I'm not really sure. But I think it has something to do with how there is a two or three layer mixup regarding whether or not a couple of things were true

1. was the N64 popular
2. was the N64 regarded as a kids system

And the answer to both of these is different depending on circumstance, and depending on when and where a person was coming into gaming from.

On the overall I believe there are many people who were not really "video gamers" in the sense of knowing industry news, buying expensive accessories and peripherals, importing, or chatting about them on the internet in the late 90s and early 2000s who are given to the notion that the N64 was a kiddie system because it sort of was by the mid 2000s when they got a little older.

But to those who were teenage "video gamers" who did buy magazines, reserved OoT, were interested in the greater video gaming hobby then N64 was the machine that featured the biggest AAA games of the time from the most famous developer. Something that was a instant-buy in their minds. The whole "PlayStation has more variety of games" didn't matter to them because they owned both systems. You wanted to play Star Wars: Rogue Squadron so you got an N64. You didn't care if you only owned five or six N64 games since those games were just that good.

The short generation gap seems to be making all the difference.

Too poor to afford an N64 + the carts, most of the board is third world scum that grew up with PSX and burnt games.

>>Super Mario 64
Of course it was the game I got my system with at launch. What can be said that hasn't been said already? I spent so much time fucking around with it. Really good memories and deserved status as a classic game.
>>Shadows of the Empire
Oh man, this one came out during the Star Wars hype revival. When I was a little kid, I only remember watching Return of the Jedi on TV (I vividly remember the Yoda death scene), but it was with the re-release trilogy that I got into SW in 1995/1996, went to see all three to the threatre. So, SotE was released at a perfect time for me, also it nailed that classic SW feel.
I actually finished it for the first time not too long ago, back in the day I could never get past the jetpac level.
>>Mortal Kombat Trilogy
I bought this at release as well. I also had it on PS1 (bootleg, so it was cheaper). To be honest, I was beyond hyped when this was announced, and on-paper, it seemed like a dream come true for any MK fan, but the truth is, by then, my MK fanboy hype was already decreasing, and I didn't play it much, either version. I enjoyed KI Gold way more.
>>Mario Kart 64
Classic with friends, but I never got very into it until recently. I was a casual and didn't even knew about the mini-turbo. Some years ago I mastered it and beat all the ghosts in the Raceway tracks, felt good.
>>Star Fox 64
Fantastic. One of the best games of 5th gen. Still remember the day I got it. Never could get all medals yet. One of these days.
>>Doom 64
Rented it only once, I remember it being neat.
>>F-zero X
Got it way after its day, around 2007. Amazing, one of the fastest games ever. Couldn't beat all of the X-Cup on hardest mode.
>>Ocarina of Time
Same as with SM64, what can be said that wasn't already been said? I'm on my 2nd playthrough of it right now on 3DS

>>Goldeneye
It's good, but not one of my favorites. From Rare on N64 I prefer Jet Force Gemini and Blast Corps.
>>Super Smash Bros.
I remember this as a kind of surprise release. Saw the TV commercial (you know the one) and the same day went to the store and bought it. Was impressed at how fun it was.
>>Majora's Mask
Last N64 game I got when it was still new. Felt surreal, like a fever dream. I know it's a divisive game, but I love it.
