I was recently gifted a Japanese N64 and a flash cart for it. Having fun but I wanted to ask how essential the expansion pak is.

Very

>> No.5501930

Some games require it and some games have limited functionality without it. It's not absolutely essential but you might want to pick one up if you want to play every game in the library.

>> No.5501946

Perfect Dark, Donkey Kong 64 and Majora's Mask won't work without it. Probably more I'm forgetting. Also there's like 20 or something games that have enhanced graphics with it.

okay then. Thanks for the tip. Ill grab one soon.

Almost the entire 64DD library too

F-Zero expanded, Doshin, Sim-City, Animal Crossing

>> No.5502003

If you plan on playing Banjo Tooie with a flashcart you need it

Why would you play SimCity on N64?

>According to Rare programmer Chris Marlow, the company could not resolve a bug that occurred without the Expansion Pak and thus they were forced, at great expense, to bundle the game with the memory upgrade.

For a programmer, "I don't know why it works" is much worse than "I don't know why it doesn't work"

Ah that's true

Only "essential" for three games, as >>5501946
pointed out. Other than that it pretty much only improves graphics on certain other games. This is cool, I love seeing Star Wars: Rogue Squadron with upgraded graphics, but the game is still just as fun with or without the pak. (But that's disregarding the fact that Majora's Mask is one of the best games ever made.) haha

It has to do with the type of memory the system uses. This memory has to be terminated at the end, and hence the jumper pack must be present in order to function.

The upgrade pack was just more memory that could be added to the system to allow it to do more.

Effectively, no memory = no game show.

All those "enhanced graphics" modes. While prettier for their time, usually bogged the shit out of your framerates.

The only graphical extra of note that I can recall is wireframe modes in Turok.

It's not a port, it's an exclusive SimCity game.

Most likely the code was so spaghetti they just couldn't fix it.

supposedly they never bothered testing the game on any unexpanded machine until it was far too late in the development cycle. even after it was released, it still contained glitches and bugs that would crash the console.
