My cousin is highly illiterate due to dyslexia and minor ADD, I want to get some games for his SNES that he’ll enjoy. All he has is Super Mario All-Stars and Super Mario World. What else should I get him?

Arcade style games is what you want, and SNES can't handle arcade style games without slowing down to a crawl so you're out of luck. Get him a Genesis Mini which has (or will have) classic games such as Contra Hard Corps, Gunstar Heroes, Castlevania Bloodlines, Streets of Rage 2 and the Shinobi series.

I was thinking a Genesis/Genesis Mini might be a better choice for him but I never had a Genesis, so I wasn’t sure. I had a SNES but I mostly played RPGs. Thanks.

These are good suggestions! Metroid might be too slow for him, but I’m watching videos and I think he’d liked Mickey, Contra, Kirby, Sparkster, and maybe Castlevania!

Get him a fucking book.
God I hate the monkey families that ruin these kids with this retardation.
I'm dyslexic. I made it to med school.
It doesn't mean you can't read, it means nonsense words are difficult/impossible to deal with, it's almost like you can't even see them or they're in a different language.

Guess what, when your shitty family treats you like a retard EVERY WORD IS A NONSENSE WORD. The more you read/write and force yourself to become familliar with words you learn to chunk them into shapes that make sense.
I guess technically, I can't actually read.
And yes, drug names and shit are fucking hell to me and it takes me longer than my peers to get shit down.
Attention issues in dyslexics tend to be secondary to the difficulty of academics when you cant fucking "see" text and no one understands why. And no you don't see shit mirrored. In my case it's an issue though since I'm writing this instead of studying for my 3 clinicals this week.

Seriously congrats on med school and overcoming your dyslexia.
For what it’s worth, my family is trying to help him, and I’m not looking to just give him a chew toy like another anon said. I just want him to have some more games to play, he likes retro games and has fun playing Mario. He’s not a retard and we don’t treat him like one— we actually just found out earlier this year he was illiterate. He’s 9 and somehow hid it from everyone. We’re getting him tutoring and trying to help him learn ways to read.
Your experience about recognising the words as shapes is really interesting, that’s good context for me. Thanks!

There is no way in hell a kid kept that hidden for four years of school. It's more likely the teachers ignored it on purpose. I think this is grounds for a lawsuit as schools have obligations to all students, especially those with difficulties. Teachers like that ruin lives, get them raked over the coals.

On topic though, Just about any platformer.

I never had any learning disorders, but video games were definitely a big factor in me learning to read better and faster so I could keep up with auto-scrolling text and auto-advancing text boxes. I generally found reading in games more engaging than reading books, too. Hopefully it helps out your cousin, if he finds something that he really wants to be able to read well that will motivate him to take the tutoring seriously.

It really isn't fake. It isn't necessarily crippling, but I grew up with it. I had a fair amount of trouble learning to read, and as the stereotype goes I'd flip letters and numbers a lot. I still do from time to time now.
Hell, I even once without meaning to accidentally built a nonsymetrical lego set backwards. When I was done, I was having trouble closing the doors and I couldn't figure out why. My dad took a look and realized the entire thing was flipped. I was just "lucky" enough that it almost worked out.
It's not something that ruins you for life but it's definitely a thing.

Dyslexia can be compensated by executive functioning, but it basically requires constant effort. In my case it was mild and I would simply be incapable of differentiating the correct spelling from the wrong one in my memory, or I would say words with opposite meaning or write a different word that I was thinking instead of what I meant to write. It's like a computer program that corrupts the data every time you have to save it so you constantly go back and correct. People with dyslexia can learn to read and write, it just takes like 2-3 times as long.

The ADD is the real culprit there. I'm dyslexic and I can read because I bloody forced myself to keep up with the other kids. I've worked with a person who let his dyslexia ruin his literacy and I know he could have becomes perfectly normally literate if he didn't allow himself to fall into the 'I can't read' mindset. The extra difficulty becomes an excuse not to try, in the end.

If he's still young with a spongelike mind, slap some literacy into him at any cost, m8.

What kind of shithouse education system is this? I was in danger of getting kicked out of prep (post kindergarten, pre-grade 1 in Australia) for not being able to read (dyslexia). By grade 1 you absolutley have to have basic literacy down or you don't get schooled. And that is frankly how it should be. Forced my Mum to make sure I did know and allowed to to grow up non-retarded. Well, as non-retarded as a 4chan Austraian shitposter can be.

It’s America, and I wouldn’t be surprised if lazy teachers ignored it and didn’t want to deal with the problem. I don’t know much about his situation, just want to give him some games to have fun with while he’s dealing with all of this. I’m not surprised to hear Australia has a better education system. The American midwest lives up to their reputation once again.

Also I think you’re right, the ADD made him fall behind as much as he did. I don’t think he needs meds for it or anything, but I hope my aunt doesn’t put him on some. He’s not like a spaz, just has a lot of energy. I’ll do what I can to slap some literacy into him!

I’m really enjoying hearing your experience with dyslexia! I don’t know much about it and my cousin’s too young to explain what it’s like, he just says he has trouble seeing the words. Is it different for different people, or is your experience pretty similar to dyslexia in general?
