I'm not trying to hijack the thread and turn it into a discussion of other turn-based strategies (or role-playing games for that matter, sorry M&M fans) but I'm curious to know why has HoMM community survived for so long, especially when compared to the crowd who played Age of Wonders, King's Bounty or Disciples. How come that there are no generals for them and the only reliable place I can discuss Disciples II or Age of Wonders is here?

Is it the multiplayer, the map generator, the overall gameplay loop or something else (or all of it combined) that made this installment of HoMM an evergreen game?

Also, what did the other TBS games do better than HoMM?

Which still doesn't change the fact it is a strategy game. You still need to manage and upgrade your parties, claim resources, research spells and explore the maps. Likewise, thanks to the more in-depth scenario editor, you can see the map changing dynamically - spawning more units, changing party allegiances, even modifying the terrain (though not at a level Age of Wonders did it) - making the scenarios much more unpredictable and varied.

I feel like you're misunderstanding what RPG stands for. There's no real role-playing to be found here, only choosing what type of perks you can give to your hero after leveling them up and choosing what unit tree to pursue, both of which are found in HoMM games. That's why we don't consider HoMM games to be RPGs. On the other hand, Might & Magic is an RPG through and through.

That was my first strategy game as a kid and I ended up begging my parents for a PC to play Homm3. I was so upset when I found out I couldn't get a massive stack of ghosts in 3 by killing my own peasants.

Are the creatures all the same as in king's bounty? I've not played the original and it would explain why some of them look like heroes creatures and others look completely different (like the demons)

Both role-playing games and 4X games can be turn-based but "Divinity: Original Sin 2" is most definitely not in the same genre "Disciples II" is. I do concede that Disciples might feel like a dungeon crawler, but that's simply because I haven't played enough games of such type to refute your statement.

For me (based on the definition), RPGs allow you to roleplay, customize your character and/or make decisions that impact the story as well as to level up your character as you see fit. Disciples only has the latter, but so does HoMM, which is why I am so puzzled by your claim it feels like an RPG. Then again, I might be using a more recent standard for classifying what game is or isn't and RPG, so I won't press this issue further.

These people are unreal, I tried to learn the rules of starting a match, including bidding for the starting town and colour.
Also, they put the game in russian and when the factions show up I don't what is what. Really inconvenient. These guys I play with are most of the time really suck major dick and are not behaving supportingly.

I used to play with people who don't give a shit. I mean it is nice and all that the whole russian and polish nation is addicted to this romantic rpg from the golden times. However this sportsmanship is getting out of hand. I like to watch the good polish players. I am a pretty solid heroes player myself even though I say so myself, singleplayer has no use and no AI stands a match even with meme solmyr but fuck this stupid hota rules and slavic hecks

Well actually when u play M map 160% it will last about 20-30 minutes playing time. XL matches can last 3 hours, not that they want to prolong it but every turn takes a long time to finish.

I play it although i didn't finish the story yet. Majority of the players are either chinese or russian, so i guess some die-hard fans picked it up. It's basically a worse League of Angels. I picked it up because i like playing gatcha games because i got much free time at my job and in those you can just click something every 10 minutes without needing to pay attention to the game at all, and in the genre, this one isn't so bad.

His educational material is basically his very detailed and sensically clear commentary during his various playthroughs with different towns, strategies, tactics, maps, challenges, limitations and explaining mechanics, AI behaviour, his decision making based on circumstances, priorities, preferences and thus pointing out how YOU should think about the game and what to take into consideration. Don't expect concentrated package of guidelines, but rather journey-like way of learning through the eyes and mind of a mentor
MeKick has both YouTube channel and Twitch under the name "TheKnownWorld". He just started streaming again after bit of a half-a-year break - stream schedule is usually every Saturday, time varies though he tends to leave a notice about when the stream stars in his media outlets

Cathedral on this screen is never going to happen indeed. We have another concept of Cathedral town but I really doubt anyone is going to work on any new towns once Factory and maybe one or two more factions will be added. Of course it's possible that factory can be the last new town but I know we can do better than that and I have my hopes high.

