I've read a trivia on PSX version of Tiger Woods PGA 99 Tour Golf that initial pressing had the proto-South Park short 'The Spirit Of Christmas' hidden between the game files due to some stoner in EA QA overlooking it before sending it to the pressing plant. There's even an IGN article from back in the days still up

Do you know of any other major retail fuckups like that? games with content that shouldn't be there, mispressings, pressings with errors, games that were bugged to an unplayable state... gimme some of that shit.

That reminds me of the time I downloaded the demo for Warcraft on Mplayer. It was only supposed to be the first 3 missions or so, but you could use the cheats to skip to any level of the campaign. The cutscenes were all fucked up but I remember playing a huge chunk of the game. I did eventually buy the full game to show my support but ironically I never played it again after purchasing it. The Atari 7800 Impossible Mission was uncompletable due to a bug, hence the title really did apply.

Total Annihilation has debug mode codes in it, these were removed by the expansion packs

The IBM port of TMNT had the notorious uncrossable sewer jump; apparently the programmers were aware of this and stuck in a cheat code so you can bypass that area.

blue stinger's original printing in NA was before the dreamcast was released in NA, and as a result, there's a bunch of copies of the game that just don't work right. I thought this was a problem with the dreamcast I bought so I went and bought another one, and as I bought it I realized 'wow what if it's the game'

turns out they recalled the game and replaced it but I guess this one slipped through

so now I've got two dreamcasts I got for 20 bucks and a barely functional copy of blue stinger I guess

"The game gained controversy when it was discovered that designer Jacques Servin inserted an easter egg that generated shirtless "himbos" (male bimbos) in Speedo trunks who hugged and kissed each other and appear in great numbers on certain dates, such as Friday the 13th. Their fluorescent nipples were drawn with a special rendering mode usually reserved for fog-piercing runway landing lights, so they could easily be seen from long distances in bad weather. The egg caused hundreds of himbos to swarm and crowd around the helicopter, where they would be slashed up by the blades, and then need to be air-lifted to the hospital—which earned the player easy money. The egg was caught shortly after release and removed from future copies of the game."

So every copy of the game has a killer virus on it? Why don't you just open up the disk image on a newer machine, or on a VM, or on a non-windows system, and just extract it and go? Or am I misunderstanding? Sorry if I am, I didn't have access to computers until the mid-2000's, and I hadn't heard of the Kriz virus until I found this thread.

Also, that screensaver sounds like a real cursed image.

It's a screensaver, likely a .scr which is a .exe with some extra bindings. So you'd have to try and use a virus scanner to "heal" the file but it's hardly guaranteed.
There's a reason modern virus scanners just quarantine files.
You could install it in a VM to see what it looked like and blow it away when you're done. Maybe you could extract some images or some such, but the original .scr is best considered unrecoverable.

Say I gave you some copy of Harry Potter to read, but I had replaced all instances of Wand with Wang, it's clearly modified and perhaps hilarious. You could replace all Wang with Wand and everything is back to normal. Except at the end of the book I also changed some of the names around and now Snape is killed by Hagrid and not how it should have gone down.
Unless you are already familiar with the story you probably wouldn't realise anything was wrong, but I just put a false narrative in your head.

Early viruses were just appending their code in predictable ways and so virus scanners tried to "heal" files by ripping them out. But that was short lived, it wasn't long before they were modifying binaries in unpredictable ways to achieve the same result but in a way that you could never get them out.
A virus scanner guesses that AtelierMarie.scr probably has no business modifying KERNEL32.DLL so it says "Danger! Virus!", but it has no idea what else it might be doing that might still be malicious but doesn't trip any heuristics.

Not totally the same, but RE2 could have fit on one disc.

Basically, some dude at Capcom did the math wrong, and thought it needed to be 2 discs. They started production with that in mind, until the guy realised his mistake when it was too late.
A simple math mistake ended up costing the company money (imagine like 25 cents, but times 3 million copies printed. It adds up fast). In the end, the sales were so great that the game made all the money back anyway.
Also, they ended up keeping the 2 discs thing as a gimmick aftwr that. Even the Dreamcast version was 2 discs. Only the N64 and Gamecube releases were different. They also used the character specific disc gimmick again with Devil May Cry 2, but it didn't help them.
