making a fast and loose judgment call to say that consumers didn't think much of the graphics at the time, it kind of just looks like a Famicom game, which was bad by 1992 in Japan but really bad by the standards of late 1993 in the US.

I mean, in '92, you could get in Japan games like Link to the Past, Axelay, or Contra 3, not to mention Dragon Quest V, which hit a month before this in Japan.

In America, you were basically hopeless releasing a game like this in late 1993. Consider that in the very same month of release that it was going up against the likes of Secret of Mana. In a position like that, Paladin's Quest never stood a chance.

PS - this is like how Hydlide on FC was a big deal in Japan in 84, but got released in the US in 1989. Nobody was gonna take a game like Hydlide seriously that late in the NES life cycle.

it didn't

The correct question is why did zoomer "gaymers" ditch superior Arcade shmups for this non-game garbage.

The original JPC version of Hydlide was from 84, the Famicom port came out in 86 and the US version in 89.

Someone also pointed out that DQ5 was just a NES game with more colors.

It has background in battles. That shit was unthinkable during the Famicom era.

Because it sucked to play. Between spells being virtually useless barring two or three in the whole roster (directly excluding Chezni's Spirit spell) AND costing HP, to grinding being a complete fucking chore, to the difficulty being random as all Hell, to the hirelings being totally static, to the game being a downright mess mechanically...

Yeah it was early in the system's life and yeah Enix hadn't quite dropped all their fat bangers by then but with so many games out by '93 surely, somebody somewhere could have playtested this tedious, monotonous mess and said, "Uh, can we not?"

It was nice to look at, had a nice soundtrack, had a relatively safe story and a unique world. It's just a shame the game was a total fucking mess. I still play through it every few years, but it never gets any less monotonous and awful. Gameplay was unrewarding and honestly brutal compared to games of its time.
But what probably really killed it out here is the translation. It was awful, it was awfully awful, like legendarily bad even by today's standards. Nothing compares to trying to sift through the equipment; nothing. I've played a lot of shit and honestly I'd probably have an easier time just reading the moonrunes and working backwards from that. Their inability to work around or with the character limit should have been a sign that they needed to start over.

That all said I still think Secret of the Stars is worse.

True, I will admit a wrong judgment call there. I admit there is some stuff in here they couldn't do on FC, but there is also some stuff that is really questionable.

>>5465415
True, but it's Dragon Quest. No way that this game would perform well against it in Japan.

>>5465414
my bad on the dates. I feel that my point still stands as far as to its reception in America.

Exactly. Americans hated that kind of stuff. Same thing happened with Earthbound, everyone thought it looked shitty and weird so they avoided it.
Also Places like Gamepro said to stick with Zelda and Secret of Mana instead, so that didn't help either.

Surprisingly it was kinda bleak.

I liked it, casting from HP and leveling up the elements separately was interesting, as well as somehow figuring it out how to get the best mercs and stuff. And I kinda liked the "bottle system". Oh, and the way to select commands in battle was kind of snappy.
Story was a bit meh, but I liked a few details here and there. Music ranged from horrible to awesome, absolute mixed bag. Graphics were horrible saving the few enemy designs that kinda work.
When I finished it the first time I didn't like the ending but over time I came to appreciate the final battle as the actual ending, in an odd way.
I never got the Gomutai tho, should try one day.