Snow dwarves aren't that abandoned, but their fate is not certain too. The only 100% thing as for now is Factory.

Hey HotA dude, not that anon but it's nice to see you here again! Considering that you've kept it lore-friendly so far, have you guys considered adding Vori elves?
According to the lore, three creatures lived on Vori - Snow Elves, Frost Giants and Azure dragons - so you could have a mix of these creatures along with polar bears, arctic wolves etc. Balancing the Azure dragons would likely be a nightmare but you could just create another tier 7 unit.
And as a bonus, their native terrain would be snow (obviously), you wouldn't even have to create any additional decorations (although it would be highly appreciated), just creature dwellings.

Picking a Warrior Lord makes the most sense for smaller scenarios (I'm referring to the map size), while the Guildmaster and Mage Lord are better for larger ones. Saga is a different animal altogether, as pretty much every combination of lord and hero is viable in the long run.

The original resistance wasn't a bad skill (no it was, I don't recall a single time it helped me in singleplayer) but it's existance was an issue in human vs human.

A subset of HoMM fans would go REEEE regardless of what you did. However, you must admit that revamping Resistance while leaving arguably worse skills like Eagle Eye and Learning untouched rubbed a decent chunk of HotA players the wrong way. I mean, I didn't care too much as I stick to singleplayer and map editor (also, "Island of Dust" is a cool-looking map) but even I felt a little bit miffed, mostly because I wanted to make a scenario in which you need to beat Thorgrim wearing the Pedant of Reflection and now I could no longer make his Dwarves completely immune to magic.
I'm curious: have you people considered merging the damping effect (i.e. reducing spellpower) with the old effect (% to completely resist spells)? I understand that would make the skill incredibly powerful so you could tinker with the percentages a bit. You can also look at Enlightenment in H5 when revamping Learning. As for Eagle Eye, yeah, I got nothing.

I proposed an idea some number of thread back to just turn eagle eye into the old resistance. It would likely require to lower the chance, given that you can also obtain the new resistance to combine with this, but I think it could work. Plus there's still the three EE artifacts you can use to enhance this, so that has to be taken into consideration too.
With mass spells I would guess it would allow you to prevent one, maybe two units from being affected, at most.

Will we ever get alignments that aren't neutral? Pirates are fine as neutral, but 5 neutral alignments seems really pushing it. More than that just seems like an odd choice.

Also I gotta say it's a bit sad Cathedral is getting axed, I loved the autumnal themed town. Will anything from it be used as neutral units, like the Lepers? It seems odd to have all the assets and completely scrap them when some seem like they could easily be repurposed.

The problem with the Eagle is the fact you have artifacts boosting the chance of you being able to learn a spell. If Expert Eagle Eye can automatically give you every spell the opponent has learned up to that point, it makes the artifacts useless.

Honestly, Eagle Eye might be one of the shittiest secondary skills to balance. Resistance can be further buffed by combining the new damping effect (i.e. reducing spellpower) with the old one (% to completely resist spells), Learning can be buffed by turning it into H5's Enlightenment, but fuck me if I know how to make Eagle Eye useful without turning it into a completely different skill.

Personally I made a simple txt mod for myself (for SoD) where I completely banned Eagle eye, Learning, First aid, Navigation, Luck, Diplomacy from all hero classes; banned all eagle eye artifacts (and many other artifacts like +diplo, +necro, pendants of life/death, levi boots & sea capt hat) and did many other simple txt changes (changed artifacts classes, made Resurrection water magic, DD always max 1/day, made weak lvl 4 spells like Slayer or Sorrow lvl 3 instead, cheaper devils dwelling in inferno, 1 firebird/week, swapped prices of basic vamps and magi dwellings etc).

Fortress is day 2 wyverns and special abilities.
