I have never played a Dragon Quest. Id like to fix that. Which ones are worth it or your faves? Best advice? Thanks all!

My personal favourite is V.
Either start III, V or VIII depending on your age.
V is best played on a ds in my opinion, the mobile version is similar to the ds one as well.
VIII on ps2 has better graphics but less content and way more loading times, grab the 3ds version with the patched soundtrack if you can.
No idea about III.

For the love of God. Don't play Dragon Quest III if you haven't beaten the first Dragon Quest. Players who finished DQ3 will know why.

Thanks a lot. From everything Ive seen over the years I was thinking of starting at trying 3 or 4 but def doing 5 and 8 and then the new one. Figure that will get me the big good ones first

The absolute best games I feel are III, IV, V, and VII. A lot of people love VIII but I personally don't get the hype, though it is still enjoyable.
>>5467301
While it will leave a greater impact DQII is honestly a game I wouldn't hold over someone for skipping.
>>5467327
They're mixed bags.

They have pretty bad English translations making them offputting to a lot of people. I would say DQVI on ds is the only one that is objectively better then the snes version, though VI is still one of the weakest games in the series.

Not retro but 8 is my favorite. But you really can't go wrong with any game from 3 to 6, however you should play 1 before 3 to get the most out of it.

Depends on how you feel about the accents.

I love the remakes. I prefer the new translations with the goofy scripts and puns and wordplay, they're adorable and what got me hooked on the series in the first place. My favorite in the series is V, but i also love III and IX. Debora is my wife and my love forever.

Avoid all of them from 8 on ps2 onwards as they have absolutely god awful translations. Unless you can read runes in which case play the original japanese versions.

The DS remakes are great, these antfuckers just want an excuse to ignore all of the major quality of life improvements in the remakes.

Guess what? If you knew Japanese you would realize that the original games actually have some accents too. Very little of the remakes have any accents, people like to post the egregious example at the beginning of 4.

People, (read:'muricans) bitch about the written out accents because they're functionally illiterate. The DS remake is good, it's missin party talk which sucks balls but it's a good forst entry into the series since it introduces all mechanics in the four chapters leading to to the main game.

Touché.
In my defence the only people I've heard complain about the accents are Americans, and it's really not just that. When you hear Americans read something they just don't know or understand words above two syllables. I'm not smart or learned, and I know what those words mean. Then I hear people mispronounce and struggle with simple words from the only language they speak and it's just so deeply unsettling that I just flinch.

Play either VIII, V or III if you want a good intro for it.

For III, Don't play the mobile version since that version cuts out Pachisi Track and the translation can get silly. for that, get the SFC version instead with or without translations. though, you might want to play the first 2 for the surprise at the end

for V, the DS/mobile remake has more content and doesn't look like an enhanced NES game but there is a slightly better PS2 remake which even had orchestral music and in full 3d.

VIII can go either way with the vanilla ps2 version or the 3ds remake with the cut content patched in. keep in mind the 3ds version had a fast forward button and some QoL fixes + new content even if it looks slightly worse than the ps2 version

>> No.5469231

The original Famicom DQ1 is 64k in size and split 50/50 between PRG and CHR ROM. It's also a CNROM cartridge meaning the PRG bank stays fixed while the CHR is paged. The interesting part is how the vast majority of the CHR ROM is just level data and only 12k of it is actually graphics--when you switch between a town/dungeon/overworld it disables video output, switches in the level data, reads it, and then switches in the actual CHR data.

For the US localization they switched it to an MMC1 mapper and moved the level map data into the PRG ROM (allowing more space for the larger English language dialog). The PRG is thus 64k while the CHR ROM is 16k and now entirely graphics data, containing the added sprite patterns and extra bits of background detail.

And of course the reealllllyyyyy loooooonnggggg password saves on the original were replaced with a battery save.

DQ5 DS improves the original by polishing the game, adding an extra character slot (so you could play as your whole family during the final chapter) and added an extra bride candidate in case you don't want to choose between the original weak, but magical skilled or the strong, but zero magically skilled original candidate.
