Comical seething aside, It's not impossible that the developers also worked on the manual, or at least chimed in. Development teams were pretty small and informal back then and they would likely be in close contact with the graphic design crew (Miyamoto did the original/euro cover himself)

The devs knew TVs couldn't actually display the games with sharp pixels but they also knew gamers understood that's what they were. It's why the calendars looked the way they did, showing a magical idealized form of the games where the pixels weren't all blury.
