This is a really good console; just not a very good fifth generation console.

>> No.5490640

So would you consider it a transitional console along the same lines as the TurboGrafx-16, Atari Jaguar and Sega Dreamcast?

Calling straight out failures just "transitions" is pretty generous. Arguably the only time the get-there-first approach didn't end in disaster was with the Genesis

it was a tepid success at best in japan

started strong and beat the megadrive, but promptly after the super famicom launch, hucard sales dropped off like a brick

the occasional well-selling JRPG on the pc engine CD add-on kept the system from dying an early death, but it always remained niche

>This is a really good console
This is true. Specs-wise, the Saturn is fantastic and blew the PS1 out of the water entirely.

Problem is, they fucked consumers and retailers by stealthily releasing it (immediately after the 32X in the US) and they fucked third-party devs by using quadrilaterals for polygons and having no development tools, to where devs had to program in fucking assembly language.

That's actually a good way to put. Really good library and interesting tech in retrospect, but not 3D centric enough for the time of 5th gen.

Are you trying to deliberately misinterpret the "it's a bad installment of its series but still a good game in its own right" thing?

>> No.5493623

You can interpret it as 4th gen if you want, the generations aren't set in stone. It would involve Sega releasing two consoles in the same gen but it's not as if Sega weren't cracked out of their minds during fourth gen anyway. Then maybe you could put dreamcast as fifth gen. However, considering the saturn can do substantial 3d even up to the likes of quake and tomb raider (if quite badly). Also it would be awkward how sega would have the best consoles of fourth and fifth gen.

The original Panzer Dragoon and NiGHTS are disqualified because they have PC ports, too.

They should have took that risk and stuck with it being a 2D only console like they originally were going to do. It should have also been a cartridge based console with backward compatibility.

Ok? That's still more than 10 games.

Not to mention Panzer Dragoon's PC port isn't all that playable these days unless you have a Windows 95 machine laying around. NiGHTS has it's fair share of porting issues too.

The X360 turned the Xbox brand from a curiosity to one of the biggest contenders on the market, even though they lost billions in the QC red ring issues, that were caused by launching the unit early so they can beat the Playstation 3.

Nights and Panzer Dragoon have PS2 ports.
Panzer Dragoon is playable on every Xbox due to being included on Orta, which is backwards compatible (and plays in 4k on the xbone, so you can actually see shit instead of it being a pixelated mess).

Being the first 5th gen console to release also worked well for the Saturn in Japan. In fact, one can even say that one of the problems with the Saturn's US release was that it did not launch soon enough, and so didn't have a lot of time to gain ground before the Playstation launched.

The only reason the Saturn launch worked out in Japan was Virtua Fighter. They sold a million units in three months. But according to Hideki Sato, it backfired on SEGA greatly, because no one bought any of their other games beyond Virtua Fighter, so they weren't making any money.

>> No.5496594

Having to sell their games was indeed a problem for Sega, at least early in the Saturn's life. Sony, on the other hand, didn't care, they were more than happy to just collect fees on third parties.

Virtua Fighter was more popular in Japan than Street Fighter or Dragon Ball back when the Saturn launched. And VF2 was the highest selling Saturn game.
