I mostly just use GTR for now. Once you figure out the basic structure, it gets pretty easy to build it fast the more you practice. Then you can keep adding onto the structure to create a larger chain.

Puyo Nexus guides help a lot in general, you probably want to read about basic forms like stairs and sandwich if you haven't already.

The problem with a bunch of chains in a row is that the garbage dropped grows a ton the longer the chain gets. So the only way to stop a giant chain from your opponent is by countering with your own. Matches usually end up being a race to build the biggest chain, while setting off smaller chains to clear unwanted puyos and also to harass your opponent (hopefully messing up his big main chain).

You won't need to go higher than 9 chains in every game, but ideally you'll know how if necessary. If you can only build a 9-chain at best, and your opponent can quickly build a 12-chain or higher, you're in trouble. You might be able to win if you set off your smaller chains intelligently, but you'll be at a disadvantage.

puyo 2/Remix are the official games used in tourneys
Box is a special version of Puyo 2 with extra characters and an RPG mode.
Puyo 3 has a sun piece randomly dropping that gives extra damage
Puyo 4 has the controversial supers, the defensive ones are really broken. N64 and Dreamcast has 4 player multiplayer and some prototype modes for tiny and big puyo.
At this point the series was bought over by Sega and handed to Sonic Team, they went on to release Puyo Fever which is also controversial.

Nazo Puyo is a very overlooked puzzle rpg. It's a shame they didn't include Puyo 2 or this would have been killer.

As far as the puzzle games go, Puyo Puyo Tsuu is awesome. Huge improvement over MBM due to its rule changes (plays like Puyo in Puyo Tetris). The single-player is pretty simple but fun. You have a tower, and on each floor it's a roulette (which you can time) to select your opponent. You move up a floor once you've earned enough points beating them. So once you get good at making big chains and beating opponents fast you can move through the game quickly.

There's a translation patch too. Since you like the characters, you should enjoy that. Like Puyo Puyo/MBM, there's always a little dialogue before each fight.

Yeah I figured it out and got to level 80. It all makes sense now you can only switch colors if there's a piece of the opposing color at the end of the line. You absolutely do not want to lose your cleared line at the bottom under no circumstances.
Shame the game has no vs CPU mode, not even the Switch and Gameboy versions have it.
