There's also these techniques:

It's got tons of stuff where balls always behaving in what feels like "pre-recorded" ways around certain playfield objects, like rolling down upper playfield access/exit slopes in exact same manner no matter what speed or angle they enter said ramp.
Then there's the overall weird floatiness and slipperiness, as if there isn't enough friction to anything on the tables, including the flippers, which really ruins the handling. The tables being recreations of actual pinball machines doesn't help with broken illusion of realism either. A damn shame, because the game physics feels like they could actually be quite nice, if just tweaked and polished properly. As if FarSight got the physics to a certain point of completion and then just said "fuck it, close enough, now let's crank out those tables and make some goddamn money!"
Oh well, guess revamping or even tweaking the physics would mean a shit ton of adjustments and playtesting would be needed to ensure all the tables play properly.

Plus, the last time I gave the game a try they still hadn't gotten around to implementing proper keyboard nudging. Sure, analog stick nudging with gamepads is neat, but I just like the feel of keyboard better for virtual pinballing. And how does nudging work? 1 press, no matter what kind --> 1 full-force nudge. No finesse, no control, nothing. It's always full smacks or nothing. It's not like variable force nudging with a keyboard hasn't been perfected since the mid-90s or something...

The 1980 Black Knight is interesting. It was definitely great for its time. Some people still like it, depending on their taste. It's worth a play, at least. If I was going to a pinball place for the first time (and I didn't already know which games were popular), I'd just play whatever looks interesting and not worry too much about the "must-plays". With that said, you can look at how the games are ranked on Pinside. Or ask someone who works there.

The visor from Attack from Mars was reused for Spider-man (not counting Jackbot/Pinbot)
The Power-ball from Twilight Zone was reused for Avatar LE
U-turn ramp was used by Fishtales, and then again in The Hobbit.
Hyperspeed loop was first used in Nascar. Maybe it was used another time, IDK.

It's mostly a reskin, but not as egregious as family guy/shrek

It's the same layout, but there's enough differences between the two. I'd say they're about as similar to each other as Attack From Mars is similar to Medieval Madness.

Why is Stern so content with mediocracy

Being the only kid in town for the better part of a decade makes you complacent. Luckily it looks like they're starting to get whipped back into shape, especially if they keep making new pins like Iron Maiden or Black Knight 3.

Because they have very little if any competition.

Champion Pub is great. Arcade near me had one for 25 cent play but they swapped it out last month for a Game of Thrones machine. I was great at the jump rope minigame.

I probably spent over $500 bucks on a monopoly pinball table in my local drive bar but it doesn't get a lot of love from enthusiasts.

My favorite emulator pin is monster bash

I listened to a podcast interview from a while back with Tim Arnold, owner and operator of the pinball hall of fame in Las Vegas. And he seemed like he had a surprisingly sour personality. Not that sourness is a bad thing necessarily, but it made me sad that he didn't seem to be taking much pleasure from life. But he just posted on pinside that business is booming, and that made me happy for him! Yay!

Oh wait. 10 days before that he posted:

So maybe there's an element of facetiousness here that I didn't get.

Attack On Mars Special Edition is really good. Probably one of my favorite machines at the moment and for a remake they hit it on the nose

Not only that with new pin companies surfacing and starting to get a foot in they gotta improve.

What game has the best spinner sound?

I like the spinner sounds on JJP Pirates. Mostly the upper playfield spinners
