patches for some of the games), evade console ports as they're oftenly butchered

Only good console port is Exodus (3).
Some of the non- IBM computer ports for 4 and 5 are said to be better, can't personally confirm.
Ultima 4 is essential. 6 had the most fun mechanics and gameplay.
You can get Ultima 7 to run in DOSBOX with fewer issues than EXULT has.

The angles in this game always hurt my head. Like I wanted to turn my neck. It seems isometric perspectives being the same angle in so many games has colored my perspective (literally and figuratively) on what I expect the angle to look like.
